The Distance Between Us
It was early morning and Khushi stood on her balcony with a cup of tea in her hand. Holding the cup in her right hand and reaching out her left hand to place it under the open sky, she felt the drops of rain hit her palms. She caught the drops in her fist and looked up at the gray clouds. She moved out from under the shade of the balcony so she could feel the rain hit her body. As the rain drops caressed her lips a sad smile lit her face.
She heard the chirping of birds from the tree nearby and she stared up at their nest. She saw the bird place her kids safely in the nest and then fly off in the rain to search for food. Khushi stared at the bird's wings as it flew. Just then she saw a plane fly above her in the distant sky with the bird flying not too far below it. How she envied the bird at the moment, for it had the freedom to fly and be where ever it wished to be. She imagined the bird following the plane to a farway destination and she wished deep down that she could do the same, then she would be able to fly to him, be with him, her love, her dream, her life...her fiance, Arnav.
Arnav was really not one to express his feelings openly. Khushi had learned that much about it over the past year they had been together. It had taken him so long to finally propose to her, and he had found just the most perfect time to do so. He had proposed to her last night while he was leaving to New York to complete his MBA at NYU Stern.
Khushi blushed, laughed and cried all at once remembering the moment. She couldn't believe that she didn't even get to spend any time with him after to celebrate the occasion, because he immediately left to board the plane.
As she stood here today on her balcony, she felt even the sky was crying for her. The tears were of mixed emotions of both the joy of having found her soulmate and the depression of separation. As raindrops continued to fall on her hands Khushi looked at the diamond ring on her ring finger and smiled. How would she ever last a year away from him? She wondered...so many questions clouding her mind at the moment...
Would he forget their love? Would he find someone else? Would he change into someone she no longer would recognize? Was their love strong enough to last beyond the distance?
Only time held the answers...
