The popular image of the ideal wife/woman who is expected to be devoted and submissive to her husband. The image of an Angel who was passive and powerless, meek, charming, graceful, sympathetic, self-sacrificing, pious, and above all--pure. I am quoting few lines from Canto IX, Book I, "The Sahara", from the Angel In the House. It gives a very clear picture of what is ideal/ expected behavior of an ideal woman/ wife.

Man must be pleased; but him to please
Is woman's pleasure; down the gulf
Of his condoled necessities
She casts her best, she flings herself.
How often flings for nought, and yokes
Her heart to an icicle or whim,
Whose each impatient word provokes
Another, not from her, but him;
While she, too gentle even to force
His penitence by kind replies,
Waits by, expecting his remorse,
With pardon in her pitying eyes;
And if he once, by shame oppress'd,
A comfortable word confers,
She leans and weeps against his breast,
And seems to think the sin was hers;
And whilst his love has any life,
Or any eye to see her charms,
At any time, she's still his wife,
Dearly devoted to his arms;
She loves with love that cannot tire;
And when, ah woe, she loves alone,
Through passionate duty love springs higher,
As grass grows taller round a stone.

Brilliant post Munchy.
Great to see you back on this forum.

Lavanya was one of my favorite character in the show till they started with the Khushification of Lavanya.
Apparently Lavanya was not considered good enough to marry Arnav by Arnav's family because she wore western clothes , was independent, was Arnav's sexual partner ( I am assuming this), did not know how to cook, had no knowledge about festivals and rasams and the list goes on and on.

SP has the tagline of "Rishta wohi , Soch nayi".

So according to SP if a woman wears short clothes then she has lost her roots and has embraced western society .
A man can drink all the booze he wants and if woman drinks then she is called "loose".
If a woman gets married then her career has to take a backseat and she has to adhere according to her husband's wishes, how is this for Nayi soch?

I fail to understand this nayi soch.
I blame both .
The channel as well as this hypocritical society .
They dish out because we are willing to take it.
That is why SP has the highest GEC ranking and is on top.
That is what their Nayi soch is.

As far as SP's tagline goes, it is just a tagline. It is the positioning the channel took to differentiate itself from other channels when it underwent change. With clear positioning, it becomes easier for sales team members to go and sell their products (serials here) to the media houses/brands directly. Sponsorships get finalised basis the concept the serial will be based on (in case of new serials) or the TRPs (in case of on going serials). With the restructuring, SP started selling the idea that they are here to offer content that are for the new woman, today's woman. This is all for presentations & sales pitches. Now , lets come to reality.

SP started airing the shows and each show got its own set of audience which lead to TRP. Now basis the TRP, they started charging the brands for advertisement. More TRP = higher advertisement charges. And higher charges is what SP, or any channel for that matter, is looking for as this is all about profit & expansion at the end of the day.

So if a channel decides a show is not attracting enough sales as per its set targets, chances of the show getting axed gets maximised. So for any show to continue, it must garner results. This desired result could again vary. If the goal to be achieved by the channel is increase in popularity, then the show will be measured accordingly and if the goal is increased sales figure, parameter for judgement will be different. If the case in question is the first of the aforementioned, then the channel might decide to continue airing the show even if it isnt making or breaking the balance sheet for the channel. To balance the business side, the airing timing could get changed.

The core audience for most of the hindi daily soaps is the housewife. This because it is safe to believe she has the time to watch it from 7-9pm. And as they are the ones who are contributing maximum in generating TRP, the shows made keeping their tastes in mind.

