Zehra!

Just wanted to tell you, I had a fun time reading your post! 😊

I am guilty of point number one though I have my own excuses. 😳 Sometimes I am really not sure what I want to say .. so I choose to comment for the whole story or a few chapters together, instead of chapter by chapter comment. And since I read mostly form phone, posting comment becomes a tough job.

Most of the times it is point number 2 for me.

Points 3 -7 made me laugh ... 😆 But about point 4 .. I won't term it as enmity but I have stopped reading stories because of growing dislike about the author. It is not like I read silently and don't comment .. I just stop reading. The only thing that has made me leave a story midway, even if it is good, is the arrogance of a writer. As a person, this is one trait I prefer to avoid by all means.

Point 9 .. does not apply to me.

Point 10 .. I understand a reader's POV here. But also for the writers it is sometimes difficult to reply to all the comments. What to say ... I myself want my comments to be replied when I leave a lot of comments un-replied.

I was very shy initially before I became vocal on the forum. Even then, I had PMed my favourite authors as I was too apprehensive to post my reviews on the main forum. Later, I don't know how but I started commenting and now you can see where I am :P

I am not a silent reader. If I like something I will tell the author about it (unless it slipped my mind because of some external factors. I will never intentionally not comment). Yes, if I don't like something and its a new or upcoming author, I don't say it because they might feel bad. So I quietly leave :) And this is because I don't know how the author will take it :)

Many readers tell me that they are too shy to post on the public forum and hence PMs me their reviews and I am fine with it. They are not silent any more ;)

1) Some say they are not good with words. I understand that too because once upon a time my siblings used to have a gala time poking fun at my grammatical and spelling errors! But what I don't understand is why so many authors silently read stories (I mean only by liking each and every chapter but never uttering a word about the story) They are pretty good with words, hence they should try to say something about the story and especially so because that author becomes happy that an established author from the forum read him/her.

2) Time. Time is the main culprit. I don't get time at all these days to even read anything, commenting is a different business altogether. These days I read only when something is highly recommended. But I always feel that if you are vocal otherwise, then you should try to drop in at least one emoticon. How much time does it take to type this -> :) ?

3) Ego. I have seen and experienced this. Some people are too egoistic to comment. I don't know what their thought process is. But this happens. Some are so egoistic that even if they like something they will not even 'Like' it. Their 'Like's are very precious

4) Enmity. Yes. If a reader stops liking an author, then he or she will turn silent (But yes, they do read) So my previous point on ego does feature here as well.

5) Give and take. I read you. You read me. I comment. You comment. This I have seen almost everywhere on the FF forum...

6) Scared. Some authors are not approachable and hence readers get afraid to comment. What if the author and her whole brigade would come forward to attack you?

7) Competition. Notice this, most popular authors don't read each other on the forum

8) Falling sick. It is a part of our real life. We fall sick and we just like to lie down and read and have no energy to type. And often the sick 'leaves' are so long that the readers are never able to tell what they wanted to about the story

9) PMs. If an author doesn't PM, the reader will not comment.

10) Prejudice/Experience. If the author doesn't acknowledge the comments, the reader turns silent

P.S. Sorry for such a long essay and point wise reply. I have studied under the Maharashtra Board and Mumbai University so...

P.P.S These points may not apply fully to all and one. Its just my observation :)

When I first came across the wonderful world of IF, it was mainly because of my love for IPKKND. I did not read ff at that time. However after discovering that FF is also interesting I started reading it.
I used to be a silent reader at first because it was all new to me and I was not sure if it mattered to the writer if I commented or not. Then with time I realized that EVERY LIKE AND COMMENT, is like a pat on the back for the writer.
So even if I cant find the time to write long essays for comments, I do try to award the writer with a sincere two word comment.

I dont know about others but for me it was hard to know what to say and how to say. Then I didn't want sound rude or anything. I thought it didn't matter if say something or not. And the whole FF thing was new for me.

But it was wrong to be a salient reader so I apologize to all my writer again 😃

I, too, am guilty of being a silent reader at first. As I got familiar with IF and started reading some amazing authors , especially in IPKKND , I felt few words of appreciation were needed. 😊

i was really unsure about all this...even i was confused what to write in a comment in the starting

Brillant question yaar

for me commenting solely depends upon the story
if the story is very capitivating the story itself urge us to comment
and when i was a new bie i was totally scared to comment .i started responsing only after getting comfortable her.

But I also think if you dont want the author to send you pms or you dont want to always comment then unbuddy that author and then read when you can. in that way the author will not feel bad or just tell the author in a way they will understand:)

thanks for sharing your views:)
