Nice thread and interesting perspective. Many a times I dont like comments, but its simply because the like button is a pain when one accesses the forum via a phone. Rest assured I read every comment and od make an effort to PM those readers whose comment caught my attention or to clarify any questions.

As a writer (an irregular one at that), there was a time when I used to feel disappointed by the lack of comments. But slowly that stopped bothering me. I write for my own personal gratification. And if people appreciate it or criticize my work, its only an added bonus.

While I understand why many writers feel motivated by comments, I dont support behavior where the writer demands comments from a reader. Which is why I stopped sending PM notifications. If my story moves a reader they will say something. I don't want my readers to feel obliged to comment and PM notifications does exactly that.

Nice post Shruti. You have neatly summarised what a lot of us feel. Not all of us are comfortable commenting on the stories we read. Sometimes the stories overwhelm us so much that we are lost trying to find words to appreciate them.
Then there are some like me who are not very comfortable with typing out long replies simply because we are technologically challenged. To type out even this much it takes a lot of effort.
I would like to use this thread to appeal to all the writers out there to understand that there are many out here who like your stories but won't or can't comment for their own reasons. I understand that you put in a a lot of efforts to put across your stories, but the very reason you put them up on this public forum is because you want people to read them. If you put across so many conditions, or if you want only aa select few to read your stories, then don't post snippets here, move to a private blog as some of them have already done..

I cannot thank you and Nexus enough for voicing the reader's perspectives.

I always make it a point to make a proper comment on every update, there are some writers who cannot even acknowledge it by pressing the like button!

Thank you so much for this much needed post.f

The worst was this writer who put up a post asking people to let her know how many people were interested in reading her story which she hadn't updated for a while after having written more than 20 chapters.

She had a few hundred replies, so any affirming that they were reading her story

And now after one update, she's too busy with her work to write now, so she will continue in some uncertain future.

I cannot describe how insulted i have felt since for having replied to her first post.

I understand writers' need for feedback, and am happy to make the effort to put in a genuine comment, but i fully understand why some readers choose to remain silent.

This post got my eye.. Because dude i've been through this phase!

I still remember i joined IF in nov last year and i didn't even know what to do..? I mean what?? My inbox was empty, i knew Nothing!

Till December.. I stayed almost invisible.. Then in search bar, i wrote the name of an FF i read On FB and bang.. It was there..

To understand how to like was easy because the button was in front, after a few days i got to know how to add frnds too.. But the problem remained.. How do i comment??.. I didn't know it!

By then i had started to receive pm's. And i started to observe that people talk here, talk about stuff which is not related to the FF's only.

Then i pm-ed! A voila, help came.. I pm-ed to the writers about how i felt o the chapter and story and they responded.. Then i asked one of them to tell me how to Comment! And after some 1.5 months i made my first comment..

The thing is, their might be set of rules about how to start on IF , but you can't reach those rules, till you know how to use IF, which in my case i didn't!

Secondly, if a reader writes something like : Fabulous, great, awesme, waiting for next.. Etc etc..
How can you expect a writer to respond to this!

I dunno if it was mere luck or something, but whenevr i've written a good comment, the writer has approached me somehow! I guess that should be!

- you sent pm, you never reply few people's on thread leaving the rest.. when i writer don't reply to any comment thn that's acceptable atleast then you are not being biased so a reader can understand that it's fine you are busy.. but some people reply to their friend's comment on thread.. what are we?? fools that we are wasting time to comment..

- i am not trying to justify silent reader.. well i can't but i have seen few people turning a silent one.. they were forced to by the behavior of writer.. so a writer should check out there words also..!!

-that's the reason i don't sent request writers now.. comment when you feel like..😛

thank you for commenting..!!😊

exactly that's what i was feeling yesterday that how the hell i commented on such stories at first place.. for the first time i was regretting why i wasted so much of time in writing a comment..
