Singing the wedding blues
By: Sandipan Dalal
July 21, 2006
If you thought troubled marriages are a common phenomenon only among Bollywood actors, think again. Blame it on the hectic lives they lead or the increased fan following, but nearly every singer in the industry today has a rocky personal life. Is it the pressures or the longs hours? Sandipan Dalal tunes in…

Sunidhi Chauhan: Too much, too soon

Big day: On March 31, 2002, she married music video director Bobby Khan.
How long did it last: She walked out of the marriage in September 2003.
Love hua: 18-year-old Sunidhi eloped and married Khan.
The problem: As a teenager, marriage looked hunky dory. She even severed ties with her parents for it. But later on, she regretted the decision because of the rising differences she had with her in-laws.
Fallout here: "I am divorced," says Sunidhi.
M for marriage: "A bond between two understanding partners."
My marriage: "No comments."

Are celebrites doomed to have troubled marriages?
The personal life of a singer does get affected. Even if you're seen out in a restaurant or a social gathering with a friend of the opposite sex, it becomes the talk of the town.

Do singers feel the same pressures that stars feel?
The pressures are there but you need to strike a balance. Whenever I'm there with my family, I spend quality time with them. A few days ago, I had taken off for my US tour and this time around I had taken my family along.

Babul Supriyo: Chod aaye hum woh galiya

Big day:
On July 22, 1995 he married Canada-based Riaa.
How long did it last: They were together for 11 years.
Love hua: It was a love marriage.
The problem: It is believed that irrevocable differences grew between the couple due to Supriyo's erratic working hours and constant travelling for shows.
Fallout here: I'm separated now.
M for marriage: Marriages are made in heaven and you can decide for yourself if you make an effort to do so.
My marriage: Two excellent human beings in a good situation.

Are celebrites doomed to have troubled marriages?
Erratic work hours and hectic travelling schedules are just vague excuses given as reasons for disharmony in any relationship. But they are often far from true. When I keep busy with my music, I remain happier and therefore, it makes me a much better individual in all my relationships.

Do singers feel the same pressures that stars feel?
It will be pompous of me to say that a celebrity status puts pressure on a marriage.

Sonu Niigaam: Getting personal

Big day: On February 15, 2002, he tied the knot with Kolkata-based Madhurima.
How long did it last: A little over three years.
Love hua: They dated for six years before getting married.
The problem: Romance crept out of the couple's life last year. The singer even confessed to growing differences with his wife. Nevertheless, the couple stay together under one roof.
No fallout here: Says Sonu, "People assume that we've been separated, as I don't let anyone enter my personal life. But I have never said that."
M for marriage: "Marriage is going to be obsolete in another 100 years. I believe any man-made institution has an expiry date," he says philosophically.
My marriage: "It's personal, and I wouldn't want to talk about it."

Are celebrites doomed to have troubled marriages?
People who are close to me know that I'm not a loose person.

Do singers feel the same pressures that stars feel?
My relationships have never been affected because of work. Be it my friends, girlfriends or any other people close to me. I would never ever allow them to affect my work.

Udit Narayan: Double trouble

Big day:
On June 17, 1982 he married wife Deepa. But this year his alleged first wife Ranjana Jha claimed that the singer tied the knot with her on December 7, 1984, in a village near Indo-Nepal border.
How long did it last: Jha barely stayed together with the singer.
Love hua: It was a love marriage with Deepa. I dated her for three years before tying the knot.
The problem: The singer got busy with his career and lived with wife Deepa and his son Aditya. As for the reasons for not talking about the marriage for over 22 years, Jha claimed that Deepa had threatened her.
No fallout here: Not separated with his wife.
M for marriage: Marriage is a good thing that can happen to you, provided there's tremendous understanding between the partners.
My marriage: I was proud of my clean image till I ran into this controversy two-and-a-half months back. But my marriage is going fine.

Are celebrites doomed to have troubled marriages?
It is difficult to survive these temptations but if you're honest and take the right course of life you can easily manage it. If Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha can cope, all of us can.

Do singers feel the same pressures that stars feel?
My wife is well-educated and a singer by profession. She is aware of the fact that fan following and tremendous attention are an inseparable part of this profession.

Abhijeet: Under pressure

Big day: I married my wife Sumati in 1990.
Love hua: A love marriage after dating for three years.
Fallout here: If it weren't for my children, I would have been separated by now.
The problem: All love is lost and there's misunderstandings between the couple.
M for marriage: As long as you've faith in your partner, marriage is good.
My marriage: Over the past six months, I have not been very happy with my marriage. I'm not getting separated because I don't want to get married again.

Are celebrites doomed to have troubled marriages?
It's true. There are two kinds of professionals: One group keep themselves busy with whatever work they get, and the other wants to do big assignments and spend the rest of the time at home. Also, I operate from my residence, which saves me from travelling across the city.

Do singers feel the same pressures that stars feel?
It depends from person to person. In my case, it creates trouble for me. I have got used to it now, and I no longer pay much heed to my wife's thoughts. At the end of the day, I'm working to keep my children and family happy.

Kumar Sanu: Please adjust!

Big Day: In 1986, he tied the knot with his first wife. He walked out of the marriage in 1994. He then married Saloni Bhattacharya in 1999.
Love hua: Both his marriages were arranged.
The problem: His first wife couldn't come to terms with his popularity with women. He divorced her in 1998.
No fall out here: He is happily married to Saloni and is a doting father to two daughters.
M for marriage: I'm very homely, and marriage ensured a happy and caring family for me.
My marriage: I'm a happily married man today.

The popularity and fan following creates a lot of speculation. Family members often misunderstand the singer.

Temptations are there, but if your wife is ready to adjust, then the marriage works.

Alka Yagnik: Art of time management

Big day: In the year 1989.
Love hua: It's a love marriage.
No fallout here: My husband is based in Meghalaya for business purposes. But we catch up every month. Not being able to live together has its sparks and disadvantages.
M for marriage: I believe in the institution of marriage.
My marriage: I'm happy in my marriage.

Are celebrites doomed to have troubled marriages?
I think it depends on the way an individual wishes to live his/her life. One has to decide the amount of time one wishes to devote to work and family.

Do singers feel the same pressures that stars feel?
We do get mobbed, hounded by calls and showered with SMSes. The spouse has to be patient and understanding. If there's any real trouble then the spouses can always smell it.
