Please read the whole write up. i know it's long but it's worth it.
Since past many weeks I've been thinking about it but somehow didn't have the heart to put my thoughts in writing because II happens to be my favorite show on music. What compelled me to put it in black and white was the fact that II could manage to pull only 13 lacs of votes after 5 galas. When Aman announced it I thought OMG II 3 won't be able to pull more than 5-6 lac votes. Another point to ponder over is the fact that we don't have too many good choices in II 2. We have very extreme choices with us. We have either the best or the worst to choose. Honestly, except Karunya, Amey, Meenal and Antara I find others not even worth to be in top 28. One of the reasons could be that the poor judges didn't have any choice but choose from the available lot and the 'intelligent' janta gave us 4 ratnas along with other semi-precious stones.
The most heart wrenching part of II this season is that the semi-precious stones are being bought easily by the janta at the cost of the real ratnas. India is hailed as a nation where music originated and has the most enviable history of giving birth to musicians like Tansen for example and some contemporaries like Pt. Ravi Shankar, Sri Hari Parsad Chaurasia, Pt. Jasraj and Zakir Hussain just to name a few. Music has been in the genes and hormones of Indians since time immemorial and hence my conscience simply refuses to accept the fact that Indians are choosing the likes of Sandeep, Ravi and Panna over the real jewels like Amey, Karunya and Meenal.
Indians are not besuras like what some of our neighbouring countrymen are claiming. They are not fools either to lose good singers but something is definitely spoiling the atmosphere here. Whatever it is the organizers need to do some introspection otherwise the damage caused will be beyond repair. The strategy adopted this time might help the channel gain money in the short-run but in the long-run it might lose it's good will and credibility and no talented person will ever dare to participate.
I know that it's not a talent hunt show but I guess talent and business can work together. If it is not then I don't see why the organizers should travel across the length and breadth of the country to short-list the best singers. One of the reasons why American Idol is a success is because talent is not compromised whatsoever. Hopefully, Indian Idol will follow its footsteps. IMO, talent and business can go together provided that the organizers adopt a different strategy to attract more votes.
Remember diamonds are forever….not the semi precious ones that glitter for a while.
