Indi,
Reading all your and others takes on the episodes of IPKKND has been so satisfying. I'm so happy that I'm not alone no you're definitely not alone 😆 and they are so many people who share the same thoughts of mine. I know I said all this already, but today I want to put down my thoughts also and share with you.
I was always sceptical on sharing something on this forum. The reason being that during the last 2 months of the show and for a few months after the show ended, the forum got extremely divided, yes, things got nasty, i usually stuck to the place i was most comfortable in, i guess the show was powerful enough to evoke such extreme response. also social media, the very nature of it seems to aid polarisation. we at blast i think were determined to be balanced even though we never articulated that thought. also crooner, where i used to initially hang out... a thread with a lot of girls with differing views, but no acrimony. was good. and completely unreasonable blaming and mud slinging was going on. I was active with few people that time, but at a certain point of time they also got divided and I didn't find any reasonable people to share my thoughts with. I did see blast and reblast threads during the end of 2012 and 2013 but somehow couldn't come up there.Your posts have been extremely balanced and non-judgemental (but I do feel that you are a bit more lenient towards Barun though, but it's ok, I admire his work too 😉 ) teehee, you don't say. on a serious note, and now thinking about it, i suppose i had a fantasy, an ideal, about a hero character, what i wanted to see in a man, and asr often surprised me with having exactly those traits and some i hadn't even thought of. he touched me deeply. i possibly had no construct in my mind about the ideal heroine, maybe in us is a yearning for what we don't see much around us?... the indian woman (i don't mean everyone, but there is a substantial number for it to start registering) has actually struggled hard without it being even noticed and become quite a girl, khushi embodied all of that, and sanaya made her much more with her powerful rendition, her keen understanding of khushi so as not to let kkg become a caricature or a doll like character. but in asr were traits i so wish i saw more of in the indian (also other) man... my need for asr was perhaps greater than my need for khushi. and yes, barun was drop dead wonderful at portraying him. but i ask myself, did i forgive asr's excesses just because it was barun? i always felt that was not the case, and it was because the character had deepened and you could see why this man would do certain things. he was not a sweet, reasonable mild man, he was a man of extremes, so i could get the good, i could get the bad, sometimes, i couldn't forgive him, but i knew he couldn't give damn. "koi faraq nahin padta!" he'd snap nastily. 😆 my confirmation of this feeling came when i started seeing other stuff with barun, often not liking them at all, and switching off the tv. yeah, done that too... also i had seen him earlier... and noticed him, even liked him... but asr was different. some day i hope barun realises it was the role where he shone the most.unlike others who after a certain point of time started bashing the characters unreasonably without seeing the true picture behind the cameras. That's the reason that I want to share with you some of my thoughts.
I discovered IPKKND through promos on Star Plus when I was doing my +2 (high school). The first promo of the show I saw was about Khushi getting into ASR's office, and the promo ended like "Will Khushi be able to get along in Arnav's office? " [ I was actually hooked on to Jhansi Ki Rani (Zee Tv) which was dubbed in Telugu when I was studying (never completely watched it after coming across IPKKND! 😆 ) haha, all those shows so forgotten. But it's original Hindi show used to air on Zee Tv at that time at 8 PM. Because I liked that show I wanted to watch the original in Hindi, and that bought me into the land of Hindi channels, before that I only used to watch Hindi music channels but never these soap opera channels. I actually didn't know about them at all. While flipping these new found Hindi channels I found that promo! (Long story I know, so sorry to ramble so much!) ramble away 😆 ]
My first impression after that promo was "Oh! Wow! Office drama!. I never liked soap operas much. I liked sitcoms. My Grandma used to watch soap operas in Telugu, but I was never a fan of TV much other than for movies and music. But boy this promo got my attention. I was seriously intrigued by its new theme. But I didn't watch right away as I don't understand Hindi much. But a single episode caught my complete undivided attention. The episode where Khushi comes to Arnav's house to give her resignation and yells at him to go to hell. Boy that got me intrigued. Because all these soap operas no matter whatever the language was had female leads in a weak character, never standing up for themselves, never speaking their mind out. But this girl, the girl who "looks so fragile in physical appearance, who "looks weak, was standing up for herself making a good argument (that "every right also brings a responsibility and you (ASR) have failed in it, and yet you don't accept your mistake) has completely won over me. I was like atta girl! it was abrilliant episode. and yes, like asr, kkg was also revealed slowly to the viewer. from pagal, funny, cutesie, righteous sanka to absolute gussa... how she came at us. and there was that heady combination of vuklnerability and resilience... no wonder poor tycoon fell so hard. It is this episode that caught my attention and I really didn't look back and I watched it continuously from there on. So, yeah to date I really didn't watch the first 20 odd episodes hope you get to watch them with interst soon, there are abs gems there. starting from that brilliant first episode completely except for some iconic scenes (that's the reason I didn't know that Manorama sold her jewellery for Arnav's business until you mentioned in your takes!).So for me, it was Khushi who pulled me into watching the show. Arnav really didn't impress me much at that time. I was also amazed by the fact that the show was only 30 odd episodes old and there was so much story that got told in just those small number of episodes exactly. the writing was strong then and there was a sense of confidence and storytelling you rarely see. the first 30 by the way, if i'm not wrong, were directed by nissar pervez and maan singh with lalit mohan coming in after a while. one of the blasters calls the fiirst 200 episodes the golden period of ipk. because soap operas have this reputation of being dragged on for ages. Khushi was so refreshing and satisfying to watch on TV. There were many attempts in re-creating Khushi like characters after this show in Indian Television but none got what was in Khushi and none could repeat what Sanaya did with Khushi.
