Garuda and Aruna were real Brothers, They are the sons of Vinita, The Wife of Sage kashyap. Sage Kashyap had two Wives, Vinita and Kadru. Once Kashyap asked his wives to choose what their heirs would be like. Kadru chose to give birth to 1,000 serpents, whereas Vinata asked for only two sons with strength and prowess that would surpass that of Kadru's offspring.
Then Kadru laid 1,000 eggs and Vinata laid two. After 500 years, 1,000 serpents emerged from Kadru's eggs. However, Vinata's two sons failed to emerge from their shells. Vinata broke open one of her eggs and found an embryo with only the upper half-developed. The embryo became Aruna, (the red light that appears at dawn) Aruna cursed his mother and ascended into the sky, where he remains to this day as the chariot driver of the sun god. (He was the Father of Sampati and Jatayu) Another 500 years passed and Vinata's remaining egg finally broke open to reveal Garuda.
Garuda was only Defeated by vishnuji in his Life so since then He became the Vehicle of Lord Vishnu :)

@Varnita,
Thanks for the story honey, I never knew that!
I only have a minor correction to make. Maharishi Kashyapa did not have two wives. He had 13 wives, all of them the daughters of Prajapati Daksha (and the sisters of Mahadev's Sati).
Kashyapa's first wife Aditi is the mother of the Gods (Indra, Vayu, Varun, etc) while his second wife Diti is the mother of the Danavs.
Here's more information about him from wikipedia.

Kashyap

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
This article is about the Hindu sage Kashyapa or Kasyapa. See also Kassapa Buddha for information on the ancient buddha and Mahakasyapa information on the disciple of the Buddha. For King Kashyapa of Sri Lanka, see Kashyapa I

Kashyapa (Sanskrit ????? kasyapa) was an ancient sage (rishis), who is one of the Saptarshis in the present Manvantara; with others being Atri, Vashishtha, Vishvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, Bharadwaja [1]

Vamana avatar, Rishi Kashyap's son with Aditi, in the court of King Bali.

He was the father of the Devas, Asuras, Nagas and all of humanity. He married Aditi, with whom he fathered Agni, the Adityas, and most importantly Lord Vishnu took his fifth Avatar as Vamana, the son of Aditi, in the seventh Manvantara.[2] With his second wife, Diti, he begot the Daityas. Diti and Aditi were daughters of King Daksha Prajapati and sisters to Sati, Shiva's consort. Kashyap received the earth, obtained by Parashurama's conquest of King Kartavirya Arjuna and henceforth, earth came to be known as "Kashyapi".

He was also the author of the treatise Kashyap Samhita, or Braddha Jivakiya Tantra, which is considered, a classical reference book on Ayurveda especially in the fields of Ayurvedic pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics.[3] It can be safely assumed that there were many Kashyaps and the name indicates a status and not just one individual.

Birth and Lineage
Main article: Suryavansh

Kashyap was one of the Saptarshi Brahmins. According to Hindu Mythology, he is the son of Marichi, one of the ten sons (Manasa-putras) of the Creator Brahma. The Prajapati Daksha gave his thirteen daughters (Aditi, Diti, Kadru, Danu, Arishta, Surasa, Surabhi, Vinata, Tamra, Krodhavasa, Ida, Khasa and Muni [4] in marriage to Kashyap.[5]

  • His sons from Aditi or Adityas (Sons of Aditi) were, A?sa, Aryaman, Bhaga, Dhuti, Mitra, Pu?an, a daughter Bhumidevi, Sakra, Savit?, Tva???, Varu?a, Vi??u, and Vivasvat or Vivasvan,[4] who went on to start the Solar Dynasty (Suryavansha), which later came to be known as Ikshvaku dynasty, after his great grandson, King Ikshvaku, whose subsequent kings were, Kukshi, Vikukshi, Bana, Anaranya, Prithu, Trishanku, and finally King Raghu, who gave it the name, Raghuvansh (Dynasty of Raghu), and then further leading up to Lord Ram, the son of Dashrath.[6]
    • His sons from Diti were, Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha and a daughter Sinhika, who later became the wife of Viprachitti. Hiranyakashipu had four sons, Anuhlada, Hlada, Prahlada, and Sanhlada, who further extended the Daityas.[4]
    • Garuda and Aruna are the sons of Kashyap from his wife, Vinata [7]
    • The Nagas (serpents) are his sons from Kadru.
    • The Danavas are his sons from Danu.
    • The Bhagavata Purana states that the Apsaras were born from Kashyap and Muni.
    • Uttar Ramayana says Diti had a son named Maya who was the lord of Daityas[8]

In the family line of Kashyap, along with him there are two more discoverers of Mantras, namely, his sons Avatsara and Asita. Two sons of Avatsara, namely, Nidhruva and Rebha, are also Mantra-seers. In the Manvantara period named 'Svarochisha', Kashyap was one of the seven Sages (saptarishi) for that manvantara. The Indian valley of Kashmir in the Himalayas is named after him. THE TRANCE OF MAHRISHI KASHYAP AND MATA ADITI situated in AMIN (Kurukshetra)HARYANA opp.SURYA KUND

    The Shri Ram Stuti

    (1) sri ramacandra krpalu bhaju mana harana bhavabhaya darunam I
    navakamja-locana, kamja-mukha, kara-kamja, pada-kamjarunam II

O mind, remember Rama, the Lord of compassion, who will eradicate even the most terrible dread of life; his eyes are like newly-blown lutuses set in his lotus-face; lotus-like are his hands and like ruddy lotuses his feet.

    (2) kamdarpa aganita amita chabi, navanila-nirada sundaram I
pata pital manahu tarita ruci suci naumi janaka sutavaram II

With utmost humility I do obeisance to Sita's consort, Ramacandra, whose boundless beauty excels that of myriads of Cupids (taken together). He is as winsome as the rain-laden clouds. The yellow attire on his body, beautifully and sanctified, looks as charming as the flashes of lighting.

    (3) bhaju dinabamdhu dinesa danava-daitya-vamsa-nikamdanam I
raghunamda anamdakamda kosalacamda dasaratha namdanam II

Meditate on Rama, the delight of the house of of Raghu, root of all bliss, soothing as the moon to the Kosalas, Dasaratha's son, compassionate to the destitute, the scion of the solar race and the extirpator of the demons and diabolical daityas (giants).

    (4) sri mukuta kundala tilaka chaaru udaaru anga vibhusanana

    ajaanubhuja shara chaap-dhara, sangraama-jit-kharadushanam

He has a (resplendent) crown on his head, a pair of pendants in his ears, a lovely caste-mark on his forehead and ornaments on his lustrous body. The arms that reach the knees are holding the bow and arrows of the conqueror of Khara and Dusana (two of demonic adversaries).

    (5) iti vadati tulasida samkara-sesa-muni-mana-ramjanam I
mama hrdaya-kamj-nivasa kuru, kamadi khala-dala-gamjanam II

Tulasi Das says, "Sri Rama who brings about happiness and joy to the hearts of Lord Shiva and all others, may He reside in the depths of my heart and destroy all the evil thoughts such as desires, temptations, etc."
