Arshi, same here. My love for everything filmy be it movies, songs, etc comes from my father. My father too has a huge collection of songs starting from KL Sehgal. He would sing 'Babul Moraai' in so many different variations, just to make us all laugh. When cds came out, he bought a cd compilation of the best Saigal songs. That's when I came to know what talent this singer had. No wonder, Kishore Kumar was his die hard fan. The next time I go to my parents' house, I should ask him for that cd.Since I am on the topic, just a little info. The song 'Babul Morai', considered one of the classics from KL Saigal, was done in a single shot, without any cuts in the middle, along with the live recording of the song, with musicians playing their instruments behind the camera. What a feat that was!Me too, grew up watching movies of different times, different genres, different languages. Only thing was, couldn't watch much of the classics from Hollywood or listen to Western music.
This is good stuff!

this is gorgeous, ina. that was really the only moment that kept playing back in my head after 94, but never thought of reversing it. 😆. the truth is sitting in the reverse isn't it? 😳
Hi Horizon, thanks for sharing your prehistoric songs too. 😆 I grew up listening to equal doses of Telugu and Hindi film songs, and also the classical Telugu devotional songs, all packed in those gramophone records. Then, as I grew up in the ghazal era, got into them deep. I love ghazals a lot, give me one anytime of the day, any place, I would listen to it 'n' no. of times. Talat Mahmood has such an unique voice, perfect for ghazals. I have a collection of Jagjit Singh and Talat Aziz gazals too. Ya, Jagjit Singh's loss is still unbelievable. The talk of the movie 'Nikaah' in another post reminded me of the ghazal, 'Chupke chupke raat din'. Arshi, thank you for the invitation. You know, I somehow, was never interested in visiting any foreign country, even though, I have relatives all over the world. But now, I want to visit US, just to meet all you ladies staying there, and also Singapore. Indi, didn't we discuss about never say never, sometime ago. I think this is another such moment. 😊
Aww.. how did I miss this convo.. about prehistoric songs.. I must be there..:)
Hmm.. Arshi, I am not sure about Durga but do expect a trip from me to your place for your collections, and sufiana and Ghazals! No hard feelings but Sehgal some how was not on top of list for us as we essentially grew up with with our parents likes and dislikes. Rafi, Lata yes.. and our entire family is a huge fan of Talat Mohammad. and Hemanth da too. We have collections after collections of the latter two on gramophone records.. Oh yeah.. we are prehistorics!!:)
First it is melody that catches our attention and make us fall in love and then the lyrics makes it linger in our hearts for long. Still can't believe Jagjith Singh is not with us any more! I feel if God has a voice that would be like Jagjith Singh's! And ofcourse the ever eternal Mehedi Hassan!
Not much into Western, but do love a lot of soft pop love songs.
And, here I am watching all chikini chamelis for my "chote"!! Ofcourse fortunately he likes good music and listens to melody too. And lately we sing all Parkways in our vicinity in the tune of Rabba ve.. we have a Grand Parkway, a West Park way etc. and you can imagine the tune..:)
