IKRS 26th October 2015 ep 67 My Take
"Frailty thy name is woman.." thus, Hamlet the prince of Denmark alluded to his mother Gertrude as being, weak, feeble.. however, This episode is a celebration of the role of womanhood. Being a female.Discrimination against a widow is seen as yet another unworthy excuse to malign the role of a woman. The episode with the stronghold of faith, challenges the devaluation of this gender who along with the male carry's, nurtures and brings up his seed.. woman, female a carrier of human creation..
Viplav sets up on his own. announcement sounds, dance to happen in half n'hour. The girl and her dad seen by Viplav. Her father tells her listen to him carefully ,before he leaves her here again. The girl looks upset. Viplav goes to girl but dada ji turns up to meet Viplav. Both embrace warmly. Viplav looks for the girl she vanished. Then leads him to shop.
At the Ashram Raj laxmi washes clothes as if she washes and rubs away her dreams out of her soul. Dulari finds her lax at the job .. reminds her to apply herself to the washing at hand...forget about the obsession of dance and song.. so Dulari still thinks the same despite Viplav's references to faith. Dulari taunts , god wouldn't have sent you into this Ashram if you were meant to dance and sing. Try to focus on duty and faith too , as it is if something goes wary ,that vikal babu won't come to redeem you! hope you got that? and she goes. The tinkle of brass bells heralds the arrival of Badi amma.. she holds the bell anklets in her hand ..she draws Raj laxmi 's attention.. these ghungroos that were hurled away by Dulari as a reminder of a brothel ,now held in the hands of the head of the Ashram.. get up ,here.. there's a couple of hours to the competition.. go quickly!..rajlaxmi couldn't believe her eyes ,really.. Dulari interrupts Inderani's decision. She can predict what handing over the ghungroos to Rajlaxmi meant.. confidently Inderani says, after much thought , she too agrees with Viplav, that their fear of the world has to be tackled with. The time is right! To realize that god didn't make us widows so that we stop living. He doesn't create us to steal our joys. But its society that has imposes such rules upon us. so we have to fight for our right to live as we wish, fight for issues that give us joy! We have to fight ,dulari .. What raj laxmi wants to do is not wrong. Through the medium of her dance ,she wants to worship durga maa..if we stop rajlaxmi today , then all her life she'll be sitting here in this very ashram, washing away these clothes unable to achieve anything beyond that.. She will not let that happen , because she for one doesn't wish to see anyone living in this ashram by supressing their desires,, sacrificing their dreams ,wishes and their sense of creativity.. So raj laxmi go live your life ,realize yourself! ,reach for that which you haven't been able to do till today! They.. Embrace happily. Dulari looks very miffed. Seems she now is on her own opposing this dance and song issue. What does dulari fear? The stigma of a widow dancing and singing? She has more to look forward to when inderani ,being the boss even allows Suvarna and Dhani to accompany rajlaxmi..This then is more of a test. Will her own daughter let her down? Dhani, wants to support rajlaxmi, but not at the expense of making her mother unhappy. Dhani knows how strongly against dulari is against the issue. Thus she makes it clear, she can only accompany rajlaxmi if her mother allows her too. Dulari, true to herself, obdurate ,till the end! stiffens and remains silent. Dhani honors her mother's wishes and abandons her peers.. But promises she will pray for their success.
One's intergrity is not for sale! Viplav proudly shows his effort to his dada and mother. his dada seems pleased ,but his mother who desires to see Viplav as great as his grandad, is clearly unimpressed by seeing him involved in a handicraft stall, selling cheap artefacts. Viplav explains, enthusiastically, why the shop looks empty ,he made a big sale the day before. dada praises his self -reliance and business efforts. In fact acknowledges that since he will not accept money from him.. He'll be more than pleased to buy stuff off him. As expected dada ji over pays viplav to test if he can still allure his grandson with the gleam of wealth. Viplav, on the other hand gets a chance to show his integrity. He needed the money, all the more since he had vowed to the women of the ashram that he would manage the store , and not return till he has sold everything! To make money for the women, was the major issue for him.. But not at the expense of compromising his integrity.. Viplav refuses all of dada ji's overpayment! And dashrant somewhat disappointed admits , his grandson has a lot of self respect. Pity kanak being his mother can see no strength of character in her son..
Rearing to go! the two widows leave for the competition. Raj laxmi calms Suvarna's nerves, by saying it's a once in lifetime opportunity and she is confident Durga maa will sure fill them with positivity and by her grace they will surely win. Tripurari watches them head for the mela. He signals the biker he uses to sabotage the widows plan at winning the prize money and becoming self sufficient. The biker attacks the two widows by ramming his bike through them . both widows are thrown aside, injured bady rajlaxmi twists her ankle which renders her incapable taking part in the competition. Tripurari is delighted with the outcome as the question of the widows entering and winning was snuffed out. One thing is confirmed Viplav babaa sticks out at the Ashram a little longer! apart from the contrived mishap ,what saddens me at Tripurari is his heartlessness he gets Suvarna injured too without batting an eyelid.. the guy is using her only for passing time.. along side using her services as a plant,a mole..
