Writers of India Forums... A Frustrated Request

tl;dr- Write properly. Don't just slam your face into the keyboard and hope the keys your nose hits forms a coherent word. Also, it's faster to type out full words than stupid, immature, unreadable and quite frankly just plain embarrassing intentional typos.
edit: I am referring specifically to the writing in FFs, OSes, SSes and serious posts- not comments. Also, I mean deliberately rubbish spelling lyk d1z, not just accidental finger slips or grammatical errors as you type too fast.

warning:: The following contains unnecessary amounts of internet rage and frustration 😆. If you are easily offended, butthurt and/or cannot handle constructive criticism despite being one of the people this rant is targeted at, then G.P.I.T. Okay? Thanks.

Okay so- today I saw an FF with a title that sounded really promising- so promising in fact that I actually OPENED it. This is a big deal for me. I read the synopsis and it sounded absolutely fantastic- I could see the potential for an absolutely gripping story opening out in front of me. It was the kind of story that inspires me, as a writer, to write.

But I knew that I would never ever EVER be able to read this story because of one thing:

d s1n0psyz w0z rittun lyk d33s.

Are you kidding me?

How in blazes am I supposed to read and enjoy your story if I am having to rouse the 11 year old child inside me who used to use MSN from a 7 year hibernation in order to understand a WORD you have written?

Usually if a story is written with horrific grammar and punctuation or is written in script format as:

Arnav- fjhhgdfzkdj
Khushi- akjsdasj
Arnav- dksdhjsf
Khushi- hjsdsf

I just ignore it and make a mental note never to return. That's just a personal preference.

I hold no prejudice against stories where the writer's first language is evidently not English and so there are errors in syntax which are glaringly obvious to me. Often some of the best stories I have read have misused phrases or word orders but honestly, I can ignore that because the story is so good.

What really frustrates me and what has caused me to snap today is the fact that would it REALLY take THAT much extra time for you to not type like you just slammed your face into the keyboard and hoped that you hit the right keys? I REALLY, REALLY wanted to read this story but I literally just CAN'T because there are so many other stories out there which do not require me to STRUGGLE to interpret whether that '1' you have so casually thrown into that word is supposed to be an 'I' or an 'L'.

As an FF writer myself, I would personally consider it little short of disrespectful to my readers to write like an effing retard and I'd feel like I was insulting not only THEIR intelligence but also mine.

You might not believe me, but typing out full words is actually EASIER than trying to come up with some immature typo. And believe me when I say- with full hindsight- when you come back to it in the future you will just stare at it and say "WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME?!" or you will be unable to believe you actually had the audacity to even POST that mess.

I hope this message gets through to even just ONE person.
kthanksbye.
Rant over.

Typos...are premeditated short hand ...ermmm stupid me and I thought it was misspelled words and a few keys dropped here and there due to speed tying...(I am do I say a perp or a victim of this)...
oh well you learn something new everyday...
Just as a side I understand your frustration in reading...but would this not be better if it were to be a one on one with the person who wrote the story espeically if the story had potential...

Take a deep breath in and slowly let it out

Hahaha understand your frustration, but everyone has a preference in writing the way they want.
I used to write in script format (shudders at the memory) but now I write in a different style. I may dabble in another style later.

Maybe create your own story from the plot that inspired and caught your attention, give credit, and entertain people with your stories? (after asking the author - NOT condoning plagiarism here)

By a typo in this case I just meant any given error while typing. I don't know what the word is for a premeditated one except maybe idiocy.

I mean, text language is absolutely fine in comments and stuff, but as a WRITER... it just... makes no sense to me.

And it's to a lot of stories I've seen around, not just this one. It's just that this one really was pretty fantastic that I literally felt like groaning when I clicked on Chapter One and realised the entire story was written like that. From skimming it, the ideas were really good and the story seems to be just as good as I thought it would be... But it's just so badly typed out that it's borderline incoherent in places. There are too many chapters of the story out already for it to be fixable.

I'm just hoping this rant gets through to even just ONE potential writer and doesn't deter others from reading their stuff because of something so easily fixed.

Sigh.

So true!

Ditto!

Completely agree with you! :)

Okay yes, When writing a story there may be a few mistakes but than to such an extent like you've described, That's just ridiculous -.-

It gets difficult to understand what is written, Occasionally when i browse reading Fics and see that type of writing, I stop reading immediately. It's time-consuming trying to find out what there saying and e.t.c.

Ahaahahh :') I typed out all my frustration in the rant 😆.

Oh there are well written script-style stories, it's just a personal preference of mine not to read them just as it might be for a writer to write them. They just feel a little disjointed to me, if you get what I mean? 😊 It's just that so often they're the ones with the horrific 12-year-old-on-MSN spelling as well that it's a self-preservation thing "Oh this looks interesting. Wait script formatting... Oh no BACK AWAY BACK AWAY BAAACK AWAAAYYY!!!" 😆

Alas I have too many stories on pause due to exams at the minute and probably shouldn't start another one until they're done. Also, it's more the kind of story I'd love to READ as opposed to write myself so it makes me sad that I won't.

Yeah, I mean the odd spelling mistake/ repeated word/ random sentence that has clearly accidentally been copied and pasted from somewhere else in the story (*cough*I-do-that-all-the-time*cough*) is understandable from when someone types and then just misses it by accident on a quick proofread.

I'm so glad you feel me bruv... 😆 It's like, I don't want to discourage anybody but I'm just really frustrated at how ridiculous it is. I cannot be the only one who sees '1' instead of 'I' and clicks Backspace, never to return. So surely it's in their best interest to just try and type normally.

I honestly don't understand how anybody can use the argument "It's quicker." either.

No... t1p1n 1yc dz 1z nt kwikaa.

If anything, it takes longer. 😆
