this is a beautiful beautiful discussion and well poured out thoughts...

pop idol, where all this originated is not as big as it was when it first came. similarly, we are comparing II to SRGMP and FG both are revamped and new shows respectively. I am not saying that II is old. however, II2 should be compared to FG2 and the revamped SRGMP 2... that way we will be able to analyse better the results and what is lacking in which show.

Besides, I think too many music talent contests are springing up in every channel and I am sure the public will not be able to take it for long. Its a question of another year or a couple of years - max.

Versatile singers will be able to make something out of their talent whether they participate in these shows or not. Talent has existed before FG,II or SRGMP existed and will exist after these shows are taken off air as well.

The reason that these shows have been successful is due to drama and internal politics. If one thinks that popularity is purely based on talent - what about the previous SRGMP without the public voting - it was popular, but not half as popular as II or FG was. Now with the mentors nataks and public voting, it has become the biggest show. basically these talent shows have just become reality TV shows replacing the action in some of Ekta's burnt out serials.

I am not sure if II would be a failure, but the talent displayed is very mediocre except Amey, Karunya, Meenal and to some extent maybe Antara.

I have not seen the II-1 season so cannot compare, but II-2, IMHO is quite un-impressive, especially when I am now also watching the American Idol. Imagine Farah as Paula Abdul or Anu Malik as Simon Cowell.Where is the Zing? 😕 .

II-2 I felt is too cosmetic and synthetic. None of the performances touched one's heart, barring a few. A few Kawa Kawa or Laaga Choonri me Daag is not enough.. I watch only because of the above mentioned singers, the day they are voted out. I am OFF.

SRGMP, even with all its politics and drama, have onething still in place that is talent, their baseline is higher than II. Though the earlier seasons had an old-world charm to it, which this season lacks but I am told this one is more popular..

Someone commented, that a lot of promotion goes on behind scenes, but even with all the promotion if a conestant comes across as fake, s/he will not be able to pull in audiences. At the end of the day, contestants have to connect to their audiences either by S-factor or X-factor or Z-factor. But I find none appealing that much in II-2, for whom I would leave all my daily chores and sit infront of TV.
NONE!!

So all the best to II-2 and 3 and so on!!

BTW, Great discussion... 👏

I'm glad that the discussion is moving fwd. Lashforever and ticks, both you guys are right. The point straight fwd is that if they wanna continue with all that drama let them do so but not at the cost of talent. Like ticks has pointed out srgmp and American Idol are still successful b'coz they are too disciplined when it comes to talent. A sane business startegy is the one that can take care of it in the long run.

My apologies if this is off-topic....

This is typical Indian business strategy (short term thinking) starting from a simple chaiwala to Ambanis and other multinationals. The first thing they think about is the profit (which make sense as they are in the business to make money) and customer/consumer comes last to them (here they are wrong). har businessman chahta hai jo ek baar aaya hai customer usko abhi hi loot lo baad main phir aaye na aaye e.g. a chaiwala will use milk (50% milk + 50% water), cheapest possible sugar and tea available, will use the same BARTAN again and again without washing. Yes, he is making money but he is not thinking about the customers, he has taken them for granted. or go to a shop and buy a trouser, he will try to sell chapeast material for as much as he can get from you.

whats the result, both chaiwala and clothes shopkeeper has made money but at the expense of customer, at the end of the day customer is not happy and if customer is not happy he wont be back to the shop again.

But, we Indians are also habituals to this strategy, we know what is happening but still go for the same things, dont we? we know all this crap is happening on Indian Idol but still we watch it every monday and tuesday and then crib and cry over real talent palced in bottom three and discuss it on forums.. what is the end result, they are making money and we are wasting our time and energy.. :)

So, who will let these business men know that we wont let this crap happen again?? Its our responsibility.. They will keep it doing again and again and again like they have done because they have taken us granted and they know they can take us granted because we will only crib, cry and discuss when everything is over but not before that.

So the essence of the matter is " we need to wake up, refuse to let it happen again and they will automatically change themselves", I liked this dialogue in Rang De Basanti - Jindagi jeene ke do hi tareeke hain, ek jo ho raha hai hone do ya phir utho and himmat karo usko badalne ki..

P.S. No hard feelings, I am also an proud Indian and I also crib, cry and discuss after everything has happened but I am ready to do anything to change the system.

My two cents....

I loved reading your response just honest. I think you've brought to our minds the ground reality. Yes, businessmen are taking us for granted and we the people debate and discuss to no point and without any concrete results. More specifically, wot else can we do in this case except cribbing and crying over the injustice happening? We still watch it b'coz we love music and wanna listen to our favourites singing. Isn't it? Otherwise there is no fun in watching the show. But do u really think we can make any difference and if it's possible then wot is it?

Sorry, if you find this idea a bit foolish but A very simple thing can be done in this case of Indian Idol. We all know Sony is doing this for Money and TRPs and as Sony is a paid channel, simply cancel the subscription and do not subscribe for it. If people dont subscribe and dont watch it, advertisers wont even come near to Sony so their whole idea of making money and TRPs will fail then a letter published in some famous indian daily newspaper or websites like rediff/indiatimes (stating why people are cancelling the subscriptions) will I think make them realise their mistake.

By cancelling subscription -
What a viewer will lost (short term) - Indian Idol 2

What they will gain (Long term) - More real talent oriented programs....

Seems so simple but it is possible and result - oriented.

Now, the question here is who will bell the cat and how many people will actually rise to bell the cat :)

Where there is a will, there is a way 😊

Hmmmm....looks like a gud one but is it practical? I mean there are millions of viewers watching it and not many ppl are serious about it. It looks like a govt policy...gud on paper but difficult to execute. Can we think of something else?
