Chapter One: The Worst Interview
******************************************************************
Chaturvedi House - 8:03 am
It was morning. Annika ran around the house. The girl stuffed things in her bag with one hand as she held a toast in the other. "Oh my god, oh my god," Annika was stressed. Being late for an interview. How could this have happened? The new girl is late to her interview? Imagine her coming to work every day, yikes. The first impression was important. "Ishu, I hate you so much!" In truth, she didn't hate her but someone had to take the blame, huh?
"Hate me? What did I do?!" Ishana responded, aghast at her sister's own accusation. Ishana pretended to sound hurt as she sat on chair at the dinner table holding onto her morning tea, watching her sister frantically get ready, not helping her at all apparently.
"You could have woken me up earlier!" Annika sat down beside Ishana, and starting eating promptly. Luckily, the food had been laid out before her. Who knows what would have happened if it wasn't.
"You wake yourself up all the time, I figured while I was helping Sahil, you'd wake yourself up. Maybe next time go to sleep earlier."
"Oh yeah, you tell that to your boyfri-"
Filled with panic, Ishana covered Annika's mouth, as quickly as 'boy' slipped out of Annika's mouth. "Shhh, are you trying to get me killed? If Bua hears you, she will kill me, but before that I'll kill you."
"Fine, fine" Annika got up, she left her breakfast half eaten. Quickly wiping her mouth, Annika grabbed her bag and proceed to run out the door as fast as she possibly could.
"Di, your recommendation latter!" Ishana called out, running towards Annika, handing it to her.
"Don't lose it and best of luck!"
"Thank you!" Annika hugged Ishana before she ran out the door.
"Crazy..." Ishana laughed as she shook her head, watching Annika leave. Ishana hoped for the best for her sister. Ishana smiled worriedly. "Why do I get the feeling this girl is going to get herself in trouble..." Ishana sat back down and began sipping her chai as she prayed for her sister's safety mentally.
Outside Oberoi Industries HQ - 9:28 am
"Oh god, hurry!!!" Annika ran towards the Oberoi Industries Headquarters. It was pretty tall building, atleast to Annika it was. Annika had to admit, it was certainly larger than the last place she worked at. Her interview was supposed to start at 9:30 am, and she was supposed to be there five minutes earlier. So much for first impressions... As Annika made her way to the entrance, she bumped into someone. Annika tripped back, falling over.
"Can you watch where you're going!" Annika shouted as she got up and brushed herself off. Annika grabbed her bag, things had fallen out. What a duffer, she left her own bag open. Annika quickly put things back into her bag.
"Sorry, are you okay?" the man who rudely bumped into her asked innocently. Annika stared the man up and down. Who was this body builder? Talk about a zor ka jhatka. Not even Kaalu kicks as hard as this man bumped into me. What an item.
"Yeah, sorry, move." Annika didn't have time for this. She was getting late. She could deal with the wrestler man another time. Annika opened the door and walked through.
"Wait, ma'am, your-" the man called out to her but Annika didn't turn around, she had to get going.
Oberoi Industries HQ - 9:29 am
Annika looked around the building as she walked through a hall. The place was spot clean. Annika hurried to the other door. Opening it, she found herself in the office area. People were walking around, working, chatting, and it was strange. The atmosphere was calmly distressed. Nobody was going insane, but it was clear, these guys were tensed. Annika began worrying. "No worries, Annika. You can do this. Think about the rent. You can do this, Annika." Annika muttered, trying to reassure herself. Annika walked up to the front desk to speak to the lady over the counter.
And thus began the first nautanki of the day. Before Annika could even speak, the woman over the counter gasped like she saw a ghost, she covered her mouth exasperatedly. The woman eyed Annika up and down, with her judgmental eyes, she scanned Annika. Annika stared oddly at the woman before looking down at her own clothes. Was this woman looking at her clothes? Why? It was such a nice outfit for a first day. (First episode outfit) What's her problem?
"What do you want?" The lady over the counter shouted, rather rudely at that. Talk about attitude. Annika rolled her eyes.
"I have an appointment for an interview for a job here. Hold on." Annika tried hard not to be rude back, she spoke formally. Annika pulled over her bag; she started searching for her appointment letter. The woman over the counter gasped offensively once more, Annika rolled her eyes again, sighing heavily. She prayed to God to give her strength.
Annika searched through her bag for the appointment letter, all she had was the recommendation letter she got from a friend. "Where is it?" Annika muttered to herself as she searched through the mess of her bag, cursing herself for never organizing it properly. Ishu was right; her bag is like a void. Things go in, nothing comes out.
