Sush, watching shows was just on/off for me until IPK happened. One of the biggest attractions for me has been the charcaterisation...too much of butchering I would loose interest..because that has me fretting and I dont want to lose sleep over that. I loved the arrogant inteliigent business man ASR and the fiery chullbully kushi and inspite of the stark difference how they helplessly fall for each other...thats the USP of this show.

The light hearted way they have maintained all through out...has kept me glued to this show. This PH has always maintained this even if there is drama it doesnt last for more than 10 days...they immediately bring in some humour...we need to have some patience as this is the biggest twist they are at..though as cliched as it looks with some illogical stuff...we need to give them some time...nothing else about the side actors or villain has interested me...Its just Arhi all the way and ofcourse I am interested to see the dark past of the hero and how kushi will be the soother for his wounds to heal.

Diya, pretty sure this is the only way the genre works --- the good guy always wins in the end. This is something we know going in. The only way the story works is if the villain is able to outsmart the hero consistently until the denouement. For instance, The Dark Knight works because of the Joker. He is smarter and more charismatic than Batman. We know that Batman will win in the end - it's because the Joker is such a formidable enemy that we feel the tension.

As for Arnav, he isn't ASR the sharp witted strategist when it comes to either of the 2 women who matter so much to him - his Di and Khushi. When it comes to them his much vaunted smarts desert him. I think we're meant to feel and empathize with his vulnerability. Whether this makes IPKKND the same as the run of the mill soaps, I couldn't say. I can certainly get on board with the idea that the indestructible, super intelligent hero has his weak spots that a smart villain exploits.

IPKKND may not be that different from the other serials we are used to watching but it definately stands out amongst the rest. Aside from the leads whom I love to watch, there is also the fact Khushi is written as a strong young woman who rises to the challenges thrown her way. Khushi is shown as someone who fights back instead of one who just cries and takes whatever is dished out to her, she just has that fire to her character

I also like the twists to the rather predictable storylines on this show. Take the current one for instance, I was expecting to see just Khushi being isolated from her family but based on the precap it looks like she won't be alone. Arnav is also being isolated from his family because of his sudden marriage, it is a battle that both are going to end up facing together. There is also the fine line between love and hate in their marriage, wanting to hate each other but being unable to.
Basically I just can't get enough of this show, I'm hooked!

It's not a totally different kind of Indian TV soap plotwise...it can't be really as it needs to capture the attention of such a wide demographic.

But it is different in other ways. For me, the principal reason it stands out head and shoulders above the others is the content and presentation of it (excepting the bloopers, continuity and editing!).

I've not seen the production house's other show but I've watched other shows and I've not seen another Indian serial that does things the way this one does. 😎

I grew up in the UK without ever watching an Indian serial...they have only been available in the last 15 odd years as a result of cable/satellite (I was in my 20s/30s!). Up until IPKKND, I only ever tracked UK/US TV shows.

IPKKND caught my interest from the episode where Khushi got stuck in the office with ASR and I've not looked back since (though I have to say, the dupatta in the face thing did annoy me on that first viewing!).

The reason it caught my interest?

> The chemistry between the leads...it sizzles on the screen...and yes...ASR is HOT!...but it needs two to tango and my god do they tango! They exude sexual tension in a way that other Indian soaps can only dream of...the scene where Khushi's caught up in the lights and he unravels her...pure and unashamed innuendo! Supreme acting.

> It's compelling...from the beginning, they detest each other and it's portrayed in such a way that you just HAVE to keep watching to find out how they'll ever end up liking each other, let alone loving one another.
> The humour in the show...seriously, I have NEVER laughed so much at scenes in any TV serial...the part where she's testing her Dhak, Dhak and doesn't know ASR can see her in the window...priceless!!! I had tears streaming down my eyes.

> Scenes and story development...the whole introduction of Arnav to Khushi at Sheesh Mahal, the ensuing encounters and battles, having Lavanya living in whilst she's being trained, the way they built up and handled the near kiss at Diwali...they are different, and they are all handled so well that you're left wanting more and wanting to see what happens next.

> Characters...We all know that ASR is a total first for an Indian male lead character but they place complexity in even the side characters, e.g. Mamiji...I know they're turning her into a typical Saas but before Payal, she was hilarious...a bit OTT but she's had some fantastic lines and they made sure that with the gibes, they've also shown that she has a heart and loyalty to the family...not your typical female antagonist...they've shown that she is the way she is through insecurity.

> Clothes...it seems this is an integral and essential part of an Indian soap. I know I'm put off watching some Indian soaps just because of the way they dress! With the exception of Mami, I love some of the sari's, outfits and jewellery that they've selected on IPKKND...they're elegant rather than 'in your face' showy, as with most other soaps. I actually wouldn't mind wearing some of the stuff you see. I also love how the Gupta's normal, every day wear is just that and not the impossibly impractical stuff you see in other soaps. The Raizadas (again, excepting Mami) are the same...their dress befits their status. Nani is the epitome of understated elegance.