And this is the audience who still believe, for whatever reason, women in short dresses = loose morals. So when we get characters like La, it becomes a problem coz a good girl in short dress is a concept which will still take ages to get accepted. MILs will still pine for sanskari, agyakari DILs who can cook, clean & look after their precious sons. Prospective grooms (who in all possibility dated mini skirt wearing chicks and also had a physical relationship with them) will look for young nubile virgins. The matrimonial ads will still advertise fair, convent educated comely girls and tall fair handsome men. The educated bride in all likelihood will not work after her marriage for whatever reason.
That's why characters like La despite having great potential will never get explored completely as the money is not coming from the modern day woman. It is coming from the stay at home middle aged home maker who is looking for a little bit of fantasy but yet not anything that is too difficult for her to believe and accept. Hence, the birth of these serials that try to talk to the modern woman on papers and speak to the traditional woman in actual. Coz this modern woman doesnt, in most cases, catch the actual telecast. She watches either online or the repeat telecast. Thats why the Yash Raj TV programmes started post 11 pm. They actually catered to today's generate but as the venture didnt delivered desired results, Sony axed it.

To me personally, La's character was neither here nor there. Why was she bitchy in the begining I dont know. She was bitchy just for the heck of it. Why she tolerated being treated like a doormat by ASR, I dont know. She came across as quite a feisty character to me. To prove to the Raizadas that she could also be an ideal bahu, why did she have to go through an image makeover almost overnight? Agreed, her dresses resembled slips most of the time. But couldnt she have done the same proving bit in trousers/jeans - tops? That way she still could have proven her worth without turning into Khushi part 2. Even on diwali, when nani got to know the more mature side of La, the credit was given to Khushi. That time I really wanted to fight with the creatives. 😡 Agreed, she was a bit immature with her ways earlier, but whatever she told her friends on Diwali was her. So why couldnt have nani told her "Good job!" even once? More baffling was La's complete lack of interest in ASR after she was accepted as the would be Raizada bahu. I mean if she did so much just to be with a guy, shouldnt she have spent some time, if not all, with him?

Because of all these inconsistencies in La's characterisation, I couldnt root for her all the time. Having said all these, she still remains 1 of my most fav characters on IPK. If we are discussing skin tones, I would any day got for her dusky tones. That girl always looked very glamourous to me. Expect in her Khushi avatar. If you ask me, no woman can look good in that avatar. 😆

Sorry for all the sales-positioning gyaan. But I felt it was necessary for me to bring across my point.

Cant wait for analyses on other IPK characters. 😊

Great post Munchy! Please expect more such tirades from me in future on this topic. 😊

PS - If I wrote so much on my views about La, ASR will make me go berserk! 😃

Hahahaha, no I'm saving all of that for the next character in the series. You know how I don't like to intrude in the conversation once started, like with my FF updates. Plus I was busy going berserk on Chains, as well as trying to write my own update. But I'll come back soon with the next character analysis and my notes on what I'm reading here, it's amazing stuff and I'm loving this discussion.

This is such a great post.

During the initial several months of the show, I remember having a great deal of affection for Khushi's character and feeling somewhat indifferent towards Lavanya. And I remember exactly when it changed and when in the span of several weeks, Khushi's character turned me off completely.

For someone like Khushi, who was portrayed as a girl who supposedly stood for morality and the principle of things, she was unable to resist ASR in those "weak moments" forgetting that he was another woman's boyfriend. Watching that almost-kiss scene between them by the pool before he was intercepted by that phone call - I think that was the moment when I checked out from being emotionally invested in Khushi's character. It became quite difficult to watch the "romantic" scenes thereafter because it essentially showed such blatant disregard for another woman's affections. It was incidentally also around the same time when Lavanya showed a genuine understanding of Khushi's predicament, in that moment when she happened upon what another comment referred to as the 'violence in the room'. For me, those were defining moments that distinguished the essence of the two women; who truly reflected more empathy and substance underneath and who seemed to me 'all talk' (admittedly partly due to her age and naivete, maybe). Regardless, the damage was already done...

You provided such a good deconstruction of the character, munchy... of all the characters whose potential remained unexplored, Lavanya's for me was the greatest loss.

She is not too much into Lavanya, she is discussing each character of the show in regards to Feminism. She will come to Khushi, ASR, etc too. Please do not misunderstand the post and the comments given there and give your opinions based on the topic discussed.

I think you completely misunderstood the intent of the post.
Read the initial description again. Please.
