||CHAPTER-18||
Shivaay's disbelieving gaze never left Om's as his lips trembled with every word he spew before closing into a stiff line. The silence between them was brief before Shivaay pulled his grieving brother into an encasing hug. Beside him, Anika sniffed daintily, her delicate eyes swimming in pools of sorrow as she placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
Shivaay took in a shuddering breath before threading his hands through Om's lush hair. Truthfully, Shivaay didn't understand why he had failed to decipher the pieces till now.
Though he never knew this part of the story, he still remembered the day as clear as crystal when he came home to see his Rudra doodling on a paper with his Bade Pa supervising him.
His Bade Maa would still laugh every time she recalled the day where Shivaay had tackled Tej to the floor calling him an imposter and demanding where the real Tej Singh Oberoi was.
His reasoning had been quite simple; Tej had never spent time with Rudra before, least of all teaching his son the difference between a sketch and a crayon, so the family couldn't blame Shivaay for thinking otherwise.
He had been so embarrassed over the incident that he had failed to notice Om's moodiness and his frequent absence in the mansion. But unlike Om, he wasn't going to believe the strange man's words.
He had been following the business from quite a young age and he had never heard of an Oberoi named Vishal; nor had he seen the man as per Om's description.
Shivaay decided that he needed answers and if anyone could shed some light in this dilemma, it was definitely one of his seniors. But would asking Bade Papa or Maa help?
Shivaay pondered; he could always ask his dad but Shakti's words were always enigmatic that Shivaay would need a decipher himself. And he didn't want to pull Dadi into the mess which meant he was left with only one person.
Shivaay sighed dejectedly. Why couldn't anything ever go smoothly in his life? "Anika..." he softly called out. When he heard her hum in attention, he mustered his mind, "Where is Pinky Singh Oberoi?"
He barely managed to ignore Om stiffen in his arms and Anika's breath hitch before he heard someone knock softly on the door and clear their throat. He turned around to note Bhavya standing by the door, her eyes looking anywhere but them.
"What is it Bhavya?"
Bhavya looked uncomfortable before she raised her head to look him in the eye. "I was about to ask you what to do with P-Pinky umm...Pinky A-aunty..." Anika threw her a sympathetic smile. The poor girl looked on the verge of bolting out of the room.
"Where is she?" Shivaay asked briskly and the unintentional bite in his voice made Om flinch and pull away.
"Umm, she..." Anika blinked curiously as Bhavya slowly began to inch away from the door. And before Shivaay could question her, she mumbled something fast before she broke into a sprint down the hall as if the hounds of hell were after her.
Any other day, Anika would have laughed her bejesus off, but she could only cower in fear when Shivaay sent the nearest flower vase crashing to the floor before he took off towards the west wing of the mansion.
"I'll clean up this mess and catch up..." Anika nodded at Om as he realized where Shivaay was headed to. As much as she wanted to know, she felt that the brothers deserved the privacy.
She watched Om leave the room towards Rudra's sanctuary and smirked to herself. She decided that she would bother Shivaay about it later for Rudra was just as hers' as he was Shivaay's.
"Bhaujaai..." Anika turned towards the door where Gauri was peering at her through meek eyes.
"I just saw Bade Bhaiya literally break down the door to Rudy Bhaiya's room" she glanced around nervously as she added, "Should we be concerned?"
"It's alright Gauri, Om's with him..." she trailed of and frowned when the distant sound of a vase shattering echoed down the hall. Gauri flinched and looked at her warily before heading towards Rudra's room.
"You owe us at least this explanation after the mess you have put us through!" She heard Shivaay's voice blare through the door. Maybe she should stop here and take a peep?
If it wasn't for the fate that had befallen her Rudy Bhaiya, Gauri would have felt bad for the lady sitting hunched on the bed before her husband and her son. Pinky was barely half the vibrant and glorious lady she used to be.
Her hair was everywhere and her cloths were ruffled and messy. Steaks of kajal ran down her face from her red rimmed and puffed eyes. But that didn't seem to face her son who looked down at her like a constable questioning a thief.
"Shivaay, what does that have to do with anything?" She heard Shakti Uncle question him. If Gauri had mistaken, she swore she saw uncertainty and trepidation flash in his eyes. What was going on?
"Please Chote Papa..." Om requested firmly but smoothly, "Don't stop Shivaay. This is important."
"Well, Pinky Singh Oberoi..." Shivaay bit out harshly, ignoring the flinch of her fragile shoulders. "Who is Vishal Singh Oberoi and what does he have to do with the Kalyani mills fire?"
This time, Gauri clearly caught the shock in her father-in-law's eyes and the brief glance he shared with his wife. "I-I have no idea what you are talk--"
"Don't. Lie. To me!" Shivaay gritted out.
"Shivaay..." Shakti started out patiently, "Shouldn't we be looking out for Rudra? This conversation has nothing to do--"
"Vishal has kidnapped Rudy". Shivaay lied through his teeth.
"What?!" Shakti exclaimed in shock and rage. "He wouldn't dare! He's crazy!!"
Shivaay observed him with his poker face while Om marvelled his smooth lie. Bade Papa had clearly fell for the bait. Om struggled to hide his smirk.
"Judging from your reaction Papa, I think I must have jolt your memory". Shivaay drawled.
Shakti took a moment to hide his deer-caught-in-a-headlight look before he sighed tiredly and sat beside his wife who stared daggers at him. "It's a long story, Shivaay."
"Well, I've got all the time in the world since you finally managed to get rid of Rudra from me". Shivaay mercilessly spat at his mother with a fake, pleasant smile.
