Content takes over TV prime time
Not onscreen chemistry of lead couple, but impactful tracks did wonders for Balika Vadhu.
Onscreen chemistry between a lead couple on a TV show is a must. Agree? However, the telly equations are surely tilting towards newer definitions, with content taking over the prime time.

So, now you see a powerfully woven story taking over the chemistry factor. We have had seen it all in the past, how the chemistry between a lead couple helped a show win audience's hearts. Mihir and Tulsi in Kyunkii...Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi or Maan and Geet in Geet...Hui Sabse Parayi or Arnav and Khushi from Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?

Now, that thing has become a passe. Picture this, Sooraj (Anas Rashid) and Sandhya (Deepika Singh) in Diya Aur Baati Hum, Zoya (Surbhi Jyoti) and Asad (Karan Singh Grover) in Qubool Hai, RK (Vivian D'Sena) and Madhubala ( Drashti Dhami) in Madhubala...Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Anandi ( Toral Rasputra) and Shiv ( Siddharth Shukla) inBalika Vadhu or Raj (Karan V Grover) Sarita (Srishty Rode) in Punar Vivah - Ek Nayi Umeed " although all these pairs are highly popular within audiences but, the show popularity is backed by a well written and very well crafted execution.
Of late, it is the dramatic twists in the tales that is working for these shows and is garnering them more TVTs. Producer Sudhir Sharma says, "It is content that makes or breaks a show. Indeed good cast and lead couple's chemistry are key factors for any show to garner audiences, like how the onscreen chemistry between Sanaya Irani and Barun Sobti impacted Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? At the same time, new faces get a better mileage owing to a great storyline and powerful content. Despite a strong lead cast, some shows failed to grab eyeballs in recent times too due to weak content."

Many in the industry feel, it's ultimately good content that sparks off the onscreen chemistry between the lead couple. Producer Asit Kumarr Modi shares, "If content fails, the chemistry of lead couple is going to take a show nowhere. So, any day producers and directors will focus on a better story-line. Despite the lead couple's sizzling onscreen chemistry in some shows, ratings experienced a dip because of weaker tracks. The same applies to my show also."

Agrees actress Adaa Khan, who says, "Content of a show is most important for its popularity than it was before. Actors' chemistry is an add on and it's the camera's perspective and the director's vision that makes a lead couple strike a chord and look good on screen."
Actor Jay Soni says, "Like in films where just one scene or one good song doesn't make a film a big hit, a TV show can't click with just the help of a good screen chemistry. The storyline has to be up to the mark. How a story flows and the character sketch has to have a balance and be in sync."

With lead replacements becoming too frequent these days, the focus has shifted more towards how a story is shaping up, leading to a diverse set of stories and genres being explored by the TV fraternity.

totally agree! content definitely was king in the beginning, the story and characters were so well crafted and the chemistry of barun and sanaya just added to it and took it to a whole another level.

This article is absolute rubbish! People were taken over by ArHi much later. It was the story that kept IPKKND going initially. Only during the Nainital track is when people might have realized completely how heavenly ArHi were. I don't agree with this article one bit! And I think its a slap on the faces of fans of IPKKND to insinuate that the show was only popular becauseof the chemistry of SaRun. I don't see people appreciating Sheetal and Mrs. India tracks! Absolute crap! And thw power of SaRun came in when we actually sat through utter nonsense just to see ArHi. By then the chemistry was established. In the end the show was on air only cause of SaRun. But initially it was all storyline and content.

Completely agree...ipknnd gained impetus wid its story line and chemistry...
Then a point came...when people used to watch only for leads...even in crappiest tracks..
So i agree wid Mr .sudhir that it was the only show...wich was watched coz of leads and other members too...however crappy the track was

THAT IS WHERE OUR SHOW AND ITS FANS R DIFFERENT TO OTHERS.

THE STORY AND CONTENT AND WHY R WE FORGETTING THE QUALITY OF INPUT BY THE PH WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT IN THE BEGINNING IF THE PROMOS WERE ANYTHING TO GO BY (PPL WERE HOOKED BEFORE THE SHOW HAD EVEN STARTED). BUT WHEN THE TRACKS AND EXECUTION OF THEM STARTED TO GO DOWNHILL WE STUCK AROUND UNTIL THE END FOR ONE REASON AND ONE REASON ONLY AND THAT WAS ARNAV AND KHUSHI. AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTIONING THAT.

TOWARDS THE END, IPKKND SURVIVED JUST CZ OF SARUN'S ONSCREEN CHEMISTRY. OTHER SHOWS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THIS AT ALL!

SO ONCE AGAIN A BIG BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO OUR SARUN FOR PORTRAYING ARSHI SO WELL. AND WE SHOULD REALLY BE THANKFUL TO GUL AND HER TEAM OF CVS FOR GIVING U TWO OF THE VERY BEST WRITTEN CHARACTERS EVER TO GRACE INDIAN TELEVISION FOR THE BEST PART OF 25 YEARS.

Yes, I read that article

They have to rely on good content -
since the lead-pair fail to generate the necessary chemistry

Well at the start the story kept us hooked along with the chemistry of Sarun.

One point TV and media missing still is that there is a difference between making Content oriented shows and gimmick oriented shows. Content build the premises for characters and tries to add some logic while gimmicks throw something to attract majority section of audience who multi-tasks cooking/kid supervision with TV watching. For them, they dont care with logic, layered characterization, how and why a character is doing it blah blah.
Irony is that people are taking these gimmicks to be content and publicizing that they are focusing on content. I am considering kitchen politics, OTT lady villains, sudden change of tracks etc into Gimmicks.

Why IPK became so dear to heart is already said by members posted before me in this topic. There was no rush at all when setting the premises for ArShi and also other characters. May be from Nainital track, people fully got glued to ArShi and their chemistry. After contract marriage, there is no synch in the tracks progressed but ArShi/SaRun took us along. Surprisingly, based on some old post, IPK had seen highest TRPs when there is no nonsense which is also a golden period for younger section nationally/intlly. I dont consider Sheetal/MrsIndia tracks which are nonsensical as gimmicks but were simply added because CVs dont know how to proceed with the show.
