Is it Gul who conceptualised him?
The directors who created him?
The CVs who etched him?
Or Barun who portrayed him?
While it is true that all of them get credit for the magic of ASR, let us look at how much impact an actor has
A poor or mediocre actor can completely destroy a story and character no matter how well written it is
An Umrao Jaan with Rekha was a classic, and the remake was a damp squib
An excellent actor can make even an ordinary script dazzle, just by the sheer force of their
personality
So many of Amitabh Bachchan's later movies are examples of this
Even today Amitabh or Amir Khan can elevate ordinary scenes to iconic levels just by their talent
The reverse is unfortunately not true
Poor presentation will dilute even the best written scenes
I am not by any means placing Barun in the same league as Amitabh or Amir
He has a long long way to go before his name can be taken in the same sentence as these icons
He has lots to learn and accomplish before that
But in his depiction of ASR, he has certainly created magic
He has shown a potential to one day be able to attain the same league
He has made ASR fascinating, mysterious, magical, desirable, loveable, yet very very flawed and imperfect
He has played a very very complex character almost perfectly
I have not seen , on Indian TV ever, and in Bollywood rarely, such a real and believable portrayal of a character
So to me , while GUL and team certainly deserve credit for creating ASR
It is Barun who has created the magic of ASR
It is Barun who has made ASR
as much as ASR has made Barun
To take away credit from Barun is not fair.
It is he who made it happen on screen!!