"Shivaay..." Pinky started in a resigned tone. "Vishal is your dad's cousin who sired an illegitimate son before he ensnared the heart of Kalavathy Thakur, the sister of Kali Thakur".
Gauri abruptly decided she had heard enough. Kali Thakur? Where they talking about the same savage who had destroyed her life and her reputation? The very thought shuddered her.
Pinky stopped when she noticed Shivaay's and Om's horror-stricken faces. She had barely begun and they already looked like they had enough. She cleared her throat before continuing when she felt Shivaay's eyes on her.
"Kali Thakur, back in those days was the don of Bareilly and a..." Pinky scrounged her memory to come up with a good word to describe the man. She resigned and stuck up with the word demon though it did nothing to describe the scoundrel of a man that was Kali Thakur.
"To find that he had eloped with his sister and got her pregnant didn't sit well with the Oberoi." Pinky still remembered the day like it was just yesterday. She had never seen her Shakti-ji so violent and angry.
"To say the least, we didn't welcome him with a veneration plate". Shakti continued from where Pinky had stopped. Who was he kidding? They had forcefully kicked him and his pregnant wife out of the house.
"He had taken up residence in the Kalyani Mills until the fateful day..." Shakti finished with finality. It was half true, though.
Shivaay, on the other hand, carefully ran their words through his head. He was sure as heck they had hid the major part of it from him. But, then again...
"Alright". Shivaay conceded narrowing his eyes at the look of relief shadowed across his parents' face. "So you mean to say that your cousin's holding a grudge against you? Which is why he's kidnapped Rudy' Am I right?"
"Y-yes, Shivaay". Shakti nodded without a beat. He could only pray that Shivaay stopped his incessant questioning.
"You also told me that he had an illegitimate son before his wife got pregnant, right?" Shivaay carefully drawled out making sure to have his parents hooked to every word. The thought of his family being cruel enough to refuse shelter to a pregnant lady was disturbing enough but that was a tale for a different day.
"So where was Dadi in all this?" He narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the two.
"Maa had taken your Bade Maa to the temple since she had complications pertaining to being pregnant with Rudra". Pinky replied confidently. Shivaay almost grinned like a Cheshire cat. Sometimes, his mom's naivety made it too easy!
"So, is it safe for me to assume that Vishal's second child was born around the same time as Rudra?" When Pinky nodded with a non-committal shrug and Shakti stared at her in disbelief, Shivaay did grin. Gotcha!
"Did the second child by any chance go by the name..." Shivaay caught both their gaze before he softly whispered. "...Agastya Singh Oberoi?"
The realization dawning in their eyes and the terror that followed was instantaneous. Shivaay gritted his teeth against the rage that consumed him. So the man's words did hold some truth.
"We are not sure, Shivaay..." Shakti tried, his gaze fixed at the carpet. "But he was really fond of the name Agastya."
"Yes, Shivaay". Pinky immediately followed. "Rudra and Agastya had nothing in common except their OB-GYN" she trailed off as Shakti gave her a harsh hiss.
Shivaay raised his eyebrows. "And Rudra's OB-GYN was...?"

"Anika Chabra." Svetlana looked pointedly at Abhay who had held on to each and every word of her tale. "Anika Chabra was a world renowned OB-GYN, a rare gift among her peers." She crowed proudly about her mentor.
"People took great pleasure in being associated with her name. She was kind and generous..." She drawled on, her voice overflowing with sadness and regret.
She was one person Svetlana was forever in debt to. Anika Chabra had laid her eyes on her in a local science exhibition.
She had instantly spotted the talent and her shrewd brain while the other kids in the orphanage had called her a freak. She had taken in both her and her best friend Veer under her wing and supported them through their career.
To Svetlana, she had been the only person who had shown her what it felt like to be loved and cared for. Unlike Veer who took off during the weekends to live with his mother, Anika shared her roof with her and her two adorable daughters, Charu and Chutki.
They were a family.
"Was...?" Abhay questioned, breaking her trail of thoughts.
"Yes". Svetlana gripped bitterly. "She is no more."
"I-I'm sorr--"
"I don't need your pity!" Svetlana bit out.
"Anyway..." Svetlana continued against the anger growing within her. "She aided people around the world regardless of their status. She, along with her estranged and selfish, money worshipping husband Barat, were a legend..." her voice trailed off into a whisper. "...before she volunteered to be the Oberoi's personal OB-GYN."
A thick silence fell between them, the only sound being Abhay's nervous scuffle of his boots.
"Umm, I am sorry to impose but what does the Oberoi have to--"
"They murdered her". She cut him off ignoring his sharp gasp.
"W-why?"
Svetlana bit her lips to hid her smirk. She had worked too hard for this moment. The day has come for her vengeance to bloom.
"Because she was a witness to them switching Jhanvi's dead baby with your baby brother."
The scrapping of the metal chair and its harsh thud against the floor did not go unnoticed by Svetlana.
"You are lying..." came the vulnerable voice of the boy who she clearly knew was an Oberoi.
"Isn't that what you saw in the tape?" She questioned him mockingly. "Your father running into the mills with a lady and a wailing infant in his hands?"
Yes, he had indeed seen that, Abhay conceded. But never in a million years did he think his baby brother would be...
He gasped, his eyes widening to the size of saucers when realisation slowly dawned on him. "Rudra..." he whispered breathlessly, almost sacredly.
Svetlana smirked as she observed Abhay rush outside, no doubt towards Rudra's room without waiting for her reply. Her revenge was almost within her reach and she'd make sure the Oberoi learned their lesson this time around.
