It's not meant offensively, I was raised in the UK and it's just a very distinctive phrase which nobody except Indians raised IN India say. And those who do say it... say it a lot.

We joke about it because it's a habit or quirk you can't really help but notice, it's cute more than anything.

I suppose it's the context with how one says it. I myself use 'yaar' with my indian friends but when it comes certain times and places, how one utters it does matter. I don't know if the hint of condescension I heard was intended or not. If it's in good jest, so be it.

Let's hope it was one of those missed in translation thingies 😊

Thank you for your take, you did not offend at all.

I honestly think it was just over animated shock and excitement😆 but I can understand that it seemed like a snort but she screamed "I love it!" twice - I think it was just her amusement and surprise that a fellow collogue is also crazy about the show!😆 I think it's just genuine intrigue and shock at how massive the show is over here and obviously she is cashing in on it!😆

Definitely agree. I would never say it to offend or mock someone, but I have quite a few international students from India at my college who I'm good friends with (this is brilliant as every day we have a massive OMFG DID YOU WATCH ISS PYAAR LAST NIGHT?! conversation) and one of them in particular becomes a "yaar"ing FIEND when she's excited to the point where it doesn't even sound like a word any more. :')

So I'll just say something like "You done... YAAR?!" and she'll laugh.

I doubt she was being mean. Barun seems like such a sweetheart, why would anyone be mean about him?

I am willing to give her the benefit of doubt with the "yaar" bit, but the snorting irks me.
So merriam-webster defines a cult as "great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad." Based on this, you could call us a cult but I dont like that word because it implies religious following. If the last few weeks have taught this forum anything than it would be that even though we love Arnav we cannot abide by all of his actions. Christ, the forum went into WWIII mode and we are still feeling the aftereffects.
And the snorting is still uncalled for. If she did her research she would have realized that we are not just a bunch of squealing fans, she would have realized how truly unique this forum is. Yes we fawn over the almighty, but we do so much more here than just that...we analyze, we write, we criticize, we make funny posts. No matter what atleast Barun gets international appreciation and lets hope she does interview Sanaya as well. I don't like how she got left out in the SPA awards. She deserves just as much appreciation as Barun because this show would not have the same fan following without either one of them. Their combination makes this show perfect.

I agree with everything you're saying. People in England are usually a bit "W*F" when it comes to Indian dramas, but Iss Pyaar... EVERYBODY WATCHES IT MAN. From my dad and uncles to my aunts, brother, mum and grandmas.

She probably got so excited because it's united people who are usually so critical.

yes Noreen has made her show (or atleast a good segment) run with this whole thing and she is milking it to the max even b4 actually getting him to commit for a interview...Oh well it is her business to run a show and she knows a Golden Hen when sh sees one...
Re Accents I have listened to her show and many other Brit /Indian comperes/presenters while their accent is brit they reserve a sorta Indian twang for anything indian...even pronunciation in Hindi and other indian words...probably for authenticity but ironicaly come around sounding like they are taking the mikey...
There are a few threads just on her intended interview on this froum and probably a lot more to come once it is aired...so she is not far off on the forum itself...but I guess ...she has subject matter, he gains international platform and fans get more of him so all is win win...

Thank you and I think you're right about the accent part - it sort of alternates between her saying it with a Indian accent which can sound mocking and other times courtesy of the British accent she ends up pronouncing his name "BAAARun"😕😆 - But it happens to me, some people have two versions to say their name, one with a desi and the other with a non desi😆

But completely agree, she is so milking this Barun thing, I mean she has everyone tuning in tomorrow to talk more about IPKKND and confirm Barun's interview!I guess mutual benefit!😆
😆😆😆😆

So true, we're cynics when it comes to Indian Drama but there is irony is how many people watch IPKKND - I mean from young kids to indifferent uncles as you said😆 - breaking the mould and all!😆

Yes there is certainly that stereotype alive and well. Many feel the need to make fun of Indian soaps. To be honest, some of it is well deserved (Kekta shows mostly, sorry). But I would argue that IPKKND changed all that and Indian soaps are gaining more momentum. It has a Pride and Prejudice appeal and Jane Austen is not an easy cup of tea. In fact, I have seen some trash Bollywood movies that could not hold a candle to the acting on IPKKND by Barun and Sanaya.

Very well said, I absolutely, totally and unconditionally agree with you!!!!! These two are exceptionally skilled actors, and can create magic together, only need good script and direction.
