I am confused here. I myself had a court marriage and my social marriage happened later. Now court marriage is also valid but yeah according to Hindu marriage act a social marriage is nrcessery. Now some people do both simultaneously . Anyway I was considered married after my court marriage. Now for Arhi they are married since they did the court marriage and also lived together for 6 months. It's NOT ILLEGAL that's for sure.
Btw phera is not necessary. Many people does marriage by putting sindoor and MS in the registry office only after signing for marriage.

Arhi's marriage is very much legal. Dadi says like that because she is 'Stupid Dadi'.

i'm a brahmin .. in my culture most important thg is 'daare' meaning giving away my dad gave me away to my husband ... then there were 'sapta padi' seven vows and then mangalsutra was there in front of fire .. fire is considered purest of all elements

different culture in hinduism have different customs .. for a society to accept a marriage it should witness the rituals and pandit has recite the mantars to call upon the god to bless ..

there is a kinda of marriage called gandhar vivah where the pair exchange garland in front of god .. but these are very recognized as its no ppl witness it .. if one says i'm not married and the other cant prove tht they r ..

all these rituals have meaning more importantly people has to witness it ..

Even a saat -phere wala Hindu marriage is not legal enough to be divorced . Once a wife , always a wife .
A properly legal marriage in India is the one that is registered in Marriage Registers office .
Otherwise you are left without any document to prove your marriage as Hindu marriages are not registered or documented any where .
In early days to prove that you are married and get spouse visa , you needed to show wedding pics but currently I guess one needs marriage certificates to apply for spouse visa .
I have just pointed out the legal aspect and not the social aspect .

in my opnion arnav and khushi are married but dadi is another case because she is really strict with rules and she believes that every ritual has to be follow in order to be considered as a couple in her eyes. i mean the rituals are important but once a guy ties mangalsutra and puts sinddor infront of fire and god they are married. i am a hindu myself. the pheras are basically vows that you have to give each other as a husband wife but mangalsutra and sindoor is the main thing that actually completes the wedding because after the pheras the groom does the sindoor and mangalsutra rasam.

I needed both marriage certificate and pics when I applied for my US visa . I think you need both.
But now I think only marriage certificate is needed.

But they did not seem to have registered their marriage.Otherwise Arnav would have shown dadi the legal documents. And even they did not take pheras. So can they be termed as having illegal relationship according to Indian law and society.

No it is not. One of my cousins didn't take the pheras. Even in court marriages there's only "Jaimala" rasam and marriage registration happens. Dadi is wrong here...
