Hi everyone, IPK3 is just around the corner and I want to talk about antagonists.

I want to start off by saying that this is not meant to be a comparison post. This is me trying to analyze what good villain/vamp should be for Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? Season 3. I also want to try and educate you on what I think is a good villain. Please inform me if I did not make sense or derailed from what I was trying to do, or if I am comparing. That was not my goal.

Please note, I will be drawing on characters from differently serials made by Gul Khan, mainly Season 1 of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?.

I feel as though sometimes a villain or vamp becomes too extra, their plots and plans end up taking the screen space (SS) from the entire story, and it starts becoming about them. See Svetlana Kapoor of Dil Bole Oberoi and Tanveer Khan of Qubool Hai. If we know more history about the vamp than we do the FL, you have a problem. Antagonists should not be the main character. By definition, an antagonist is an obstacle for the protagonist. Someone the main characters must overcome in time. In IPK3, I don't think that this extra behaviour should happen to main villain because the point of the serial is something else, aka revenge. So we should not see an antagonist taking all the SS with their meaningless monologues.

And this is not to say that when a villain is taking up SS, it's inherently wrong. No no, when a villain plots, there needs to be an underlying meaning behind it. Like, why is this happening, what purpose does this serve, how will this benefit the story? Things in this sense. This is why Shyam Jha and Subhadra Devi are ideal antagonists, because no matter what they did, they always brought the main couple closer to each other.

Did you notice, that when Shyam succeeded or failed, something triggered between Arnav and Khushi? Whether Shyam's plans succeed or fail, they generally worked in the favour of the leads. For example, The Necklace that Shyam stole to frame Khushi, he failed and Khushi was brought closer to Lavanya and Shantivan. For example, when Shashi (Khushi's step dad) became paralyzed because of Shyam, it gave us ArShi's first hug and something they bond over and think about. It brought them closer. You see where I'm getting at? The villain needs to play a part in helping the story progress, willingly or unwillingly.

This is partly what I hope for in the villain of IPK Season 3. Whether it be Indrani (Chandni's evil mom) or Chandni's evil maasi. This villain needs to progress the story with their plots and schemes. They serve their purpose as to what they are meant to do. And we should remember that not every episode needs a villain looming over it.

I don't know who the villain of IPK3 is, who is the main antagonist? You tell me. Whether it's Indrani, maasi, Chandni's entire family or Advay himself, they need a purpose in the story. When we are watching this show together, I want all of us to think about these things. What is happening, why is it happening, and how does it benefit the story? The answers to these questions won't be in front of our faces and might be a mystery, it will require thinking.

Gul is not as incompetent as I say she is. I feel as though, her stories are a product of meta circumstances like TRP or things about actors. And in some cases, the writers can create a coherent story.

These are just my expectations and hopes for the antagonist of the series, and I know I shouldn't expect anything from a daily soap but it's nice to hope. This is my take and opinion though, what do you think? Do you agree with me, or disagree? I am open to a conversation.

Oh Jesal... You are absolutely right...
A villain is necessary but just don't go away with an overdose of it like QH, IB/DBO...
For me it destroy the essence of the show!

A well written post on the antagonists of the show.
And I agree with all the points you have mentioned above.
Their actions should bring the leads closer
And I hope this would be the case in Ipkknd3 as well.
We really don't need an overdose of villains and vamps in the show.

Hi Jesal,

Well written post but the point is we still don't know who is the antagonist here ? Who is the person responsible for Advay's family's destruction. I really want the revenge angle to be very well justified and if they are making Chandni the reason whatsoever go the whole way but I don't think that is going to happen. Chandni most probably is going to be a pawn in the game of destruction and that is why Advay is going to target her. I really want to see who the main evil person is who caused the whole thing to happen - Is it Indrani or Indrani's sister. The intrigue factor is really good - waiting for the first episode to see what happened to Advay's parents.

Yes, I think Advay will take on the shades of a villain, but he won't necessarily be one. I feel as though that the male lead and the villain should be two different characters, but in a revenge concept, we might not get that. If Advay does become a villain, he also needs a redemption.

Only time will tell. But I feel as though if Chandni was responsible, that would bring a unique shade to AdvNi, both of them are bad people in their own way and that feels different. But I have not expectations for this.

its too early to comment on IPK antagonist because we dont know about them...

but i have few words to share about your title - An art of making antagonist!!!

Antagonist is most misunderstood word in current fiction world! and that's the reason we hate seeing vamps on tv or read about them on novel!

People make antagonist to do all bad things just to make Protagonist look better. Thats actually not the right way. If you see old written version of mahabarat, there you can see Duryodhan was good son, strong and courageous, trusted and treated his wife well, also respected his friend (not completely for his own benefits). He committed a mistake to take revenge and became antagonist. he is not cruel or bad person as shown in new versions of mahabarat for trp. When you read these kind of antagonist , you wont actually feel annoyed when a part describes him in detail. it should be like both good and bad about antagonist as well as protagonist should be shown. We should analyse and decide who is better.

but current trend is to cover protagonist flaws they make antagonist to do bad things to unimaginable extent! when you see people doing these stuffs, you do get annoyed and hence hate vamps!

^^ deeps, waah kya baat hai.. Very well written. What an appropriate example of Duryodhan, whose character has always been assasinated in every possible way in the name of having flawless protagonists and rising trps, you have put forward to explain the reason behind your views..
Totally agree with u..

These days, i dont even expect to see a grey shaded character in Hindi serials..
Either one is totally black or totally white😆
Even those, who are shown to have both good and evil sides, last only for a few days to utmost a few weeks from the start, before their characters are made to stoop too low and finally turn out to be pathetic villains..

But i think, as u have said, its too early to make any guess about the evil people of ipk. Once the show goes on air and we are introduced to the characters, we can then have some ideas on the people involved in the AdvNi story..

Wow you make perfect sense. Antagonists become an integral part of all shows knowingly or unknowingly. Its like the story wont move further without them. Advay himself an antagonist in this show is one thing. But the list doesnt stop there. From the articles we got to know there are a handful of antagonists here. Plotting by antagonists day and night is ok for me as long as the leads react to them strongly. I for one would like to see how Advay and Chandni stand up to the antagonists. I wish their characters are not so helpless and they do defend themselves.

And in many shows, the antagonists are the ones to bring the lead couple together. With each of their spoiled plans, the leads come one step closer.😆