Bottom line...if it wasn't a different kind of soap...would we (sane, intelligent, rational people) be such crazed fans of it? 😃

Sorry for the long reply...didn't realise I had so much to say! 😲

It resonated with me completely, so I was happy to read all you had to say 😊. Although, I do think all of the sane, intelligent, rational people have lost their marbles and become rabid fans 😆

Sush'excellent question.

IPKKND has been different from other shows so far. The reason are many

1) The treatment of this M&B story so far has been excellent. It has been light, colorful and fun-filled with a healthy dose of old world (dupatta) romance that make hearts go hmmm'..

2) The storyline (what little we have had as of yet) has stayed true to characters.

3) The show has managed to balance traditional as well as modern thought process without making it tedious. A good example is that they went through all the marriage rituals and their meanings without shoving it down our throats.I for one learnt something new.

4) There is ample eye candy on the show along with excellent chemistry between the leads.

5) This is a family after my own heart. There has been very little discord in the family except for latest fiasco.

However the fact remains that a show cannot survive on candy floss alone, it needs a strong storyline. We are at crossroads where PH will have to make some serious decisions regarding the future of the show. If the PH truly tries to give us the intense storyline(I will discuss this later) then they will be taking a huge risk. If they succeed, they will redefine telly shows much like Ekta Kapoor did a decade ago and if they fail'it will be quite a fall given where the show is on charts now. Most PH will hesitate taking that risk because

1) The characters and the natural progression of this storyline means gray characters and intense intimate scenes. The slot for this show is 8pm which means all intense scenes have to be family friendly (there goes the passion and any hint of darkness possible'..). Also most Indian viewers have little appetite for gray characters and a truly engrossing storyline despite all our complaining. All we are looking for is a couple of mushy scenes, a bucket of tears and family politics. Anything more than that baffles majority of viewers. The TRPs might fall and the channel will force the PH to give viewers what they want.

2) The last show from PH started much like this one but got lost somewhere along the way'..thanks to TRP. The issues that needed more exploration got resolved quickly and the focus remained on mush and in later stages the conflicts seemed contrived. I hope PH have learnt something from that last experience and will not go the same route again.

Now onto intense storyline'. This can be a journey of two immensely prideful and passionate individuals caught in a difficult courtship dance. The family serves as a backdrop and a means to end to take the story forward. The show can actually appease everyone this time if executed properly'..we have three couples...PAYASH who will appeal to the viewers that love traditional do-gooder couples with Saas- bahu politics, Anjali and Shyam who will appeal to conspiracy loving viewers and Arhi for viewers who are looking for something new. All we need are characters that have some depth and a story that can transcend... therein lies challenge. Let me give couple of examples (I apologize but am on a roll here)

1) Arnav : We already know he is impulsive and mercurial with king sized ego and a mellowed down God complex. He is a commitment phobic with control issues (that might be related to tragedy in past). He inspires such absolute loyalty and respect in family that his cousin is not ready to take pheras with his beloved without his presence. Imagine how he would have felt to know that his BIL has been cheating on his sister and has rendered him helpless. This is not just about his sister but also loyalty and control. Furthermore he has send very clear signs that he is interested in Khushi but what does she do ...she chooses that two timing, penniless, married lawyer over him. What is he to do? He is gonna show her what she missed out on... he will get under skin, make her fall for him and then break her heart. Ofcourse it is also an appropriate punishment for Shyam for cheating on his sister. The only issue is that Khushi is getting under his skin instead and driving him crazy. He meant to make her lose her control but he is losing it instead. It would be even more interesting if the tragedy in past was related to some sort of marital fidelity issues.

2) Khushi: She is a spunky naive girl who ended up being collateral damage between two males. Her tragedy is that her champion is the same person who bought her into this situation to begin with. He never insults her or is violent. Passions run high between her and ASR and her heart goes pitter-patter at every smile of his but her emotions feel like a slap to her face as they add insult to the injury...how can she love one who has wronged her so and broken her dreams?'the more she resists, the more he ups his charm coefficient... She would rather die than accept that he impacts her.

3) Shyam: He was average person who did not want much, just tons of money,a loving beautiful wife who put him above all else and for whom he could play hero. He compromised with his wife's handicap hoping to be her savior and getting control over her money to achieve his ambitions the easy way but instead she always looked up to her brother instead of him who held purse strings and control over everything. He somehow got lost in his BIL ASR'S shadow. He was nothing more that Anjali's husband until on a fateful day, he got to play Khushi's hero. The high that came with it was unlike any other and he was very sure that she loves him bust is shy to accept. He even got her a job at ASRs partly because he was her champion and partly because he knew ASR will abuse her and he can play her hero forever. But everything went wrong, once again ASR bested him. Khushi seems to care more for ASR than him. He will do everything to get what he believes he deserves this time even if it means murder.

The point is for this show to stand apart we will need a different character treatment and channel agreeing to take risk. Unfortunately I have very little hope of that happenning given the spoilers.