Injured in body but not in spirit..Rajlaxmi and Suvarna return and report their mishap. Dulari too is somewhat moved. Rajlaxmi is not deterred, instead she is infused with the attitude of "the show must go on! however.. Rajlaxmi too has undergone a change.. she appeals to Dhani to be her replacement..to fulfil her dream, win the much needed cash! besides she impresses fervently that Dhani has to prove that widows are not a sign of ill omen and badluck! Dhani has to win the competition and prove to society how untrue their stance is! Do it for Viplav's happiness and for all! Now Raj laxmi thinks of being seen as a "we" rather than an "I".. the antagonism she felt for Dhani before, now changes into friendliness! Since Dhani is the only one who is whole and well she is entrusted with the task of winning for all! ..Dulari too comes under the umbrella of the kindred spirit and softens to the idea to Dhani participating..
Hopes dashed ,near enough..The dance competition begins, Dashrant and the local magistrate sit as chief guests. Viplav waits disappointed . There is fat chance of his team arriving. He is approached by the organisers about his team . he reminds them , he told them to delete their names but they didn't pay heed to what he had said. But much to his joy the last dancer in the competition is mentioned andViplav is excited, hopeful and very curious..Tripurari is terribly puzzled who on earth could this dancer be ?he knew Benaras like the back of his hand, how come he didn't come across her?
Worship and praise through the medium of dance, and song ..the stage is set , the curtains pulled back and against the orange back ground.. The dark silhouette of a woman dances to the song that sings praises of goddess Durga, Amba, Gauri. Viplav is shocked to see Raj laxmi in the audience next to him..with a bandaged head.. You?? If you are here who is that? Raj laxmi replies calmly, Dhani and he says what??..he cannot contain his joy as he along with the rest of the crowd ,rejoices at Dhani 's dancing figure that personifies the figure of the goddess Durga.. Complete with her symbols in her ten quadrant arms.. In the finale scene the lights come on and Dhani is seen in the avatar of the goddess Durga in a red and white sari. The dance wins whole hearted applause! Viplav is ecstatic along with Raj laxmi ,Suvarna and Dulari.. Dhani goes off stage as the result is compiled ! Dhani is declared the winner!.. before the prize could be granted to her.. Tripurari comes out with his defensive fire to keep Viplav away from his home,to stay stuck in the Ashram.. Dhani is called on stage to be presented the prize, by the magistrate. Tripurari throws the match.. she's a widow in the semblance of Durga maa! no sooner he throws the match the audience ignites with hate ,bigotry against widows! and Viplav gets concerned as questions are raised at the winner standing on the stage being a widow. soon it becomes worse as one man instigates the others, brothers , she has made fun of our religious sentiments! in the guise of Durga mata this widow is made to don coloured clothes! made the widow dance! hit them to show your contempt!.. Tripurari steals glances at the stage where Dhani is pelted with a swarm of shoes! the compere abandons the stage and Dhani stands alone to face the hatred of the mob of brainwashed men! Viplav tries to calm them down. Tripurari watches the vulnerable hunted doe being chased by a pack of hounds! Dhani stands surrounded by men's shoes ,some even hit her as she hides her face by siding it..
Righteous anger erupts! Viplav as her redeemer tears his way to the stage through the mad rabble of the possessed men. he stands before her . shields her, yells at them to stop! as Viplav too gets shoes thrown at him! Tripurari sees Dashrant about to get up..so he shows Dashrant that he goes to protect Viplav. typically Tripurari ignites fire first then shows up as trying to put out the fire! he too yells at the mob to stop! shows he protects Viplav! Then Dashrant yells at the mad men to stop! and they do stop.. Dashrant goes on stage and does what he does best.. saves his Viplav! and says, enough Viplav! now come home! Viplav sees his dadajis power of crowd control.. but he has to say his piece too before he leaves. Viplav uses scathing words at the predominately male crowd, he scoffs at their faces that show, how much they enjoyed the show.. Dusshera is just another day where they come to get cheap thrills! as soon as they spot a vulnerable woman they start picking on her , start being violent to get kicks and pleasure! this is the real face of Benaras! Where men target helpless women! Dussehra! Is that how a devi is worshipped? is that how a woman is shown respect? they need to be ashamed of themselves! Is this what their religion teaches them? one in the crowd challenges him, yells at Viplav! he has defiled our faith! by giving a widow the semblance of Durga mata, he has made fun of our traditions and our faith! according to him ,is this the victory of good over evil? this kind of Dusshera we will not accept! if he plays with our faith like this, then we will punish him by throwing shoes! .. Viplav roars back at them ,so this is what their faith teaches them, to throw shoes at a woman? was Durga maa not a woman? and is she not a woman? a few minutes ago they were enjoying her performance! One sight of her white sari , one word by some son of an idiot![ Tripurari stands beside Dashrant] and they all turned mad! it's a woman who gives birth to us! it's a woman who gives support in all walks of our life! helps and guides us in her roles of being a mother, a sister , a daughter a wife! does being a widow rob them of their right to being a woman??? Dulari a widow clings to her daughter Dhani a widow too..
Overall a fantastic episode, very dramatic. Mishal was good. Eisha looked the part.. Raj laxmi did a good job . Hamlet53 27.10.15
Precap: Viplav appeals to the crowd.. people of beneras.. are we not in the name of our old values and traditions, maltreating our sisters ,daughters' daughter in laws; our women? Kanak is livid it's obvious news travels home to her and she questions Dashrant , is this untrue that in his presence his grandchild was being pelted with chappels and shoes? while he sits sipping tea peacefully.. Rajlaxmi tells Dulari , if you ask me , in this whole city vikal babu is the only man who is truthful and honest ! this is the difference between an illiterate and educated human being..
