Absolutely True
I would like to add one thing here..I feel an Antagonist is someone who brings out the best in Protagonist..As they say burai ke bina acchai nahi dikhti..A good antagonist is someone who helps in character development. As Advay is a dark character, I would like to see some humanly traits in hin. An antagonist has to be there to justify Advay's actions.

Hi! Interesting topic!
I agree with your points, an antagonist is there to progress the story, not drag it. In the end, the story should be mainly based on the protagonists. Shyam was a great example of a good antagonist. Man did the writers do a good job to make me despise him. He did though, progress the story in a way which brought the leads closer and not apart.
So here's hoping IPK3 has antagonists (no matter if it's the mil or maasi) which make us hate their very guts, but still move the story along and not overshadow the leads.
That would be perfect!

Nice topic😛. I think for the first half of story Advay himself will be villain. So what we are talking must be the force driving Advay to do all the deeds he is up to.

I loved Deeps point about Dhuryodhan. He might have always been shown as evil but in actual story he was meant to be much more than that. His friendship and trust in Karna, love for his brothers were unquestionable (although new SP MB spoiled it 😡). Same with Ravan in some way. He was a great musician and lord shiva devote. And his ppl were happy under him but its certain aspects of his nature that lead to his downfall.

For me a good villain is someone I can understand. An out and out evil character like a rapist or murderer is another category altogether. I am taking about that one person who drives the story forward. He/She has to have a strong character and must have some facets that are admirable. Someone who is driven by a reason for what they do. Greed/Jealousy/Lust... what ever it maybe...It shouldnt be childish action of just making the lead's life hell. A motive is what I want. And would love if the antagonist is also someone who we can like in a twisted way. Like a real anti-hero. Not like Advay who we all know will redeem but someone who is not gonna redeem ever but in some way we want him/her to change and have a happy ending but they keep frustrating us by staying bad.

And thats why I love Deeps point on Dhuryodhan, because even as a child, Shakuni manipulated him to hating the Pandevs. Using his greed for the throne against him. If Shakuni had not done that, Mahabharat would have been avoidable.

I agree with you point of a strong villain. They have a facet that makes them admirable is a great way to put it. I feel like this is why Dadi in IPK was really good. Dadi was only horrible and manipulative when it concerned Khushi or her family. But during Anjali's miscarriage, Dadi was actually in tears for Anjali despite being an accomplice of Snakewa. Dadi and Khushi were taking care of Anjali together in the hospital at one point. People forget that very easily though. Thats probably why I always hoped that she would turn good one day and redeem herself and move on. Too bad though.

Hi, I'm guilty of being a fan of Snakewa. I love his as a villain. Shyam was just too good. Shyam was so scary despite wearing the face of a friend. Whenever I look back at the older episodes, I remember the episode when Shyam singlehandedly manipulated BOTH Arnav and Nani. How easily he pacifies them. To me, that was really frightening because Shyam's two-faced nature is front and center. He manipulated two arrogant figures to do his bidding. I found myself asking, is this the same man that laughed after he killed his unborn child, while hugging his wife? Because Shyam looked so human as we saw him interacting with Shantivan, and thats what frightened me. Abbhas Mehta did a great job playing Shyam, kudos.

^^ The actor was awesome , no two opinions on that. But the script given to him was terrible at times ... Scorpions and perfumes 😛

A proper antagonist is one who is really clever , progresses the story and has a reason for his actions
He will make the leads strong and fight ; the leads can come close for the villain and finally defeat him
But in most shows now the villain or the vamp has a silly or petty motive and do silly actions
Agree fully with the Duryodhan analogy ; a villain can have some good points too
In real life no one is fully black or fully white or rather mostly have both good and bad sides
Shows also should maintain that then only full justice will be done to the story
we need an antagonist that brings out the strength of our leads and bring them closer to each other

It might be too much to ask, but here's to hoping for a great villain or vamp for IPK3.
