||CHAPTER-19||

"When will he wake up?"

Veer paused in his ministration to glance at the stiff form by the door before he shrugged and resumed his duties. Frankly, he never expected Rudra to suddenly wake up and bolt outside the house, least of all to jump in front of Shivaay Singh Oberoi's car.

It had been a close call.

Everything the young Oberoi did, from subconsciously snuggling onto strangers to shattering Svetlana's legendary temper with just a single word, was out of the world. He was as unpredictable as Svetlana herself was and Veer frankly didn't wanna know the kind of mischief the boy could get to when he was awake.

"I asked you a question."

Veer supressed the urge to snort at the man's demanding tone. He had introduced himself as Abhay Thakur to them, but God...who was the kid trying to fool? Every fibre of him, from his stance to his arrogance and attitude, screamed Oberoi.

"Frankly, I don't know". Veer replied honestly while pulled out a syringe and a clear fluid from his bag. "I'm surprised he had the strength to scream and run like that, what with his broken ribs and all."

Abhay nodded his head in consent. In the beginning, a part of him felt wary of indulging himself with the wicked lady's plans for the tapes but now that he knew of the youngest Oberoi's lineage...

He stared at the prone form cuddling with a fluffy pillow. He couldn't help the smile that tugged at his lips and the sense of serendipity that settled in his heart.

His baby brother...After all this time, his baby brother had been alive and well under the guise of Shivaay Singh Oberoi's cousin. He gritted his teeth and forced himself to take deep breaths to calm his suddenly raging temper.

The Oberoi's had accused his dad and had him disowned, had forced his parents to live outside their empire's walls, had given them no solace after his mother's death. And now, they had taken his brother away and made him their own.

He took slow, deliberate steps towards the bed. He would take a DNA test first, Abhay decided as he pondered on.

And if Rudra Singh Oberoi was truly his own, then he'd make sure never to leave his side. And if the DNA report came negative and Svetlana's words proved false, then...

Abhay narrowed his eyes, a hint of madness entering them; he would force the boy to be his no matter what it takes! He would give those Oberoi's a taste of their own medicine.

"Why is Svetlana holding him hostage?" Veer sighed at his incessant questioning. Hell if he knows! It's not like Svetlana drew him a military strategy before pulling him in the middle of the night! And what was with the man's interrogation? Didn't Svetlana already give him the tapes he was after?

"Do you really think Svetlana would spew her intentions around like you did?" This time, he did snort when Abhay blushed at his audacity.

"I know it's definitely not to dig information, I mean..." Veer continued with a smile as he dabbed the alcohol soaked cotton against Rudra's skin, "Do you really thing he is going to answer anything through his muddled brain?"

"What?!" Abhay hissed low in his throat; his voice ladled with worry and fear.

Veer gave him a funny look. He had expected surprise but not worry in Abhay's voice. It had been hilarious when they had met. Abhay had introduced himself as the Oberoi's enemy and seemed to permute glee at their downfall.

But now, he looked and sounded as if any discomfort to the slumbering Oberoi caused him immense pain. Talk about switching sides!

Veer cleared his throat at the awkward silence. "I did tell you that he has amnesia due to psychological trauma which is why he ran off in frenzy a few hours before..."

"H-He doesn't remember anything?" Abhay whispered hopefully.

Veer rolled his eyes in exasperation. These Oberoi's were such drama queens. What part of amnesia' didn't that idiot understand? "Partially at least..." he replied stiffly.

"Is he going to be alright?"

Was that concern in his voice? Veer scrutinized Abhay as he shuffled inside to stand by the side of Rudra's bed. Did Svetlana have something to do with Abhay's sudden protectiveness?

"If you meant, 'is he gonna live?', then yes..." Veer answered, distracting himself from the dark thoughts clouding his head.

While he assured himself that the boy was definitely going to live through his recent fall he was in no way ready to guarantee his survival at Svetlana's hands. He had, after all, seen her inject a slow poison into his system. He had seen that drug in action and it was only a matter of time before the boy succumbed to some major organ failure...

So absorbed had he been in his thoughts of the drug that he subconsciously grabbed Rudra's arm and without checking his momentum stuck the sharp needle into his tender skin in one go.

Rudra, who had been sleeping on his side, yelped in surprise, his eyes snapping open with a wince. Veer hissed at his own clumsiness as he tried to lodge the needle out of Rudra's arm without the boy noticing.

Though the needle had been thin, the force he had employed had been strong enough to bring the boy to a rude awakening. He gave him a tight-lipped smile as a pair of teary, chocolate brown eyes turned around to face him.

"B-Bhaiya..." Rudra hiccupped, tears involuntarily leaking from the corners of his eyes. He looked absolutely confused and lost that it pulled at Veer's heartstrings.

"I'm so sorry, kiddo..." Veer raised his arms in a universal sign of surrender. "I didn't mean to hurt you." Before he could try and calm the kid more, he was rudely shoved to the side by Abhay who took a seat beside Rudra and immediately scooped the sniffing lad into his arms.

"Shhh, calm down now..." Abhay cooed as Rudra continued to whimper wordlessly in his arms. "It's okay; everything's going to alright..." He dutifully shielded him from the gaping Veer.

"Bhaiya..." Rudra whined between hitched breaths. Not only had he been disturbed from his peaceful slumber, he felt distorted and puzzled. The soft voice crooning in his ears managed to calm him down but where was he and why did his body hurt so much?!

He finally pulled away from those strong arms holding him and took the time to observe him. Hesitant but relieved brown eyes regarded him with adoration. Was that his Bhaiya? He didn't know why that single word constantly stuck to his mouth like a prayer.

"Are you my Bhaiya?" Rudra let the question slip. Why did it bother him so much to know his Bhaiya before his own name?

