She was about to hit the ground when the figure ran towards her and caught her before she fell. She had her eyes shut, expecting to hit the ground with a thud! She didn't open them, even though she knew she hadn't landed. She was afraid, afraid to stare upon that hideous face once more. She suddenly felt herself being place gently on the ground, and heard a snarl as the figure turned away from her.
She slowly opened her eyes to the back of the figure, but she didn't dare look up.
"There is food in the dining hall," the figure said under his breath. His voice, even in a whisper was miraculously deep. With that the the figure dashed down the hall, turning right and out of sight.
Khushi lay there for a moment, motionless. There was something about that voice, that didn't quite match the face. The voice was deep yes, but it was sweet, there was something about it that penetrated through her and spoke to her soul. But that face...that face was that of, of a...monster.
His eyes, gleaming yellow, and his left cheek, full of scars. She couldn't quite remember the face, since she only saw a glimpse of it. But what she did see, sent shivers down her spine.
She lifted herself up, staggering to her feet. She stood there for a moment, a bit dumbfounded at what she should do.
"Oh dear dear," she heard a voice beside her made her jump. She turned around abruptly to find an old woman standing next to her. "Oh I'm sorry did I scare you?" asked the old lady. Khushi just stood there, not knowing what to say...who were all these people?
The old woman was rather chunky and wrinkled. She had a very soft face, and a smile that lit up her eyes. Her hair was shining grey, and she was probably half of Khushi's height. Surprisingly she moved around rather quickly, scurrying around like a raccoon. She bustled past Khushi dusting the walls as she went.
"Well my dear, won't you go have some food?" she asked. Khushi looked at her perplexed.
"Where am I? Who are you?" Khushi asked, ignoring the woman's question.
The woman stopped dusting, and turned to face Khushi, and smiled. "You have nothing to worry about my dear, your in safe hands. You are in the home of my master, Arnav Raizada and his pet dog found you unconscious in the woods last night...and well...well he told Arnav and they went and saved you." The woman smiled and went back to dusting, as if stating these facts just made everything okay.
"I don't remember a thing," Khushi said, rubbing her temple, which had suddenly began throbbing.
"Oh she is here, a guest, a guest!" Khushi turned around to see two more men approaching her. One was rather tall and lanky, with a skinny face and sharp features and the other was a short man, with a round belly and short legs.
"Must you be so loud?" asked the short man to the taller man.
"Must you take the fun out of everything, Randy?"
"I told you its Randhir, and you have been yelling all day about her being here, we all know-" suddenly the short man stopped talking, noticing Khushi looking at them. "Oh great, she sees us."
"Ah, our guest!" said the taller man, running towards Khushi, as the shorter man tried following him. "Hello madame, myself Gopu, and this..." he began waiting for the other man to catch up to him. Finally the short man came and stood beside him, panting, clearly out of breath. "And this is Randy!"
"Randhir!" the short man yelled at him. Then at the same moment they both bowed before Khushi.
"At your service," they said together.
"Pleased to meet you," Khushi said rather dumbstruck. "I really, I really don't know where I am..."
"Your at the house of our master, my lady" said Randhir.
"Yes, but...but..." Khushi said, not knowing what to say.
"Do not be alarmed, for our master is a kind hearted man, and you seemed to be in a lot of trouble when he found you," said Gopu.
"Yes, I...yes, trouble...but I need to leave, I need to go," Khushi said, beginning to walk past them.
"Oh you cannot leave my dear! Your hurt, and the woods are a terrible place," Gopu said, as the three of them began to follow her.
"Yes, but I need to leave, I need to go home," Khushi said as she continued walking.
"But my dear, you've only just arrived, and we couldn't possibly let you go home alone," said the old lady as she followed Khushi.
"Yes, but-" Khushi began.
"No buts! The master commands you stay here, until someone from your family comes to pick you up," said Randhir, as if there was no other option.
"Yes but how will anybody from my family know I where I am?" Khushi asked, stopping abruptly.
"Well we will send for them, send a letter," Randhir explained.
"No, I must go, I have to go," said Khushi beginning to run away.
