Hi everyone, IPK3 is just around the corner and I want to talk about antagonists.
I want to start off by saying that this is not meant to be a comparison post. This is me trying to analyze what good villain/vamp should be for Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? Season 3. I also want to try and educate you on what I think is a good villain. Please inform me if I did not make sense or derailed from what I was trying to do, or if I am comparing. That was not my goal.
Please note, I will be drawing on characters from differently serials made by Gul Khan, mainly Season 1 of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?.
I feel as though sometimes a villain or vamp becomes too extra, their plots and plans end up taking the screen space (SS) from the entire story, and it starts becoming about them. See Svetlana Kapoor of Dil Bole Oberoi and Tanveer Khan of Qubool Hai. If we know more history about the vamp than we do the FL, you have a problem. Antagonists should not be the main character. By definition, an antagonist is an obstacle for the protagonist. Someone the main characters must overcome in time. In IPK3, I don't think that this extra behaviour should happen to main villain because the point of the serial is something else, aka revenge. So we should not see an antagonist taking all the SS with their meaningless monologues.
And this is not to say that when a villain is taking up SS, it's inherently wrong. No no, when a villain plots, there needs to be an underlying meaning behind it. Like, why is this happening, what purpose does this serve, how will this benefit the story? Things in this sense. This is why Shyam Jha and Subhadra Devi are ideal antagonists, because no matter what they did, they always brought the main couple closer to each other.
Did you notice, that when Shyam succeeded or failed, something triggered between Arnav and Khushi? Whether Shyam's plans succeed or fail, they generally worked in the favour of the leads. For example, The Necklace that Shyam stole to frame Khushi, he failed and Khushi was brought closer to Lavanya and Shantivan. For example, when Shashi (Khushi's step dad) became paralyzed because of Shyam, it gave us ArShi's first hug and something they bond over and think about. It brought them closer. You see where I'm getting at? The villain needs to play a part in helping the story progress, willingly or unwillingly.
This is partly what I hope for in the villain of IPK Season 3. Whether it be Indrani (Chandni's evil mom) or Chandni's evil maasi. This villain needs to progress the story with their plots and schemes. They serve their purpose as to what they are meant to do. And we should remember that not every episode needs a villain looming over it.
I don't know who the villain of IPK3 is, who is the main antagonist? You tell me. Whether it's Indrani, maasi, Chandni's entire family or Advay himself, they need a purpose in the story. When we are watching this show together, I want all of us to think about these things. What is happening, why is it happening, and how does it benefit the story? The answers to these questions won't be in front of our faces and might be a mystery, it will require thinking.
Gul is not as incompetent as I say she is. I feel as though, her stories are a product of meta circumstances like TRP or things about actors. And in some cases, the writers can create a coherent story.
These are just my expectations and hopes for the antagonist of the series, and I know I shouldn't expect anything from a daily soap but it's nice to hope. This is my take and opinion though, what do you think? Do you agree with me, or disagree? I am open to a conversation.