All he knew was that he needed his Bhaiya more than he needed food or oxygen! He needed his Bhaiya more than life itself!

He saw the man's eyes go wide in surprise before it looked into his own with pleasure. "Yes." The man nodded before pulling him back into his warm embrace. "I'm glad you remember me..." his Bhaiya crooned, running a hand through his hair.

He pulled him back only to place a kiss atop his head. "I'm your Bhaiya, Abhay and you are my Chote Bhai..." he felt the man hesitate before tightening his hold around him, "...Agastya. You are my beloved brother, Agastya."

"Agastya?" Rudra murmured, testing the name in his mouth. So he was Agastya and his brother was Abhay? He shrugged before snuggling back into his brother's arms. Frankly, he felt lost and disgruntled. But then again, he smiled into Abhay's chest, he decided to question about it later.

His brother's arms felt warm and safe so Rudra decided to take a nap before he demanded his answers. His instant need for his Bhaiya was answered and for now all was well in his world.

"Bhaujaai!"

Anika almost dropped the baby album she was surfing through at Gauri's shrill and urgent call. She whipped around and practically rushed towards Gauri as she crashed against the doorframe to Shivaay's room in her haste to get to Anika.

"Gauri?" Anika held the trembling girl by her shoulders. "Gauri, breath..." she stretched patiently as Gauri struggled to talk and catch her breath at the same time.

"Bh-Bhaujaai..." Gauri choked, frantically pointing towards Rudra's room. "Shivaay Bhaiya, h-he..."

Without another word, Anika practically sprinted down the corridor towards Rudra's room, her heart hammering against her ribs as different dreadful possibilities ran through her head. Was Shivaay alright? Did he hurt Pinky Aunty? Had it been a mistake to let him and Om on their own?

The loud commotion that seemed to near hear only frightened her more. Her whole family was crowding in front of Rudra's room as she pulled herself into a hasty halt.

"Shivaay!" She called out through the crowd. "What's going on, Shiv--".Words failed her at the spectacle before her.

Shivaay had his back towards her, staring with stone cold determination outside the window as the cops dragged one struggling and weeping Pinky Singh Oberoi with them.

They were arresting Pinky Aunty. The words seem to not register in her head and so she told herself that they were indeed arresting Pinky Aunty and Shivaay did nothing to stop it...

Anika was at them in a millisecond, adrenaline pumping through her veins as she screamed a war cry and shoved them aside and pulled Pinky into her arms. "Stay away from her!" she sneered at the cops who were twice her size.

"Shivaay!" she called out to Shivaay who seemed to be on a world of his own. "Sh-Shivaay! Tell them to stop!" she roughly pushed another cop out of the way whom she belatedly realized was Bhavya.

Ignoring the hurt that flashed on her face, Anika shrilled at the cops and pulled out her dear Chameli for defence. The cops seemed to cover in fear. "How dare you lay your hands on her?!"

She swooped around to glare at Bhavya. "Forget them, at least you should know better". Anika sniffed in disdain. "She's Shivaay's mom. How could you just--"

"STOP IT!" Shivaay roared gesturing them with his raised hand. Silence instantly swept about the room.

"Sh-Shivaay". Anika carefully approached him. "Shivaay they are taking her away. Why aren't you stopping them?"

"It's because Shivaay ordered the arrest warrant." Om mumbled from the side, his eyes refusing to meet hers'.

Anika just stared, her brain refusing to process the words she had just heard. Her Shivaay would never do that! "Is this true, Shivaay?" she questioned him, her voice no louder than a whisper.

When he refused to face her she let out a frustrated grunt and pulled him around by his shoulders ready to beg him if she must. "Please answer me, Shivaay!" she cried out in frustration.

Words failed her when her eyes met Shivaay's. She could see in them the agony, the betrayal and the strength it took him to enforce those words against his mother. "S-She is no longer my mother". His lips quivered as he regarded her with angry, tear-filled eyes.

Anika bit down on her lips to keep her own tears in bay. She carefully reached out to take Shivaay's face in her hands. "Please, Shivaay, listen to me..."

"No!" he barked and tried to pull away. "She is a murderer!"

"Shivaay..."

"SHE DESTROYED MY RUDRA!" He screamed right on her face, his voice so high it came out as a squeak at the end. "I will never take her in!" His eyes looked like that of a madman and Anika knew from that stance that no words would budge him.

"Shivaay, please..." Anika tried once again. "If not for yourself, please for Rudra!"

"R-Rudr..." Shivaay stuttered his eyes a thousand miles away.

"Do you remember, Shivaay?" Anika screamed, clutching onto his lapels, "Do you remember how Rudra fought tooth and nail for his Chote Maa that day?!"

FLASH!

"I know my Chote Maa."

"I am not talking to my Chote Maa. I am talking to Pinky Singh Oberoi! So, why don't you die and give me back my Chote Maa!"

"You said that Shivaay Bhaiya will always love me; that O will always love me."

"You promised me that you will always love me, Chote Maa."

"You don't have to feel insecure. Anika Bhabhi is Anika Bhabhi and Chote Maa is Chote Maa and I-"

"-will always love you."

FLASH!

"I-I remember..." Shivaay stuttered, sliding down on his knees bringing Anika down with him.

"Do you really think he would approve?" Anika desperately clung to Rudra's name as a last resort. "Do you think he'd be happy with his Bhaiya hurting his Chote Maa?! Do you?!"

And Shivaay slowly turned to regard her and then the sobbing Pinky Singh Oberoi before slowly gesturing the police away.

"For R-Rudr..." he muttered weakly as he crumbled to the floor, his dead weight against Anika. "For my Rudra..."