"Stop my lady!" she could hear them screaming down the hall, but she kept on running. She had to go home, she had to know what had become of her house, what had happened to her uncle. She kept running down the hall, turning at random. Until finally she stopped, seeing a set of stairs. She began to run down the stairs, still hearing the voices of the servants behind her.
She reached the bottom of the stairs to notice a large wooden door, and she ran towards it. Just as she reached the door, she felt something running behind her. She stopped to turn around, screamed and ended up hitting her back against the door. She felt two hands slam against the door on either side of her. She looked up at the yellow gleaming eyes in front of her, too shocked to look away. The left eye had a noticeable white scar, running from the bottom of the eye to the middle of the cheek. "Didn't you hear what they said?" the voice asked her, that same deep voice she had heard before.
She trembled, attempting to speak, but the words were caught in her throat out of fear. "Its too dangerous to go out there, I'm surprised you were even out there alive," the voice continued.
"I...I..." she whispered, but she couldn't say much else.
"You will stay here, inform your family," the figure said, stepping away from her. Tears began brimming her eyes, and she began to cry. The figure looked at her perplexed and turned away. She saw that the servants were now standing at the bottom of the stairs, a look of concern washed over their faces. "Help her," the figure whispered under his breath, as he began to walk away.
The three servants charged towards her, as she began to fall, Gopu catching her fall.
"There, there, dear, there is no need to cry, the master will make everything all right," the old woman said as she wiped Khushi's tears.
They walked her towards another room, and sat her down on a large dining table. The room was as magnificent as any other room in the house. The dining table seemed the extend forever, with magnificent oak chairs, that had angels and flowers carved in to them with intricate detail. Like any other room, there was no pictures on the wall, but high ceiling and larger than life windows. The chandelier hanging from the ceiling was a wonder in itself, with probably over a thousand crystals.
It took less than five seconds for the servants to start bringing her food, Khushi had not seen so much food in her life. There was about twenty dishes, and rice and naan and every type of sweet you could imagine. Before Khushi could thank them they began stuffing her mouth with food. Khushi tried hard to keep up, their spoons were moving at a faster rate than their her mouth. Finally the spoons of food stopped coming in to her mouth and she breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you, thank you all so much," she said.
"It was no problem my child," said the old woman.
"Yes, no problem at all, the master had commanded it," said Randhir.
"How are you feeling now sweetheart? Oh silly me! I forgot to tell you my name is Asha, but you can call me Asha Aunty if you'd like" said the old woman.
"I'm fine now, Asha Aunty" Khushi replied. "I just need to rest," said Khushi as she got up.
"I will show you to your room me lady, I know the hallways can get a bit confusing," said Gopu.
"No please, don't bother...I insist, I'll find my own way up. You just do whatever you were doing," Khushi insisted.
"Are you sure my dear?" asked Asha.
"Yes, I'm sure," Khushi said. With that she walked away, going up the stairs and down the hall. A hundred thoughts were reeling in her head. Where am I? What is compelling me to stay...even if I go back, my life will be in danger...but what about my uncle. They wouldn't hurt him would they? No, no. He had run away, he wouldn't dare come back...and this place, why does this place seem so familiar? Why is she staying?
She wondered the halls aimlessly, clearly lost. Where was her room? She walked a few steps ahead, trying to remember the hallways. She stopped and looked around trying to recognize the hallways. She walked here and there, peering in to every dark room, trying to recognize her own. She past many door, until one door made her stop. Out of the darkness of one room, was a bright pink light, its colour was simply captivating. Out of curiosity Khushi stopped in front of the door. She looked around to see if anyone was coming. She slowly pushed the door open, which to her surprise swung open without a creak. She stepped in, searching for the source of the pink light. She walked further in to the room, she could see the light but could not tell from where it came. She stopped suddenly, trying to locate where this captivating light was coming from. She took a step towards the light. Another step, and yet another one until...BANG! The door slammed behind her.
She heard heavy breathing behind her, and a growl. She turned around, frightened as she heard something charging behind her. Suddenly she was pushed to the ground, as she felt the weight of a body pinning her.
