Shivaay's eyes blurred for a few moments as he heard this heartfelt whispered prayer that was not a prayer.

'This is the City Hospital, a child named Sahil has had a serious accident. It would be best if you could come as he requires a surgery'.
Shivaay felt his heart contract. Eyes wide to hide his tears, he reassured he'd be there right away. Anika, who was expecting he'd approach her to say something at least, did not expect him to literally rush away with this bright spark in his eyes.
She ignored it and focused on all the things she needed to cook.
Mindlessly, she sent up a prayer for Sahil's safety.
Shivaay cancelled his schedule for the next three days and rushed to the hospital where he was asked to sign a form. Apparently, Sahil had gotten into an argument with a bully who had pushed him down two flights of stairs and beaten him senseless besides.
He screamed at the doctor to do what they could, since Sahil already had a condition, there was no time to be wasted.
He called Om
'Om, Om!'
'Shivaay, what happened? I have never heard you this flustered, kya hua? Accha sun, what do you think Sahil would prefer? Ironman, the Hulk, or Batman?'
'OM! Shut up and listen! Sahil is in the hospital! DO NOT TELL ANIKA. I need you and Rudra here right now!'
Anika did not realize how and when she reached the hospital. She was simply cooking one moment, and the cake was complete, and the next, Shivaay had calmly asked her to come to the hospital.
So she did.
Bad feelings aside, she did not expect to find Shivaay in creased clothes, along with a heart-wrenching frown and streaks of salt across his fair face.
Barely missing a beat, she asked him what the matter was.
'Sahil'
That one word, that one word was enough to destroy her world.
As she collapsed, Shivaay held her up and to him. They knelt down against a wall while she just dry-wept against his chest; he would NOT let her go. Breathing was not important but she was. All he could do, all he felt, he put it out when he held her as she cried for an almost broken childhood.
'Shhh, he'll be okay. He has the best medical facilities this world can afford. I made sure of it. I promise you, he will be okay'
It was perhaps after one such countless statement that Anika finally lifted her head from his wet shirt-chest
'Are you sure he will be okay?'
Shivaay smiled and wiped a tear from one of her eye (over the years he forgot which one)
'Of course. I am Shivaay Singh Oberoi. Sahil is my buddy'
A few hours later they all shuffled into Sahil's room silently, and decorated it as best as they could. Rudy and Soumya went to collect the goodies from home. Pinky, Jhanvi, and Dadi got the food packed, while Prinku and Om got the cake and the presents.
Anika and Shivaay refused to move till Sahil gained consciousness and was pronounced safe.
'Sahil, buddy. Tumne agli baar tumhari didi aur mujhe daraya toh main tumhe khud maarunga'
An emotional Shivaay tried to be stern but ended up ruffling Sahil's hair, whispering a Happy Birthday against his ear while he wiped Sahil's tears.
'didi?'
'BAAT mat kar tu mujhse! baat mat...'
She could not even repeat her sentence as she almost leapt into Sahil's waiting arms, encompassed by Shivaay, who felt he had the world now that these two were smiling and safe again.
Sahil would always remember his ninth birthday, because the biggest gift he received was a family, was because her didi had the love she had always deserved in her life.
He was a happy brother, and perhaps, with Billu ji's knowledge and experience, he'd be able to impress Soumya into falling in love with him.