"What? Did you forget the appointment letter?" The lady over counter asked her rudely. Annika looked up at her worriedly.
"Just give me sec here." Annika continued to search. At that moment, another voice came.
"Simran, there you are! You won't believe it, Tia is-" The new woman looked at Annika, their eyes met. And just like the lady over the counter, this woman scanned Annika up and down. And thus began the second nautanki of the day. Annika sighed mentally.
"Who's this?" The woman asked Simran, who just seemed done with it.
"Don't even ask, Pamela. Who knows where she came from? She lost her appointment letter." Simran responded, speaking as if Annika commit the ultimate sin.
"Forget her, Tia is-"
"GET OUT!" Before Pamela could finish her sentence, another voice shouted. The sound was almost a deafening shriek. It felt someone scratched a chalkboard.
A woman clad in high heel and a short dress walked into the scene. The woman was furious, and still, she walked her own style. A man followed behind her with pleading. "Ma'am, please."
"I said get out! This is you third mistake today. Before you cause more problems, leave." The woman yelled, pointing towards the door.
"But Tia ma'am, there is so much work left to be done." The man pleaded to the angered woman.
"That's my problem, not yours." The woman continued to point toward the door. The man looked down and left promptly. Annika saw him leave, she frowned in pity. What a weird place. What sort of hell is this?
Annika composed herself, she turned to Simran. "Listen," As Annika spoke, Simran shockingly turned to her. "I lost the appointment letter, I do have the recommendation letter. If you'd just call someone so I can show them the letter, maybe I can still get the interview."
"Who's this?" Tia asked Simran and Pamela aloud. Tia had her eyebrow raised.
"She came here for an interview, but she lost her appointment letter. And now she's showing us some recommendation letter..." Simran explained briefly. Simran's attitude went to a down low in Tia's presence.
Tia glanced at Simran for a moment only to turn her attention back to Annika. Tia extended her hand forward. "Pass it." This woman seemed serious. From what Annika could see, Tia had alot of authority. Annika reluctantly took out the letter from her bag. Annika walked up to Tia and gave the letter in her hand.
Tia promptly opened the letter. Tia began reading it. Tia's eyes widen shock, much to Simran and Pamela's worry. The stylish woman glanced back up at Annika and then looked at the letter again.
"Is this real...?" Tia muttered.
"Huh?" Annika was confused, as she was equally nervous by the question. What does that mean?
"The person that gave this to you, what do they look like?" Tia question Annika, looking her straight in the eye unflinchingly.
Annika paused for a moment, looking down, trying to recall the bare detail of the face. "He had nice long hair, and a light beard. He was soft spoken and had nice clothes." Annika explained as best as she could about the man who gave her the letter. "He said his name is-"
"It's fine. I know." Tia cut in-between. "Alright, Simran, schedule another appointment for the interview now. I need a new assistant anyways... She's hired." Tia looked at Annika, handing her the letter back. Tia then ordered Simran, before walking off to her cabin.
Pamela and Simran looked at Annika shocked. They had not processed what just happened. Annika was almost the same. "Did I just get the job?" Annika asked aloud, making sure she heard Tia correctly. Much to Annika's dismay, SimPam had not responded that quickly.
"Is she serious, this girl is going to work here?!" Simran looked at Pamela, mortified.
"I hope Tia knew what she was doing. Did Tia even see her properly, what is this new girl wearing. It looks like she just came out of last season." Pamela responded.
"Last season? More like last decade."
"That's probably more accurate."
"Are you done?" Annika interrupted the nautankis as she stared at them with a bored look on her face. Annika wanted to pound her head against the wall. "Can we start scheduling now?"
"No, we will interview you now." Simran raised her hand to stop Annika. Annika became a bit nervous. An interview, here at the reception desk? Right now?
"What's your name?" Pamela started.
"Annika Chaturvedi." Annika responded.
"Do have anything in pink?" Simran asked.
"Yes."
"Lose it then."
"Have you ever gotten a facial done?" Pamela asked this time, before Annika could answer, Simran started and once she started, both Simran and Pamela started firing question after question before Annika could answer.
"Or maybe actually gone to the store to by your clothes."
"Ever try waxing?"
"Or a mani-pedi"
"No, but seriously, where did you get that outfit?"
"And where did you get that letter from?"
"And why did Tia get so shocked when she read it?"
"Enough!" Annika interrupted the nautanki duo. Annika was irritated. It's bad enough none of this is making sense but these dolls are now going to play 20 questions with her. Annika looked straight at both at Simran and Pamela. They could see her irritation.
