Another thing about Pritam which is worth appreciating is that, he has given many newcomers or reality show contestants chance to do playback singing. He has given opportunities to singers like Monali thakur, Tarun sagar, Antara, Anwesha, yashita, etc. Even Neeraj shridhar an underated singer gave so many superhit songs under pritam last year.

Very true.. Thanks for sharing! 😊

Althugh I like pritam, it's important to be realistic about how much other md's have plagiarised...

Be realistic!
Please go through the list on this webpage. Listen to each song composed by Rajesh Roshan, Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit, Laxmi-Pyare, Anand-Milind, Bappi Lahiri, etc and listen to the original ones! They have copied ditto, line by line, melody by melody! How can u say Pritam plagiarizes more than others? Have u gone thru the list? 😲

ALL of them have plagiarized entire songs from English pop, rock, Latin pop, Classical, even OP Nayyar did it! 😆 😆

Better still, go to youtube, watch each song first in Hindi version, then in English version. You will have a good laugh like I did last night! 😆 😆

Even I was taken aback when I read that article in Hindustan Times. But you know the fact remains that all these greats have given innumerable hits which are originals. Anu Malik may have copied but then he has also given superhits like Border and Refugee. Nayaar Saab may also have copied but you can not take away from him 'Kashmir Ki Kali' or 'Mere Sanam'.

Seems like you want an empirical analysis. And coz you asked sweetly, I'll oblige.

People here think that Pritam's plagiarism is just the same as every other composer's. Some even went all the way back to greats like SD Burman, RD Burman and RABINDRANATH TAGORE! Well, I disagree with this. Pritam copies much more than these greats ever did.

Let's look at RD Burman and OP Nayyar (although people love them, they're still remembered for instances of plagiarism), Anu Malik (arch copycat of the 90's), Pritam (arch copycat of the 2000's), and Anand-Milind. So here goes...

First off, RD Burman has 47 songs that are proven to be plagiarised/inspired/lifted off others. I went through each one of these. Less than a handful are direct lifts (the tune and arrangements copied bar-by-bar) - most are inspirations in which the first few lines are lifted, or tunes are lifted but tweaked. If you look at IMDB, you'll find that he composed for somewhere around 280 films. That means he had fewer than 0.17 lifted songs per film (and that's including mild inspirations!)

Secondly, OP Nayyar has JUST 6 proven acts of plagiarism. Out of these, one is only partly inspired. According to IMDB, he composed for 56 films. That makes it 0.1 lifted songs per film (in other words, ONE lifted song in TEN films).

Thirdly, Anu Malik has 68 proven acts of plagiarism. Out of these, 16 were inspirations and not direct lifts. According to BollywoodHungama, Anu has composed for 209 films til date (discounting those that are yet to be released). So he had 0.33 lifts per film (again this includes very mild instances of inspiration).

Fourthly, Pritam has 50 proven acts of plagiarism. Again, this includes around 10 mild inspirations other than the direct lifts. Pritam has composed for 63 films til date (discounting those that are yet to be released). If you do the math, 0.79 lifts per film (this is the highest in the whole list). In fact, Pritam's 'lift rate' is more than twice as high as Anu Malik's and almost FIVE times as high as RD Burman's and EIGHT times as high as OP Nayyar's.

More worryingly, some of Pritam's biggest hits like Jab We Met and Gangster have a lot of plagiarised tracks, whereas this is definitely not the case with, say, RD Burman or Anu Malik.

Lastly, Anand-Milind have ONLY 13 proven acts of plagiarism (out of 171 films!) and Jatin-Lalit have 23 acts of plagiarism from around 60 films (0.38 songs per film).

Now, Pritam is definitely very talented and very popular. I'm a fan of his too. BUT, when I said we should be more realistic, I meant to say that we should not consider his acts of plagiarism the same as those of others. He HAS plagiarised more. And many of his biggest hits are plagiarised. We can still praise the guy, but no need to start comparing him to the greats like Burman or Nayyar.

PS: here's an example of a song that is 'mildly inspired' from another, by my fave Anu Malik!

The original, 'Yeh Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hai':

The mild copy, 'Chale Jaise Hawayein' (Notice how one tune is copied, and then changed considerably):

PPS: this website is the most comprehensive and authoratative survey of plagiarism in Hindi film music. http://www.itwofs.com/
