Glass and Blood
After an exhausting day at work, Arnav and Akash retired to their respective bedrooms, both longing to be in the arms of their wives.
Arnav walked in cautiously, wanting to surprise her. But the room turned out to be empty. Frowning, he walked to the pool-side, and was horror-struck at what he saw. Broken shards of glass lay everywhere, smeared with sickly red.
All rational thought flew out of his window as he began yelling Khushi's name.
A worried Akash entered. "Bhai?" Frowning at his brother's stiffness he peeked over Arnav's shoulder and was shocked at what he saw. "Bhai, what happened?!"
"I-I don't know Akash!" Arnav muttered and began yelling Khushi's name again.
"Bhai there is no one at home'." Akash said worriedly.
"No one?"
"I mean, Nani is sleeping. Di, Payal and Khushiji aren't home'.!"
"What"
"Yeah Bhai' I-I hope they'" he trailed away.
All of the worst scenarios formed in Anrav's mind. One of them had gotten hurt and the other two probably accompanied the victim to the hospital.
Akash and Arnav exchanged a worried look and fished out their mobiles and dialed their respective wives' number.
They waited, but No Answer.
Arnav was now scared out of his wits.
"Bhai, I will call Di'." Akash said, fumbling with his phone.
"Come on, Di please pick up'!" Arnav thought.
"It's ringing'" Akash mouthed.
Arnav nodded.
The call went through. "Hello?" Anjali whispered.
"Di!" Akash exclaimed in relief.
"Akash?" Another whisper.
"Di, where are you? And why are you whispering?" Akash said.
Arnav looked up immediately. Why was Di whispering! Something must be terribly wrong!
"Speaker!!!" Arnav mouthed to Akash.
Akash nodded and set the phone on speaker just as Anjali whispered "Akash, I am at the hospital right now. Payalji and Khushiji are with me and Payalji is at the moment talking to a doctor. Call me later and please don't tell Chhote'.!"
And Anjali hung up, leaving two terrified brothers.
If Di had said not to tell Chhote, it probably has something to do with Khushi'..! Arnav paced up and down the room, frustrated.
"Akash, which hospital could they have gone to?"
"I don't know Bhai'. Most probably City Hospital'." Akash muttered, genuinely worried about his Bhabhi.
"Well, what are we waiting for'!" Arnav growled as he grabbed the keys to his car, with Akash following him.
In a record time of fifteen minutes, Arnav and Akash reached City Hospital.
They stormed in through the doors of the hospital and asked at the reception. "Uhm, Khushi Singh Raizada?"
The lady looked at her records and gave Arnav a smile. "She is up on the third floor. Third room on the left'"
As Arnav and Akash rushed upstairs, Arnav's worry deepened. He was hoping the nurse would say that no Khushi Raizada had come to the hospital'
Soon, they were headed towards the said room. They saw Anjali and Payal sitting outside staring anxiously at the door in front of them.
"Payal!"
"Di!"
Both Anjali and Payal looked at the men and Anjali shook her head. "Uff, I should have known you would tell Chhote, Akash'"
"Di, what happened!" Arnav almost yelled.
Anjali shrugged. "Nothing serious'"
"Di, don't lie! You AND Payal came to the hospital with Khushi! What happened to her'.!"
"Arnavji, wo we were eating samosas in the morning and Khushi began to vomit violently' She couldn't even tolerate the smell'.."
But where did blood fit into all this?
Arnav narrowed his eyes at Anjali and Payal. "You are still hiding something'"
Anjali and Payal exchanged a guilty look. "Well, she fainted as well'" Anjali admitted.
"What, why didn't anyone tell me!"
"You didn't pick up the call!" Anjali said.
"And''?"
"And nothing'!" Anjali said.
"Stop lying dammit! Di, I saw the blood all over the poolside! Even pieces of broken glass!"
"Blood? Glass?"
"On poolside'.?"
Just then the door opened and Khushi walked out beaming.
Aaj mausam hai suhaana
Maa ban ne ka hai bahaana
What the, What the, Wha-
She stopped as she saw Arnav there and blinked at him. "Arnavji, aap?"
All the four had frozen when they heard Khushi's song.
Payal reacted first. "I am going to be a Mausi!!!!"
"No Payal Chachi'." Akash muttered, dazed. Bhai was going to be a father? Unbelievable!
Anjali laughed in delight, while Arnav stared at Khushi.
"Arnavji?" Khushi called out anxiously. "Aren't you happy? Should I-"
"Oh, no no." Arnav said startled out of his trance and forgetting his surroundings kissed Khushi's lips.
Akash cleared his throat, while the two ladies blushed at the PDA.
When Arnav and Khushi pulled apart, Arnav smiled. "Oh, this was why you were here!"
"Yes Chhote, what else did you think? I thought that by telling you about her nausea and vertigo I had made it clear!"
"I thought-"
"Seriously. I can understand though' You were never that good at Bio as a kid'" Anjali giggled.
"But Bhai, then what was the blood we saw!"
Everyone exchanged a worried look while Khushi asked "Blood, what blood?"
After being told of the situation, Khushi paled. "Did anyone check on Naniji?"
After a moment of silence, everyone rushed towards the exit.
Ten minutes later, they were all at Shantivan and on their way to Nani's room. Arnav threw the door open.
Nani was lying on the bed and Laxmi was bleating in front of her'.
Khushi gasped as she saw Laxmi's mouth smeared with red. "Laxmiji what did you do!"
"Laxmiji is a vampire!" Anjali mutter-exclaimed.
The four of them had soon shooed Laxmi away and went to Nani, afraid of what they will see. To their surprise, Nani was sleeping peacefully with a smile on her face. She mumbled something that sounded close to 'Rajendraji, aap bhi na'!'
Everyone blinked, and Anjali, Arnav and Akash burst into silent chuckles.
"Who is Rajendraji?" Khushi asked, befuddled. Payal looked equally confused.
"Rajendrapratap Raizada'." Arnav chuckled.
"'.Was our Nanaji'" Anjali giggled.
All the five were giggling and walked out of the room.
But once again'Same question. Where did that blood come from!
"Arnavji, where did you say you saw the blood'.?"
"By the pool'." Arnav shuddered.
Khushi walked to the pool and saw red. Slowly, she walked into the glass-scattered floor while Arnav yelled "Khushi, are you crazy!"
"Arnavji, wait na'.!"
She saw a shard of glass smeared with blood, and some white paper stuck to it. Khushi carefully picked it, while Arnav muttered profanities about his wife's craziness.
Khushi read the red-smeared paper. "H-E-I-N-Z. Heinz."
She blinked twice and burst out laughing. To make sure, she grazed one finger against the red and put it in her mouth.
"KHUSHI!" Arnav and Payal yelled, horrified. Did pregnancy hormones make women crave for blood?!
"KHUSHIJI!" Akash and Anjali yelled.
Khushi simply giggled and said "It's ketchup'.!"
"Wha-!"
"Di, remember we were eating samosas right? Laxmi must have knocked down the bottle of sauce after we left' That explains the red on her mouth'. And as for this'" Khushi pointed to the mess around her "'.It's all ketchup'.!"
