CHAPTER 6: IMLIE MEETS ARYAN AT THE TOWN HALL LUNCH
Aryan was in his room and almost done checking the final emails for the day. He dimmed the lights and put on some relaxing music. It was his routine to listen to some good old music before sleeping. He again thought about Imlie, he wanted to talk to her.
"Hi, What's up?" He thought to drop a text first.
Imlie was playing Antakshari(Sing along)with her friends. While she liked to listen to music, singing was her first choice. She loved to sing and dance with her friends during their Antakshari sessions.
He waited for 5 minutes and then called. Imlie had kept her phone on Abha's study table as they had gathered in Abha's room today.
"T it is, you have 1 minute"
"Whose phone is this one girls?"
" It's mine, what happened?"
" You are getting a phone call, Imlie"
" Must be my Amma, give me please"
"Hey, you guys have 15 seconds left" said a girl from the opposite team.
"Tum pass aaye, yun muskuraye, tumne na jaine kya sapne dikhaye. Aab toh mera dil jaage na sota hai, kya karun haaye Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" Imlie kept singing. Her mom usually called at this time so she had picked the call without checking the caller name.
âA it is, get going, you have a minuteâ
âHelloâ
"Hi Imlie, I am Ar"
"Aryan? You? How? I mean what happened? I mean Sir" she was shocked, confused and embarrassed. She disconnected the call. She couldn't gather the courage to call him back.
"You are such a bail buddhi Imaliya! Couldnât you check the name before picking the call? Stupid girl. Aryan I mean CEO sir was on the call and I was happily singing and laughing this side. What he may be thinking?â Imlie was talking to herself as she exited the room.
" What just happened? Why did she disconnect? Why was she singing on the top of her voice?" Aryan was as confused as Imlie. He didn't call again either. "Probably I shouldn't have called her at this time, she may be hanging out with her friends. Not everyone lives a life like me. No worries , I will talk to her tomorrowâ
Next morning, the intern bunch was very excited to be a part of the town hall as they would get a chance to meet the big names in the industry. Bhaskar Times was at the top in the industry and indeed had the best talent.
Imlie was excited and nervous at the same time. She wasn't sure yet how she should handle the situation with Aryan. She decided that though it will hurt her to let go of a dear friend, she will have to take this decision in the best interest of Aryan. After all, he has worked hard to reach the top and his position demands a great deal of respect. They canât be casual friends anymore.
BT had done exceedingly well in the last quarter and the financial results reciprocated. They had gained a significant chunk of market share in the rural areas where they had negligible presence earlier. They would also give awards to the best employees today. What a great year it has been until now.Aryan was happy as finally the company was performing as per his expectations. Amongst all this, he was also waiting to talk to Imlie as he knew today was a chance when all the employees can informally interact with each other.
The senior management shared the results with the team and awarded the best employees for their dedication and hard work. Aryan also shared the mission of the company for the next 3-5 years, the market landscape and the goals the company plans to achieve this year.
During lunch, the employees had gathered in informal groups. Imlie wasnât wanting to meet Aryan due to the awkwardness as she had Arya and Rhea with her. Rhea was her new intern friend from the other college. She was hot and beautiful. She was already tagged âthe good looking internâ by their intern bunch.
Aryanâs eyes were searching for Imlie. He wanted to see her and talk to her. Anand was also with him.
âHey, the interns team right?â said Anand as he noticed all the interns standing together in a group.
Aryan heard the term âInternsâ and turned around. Both of them saw each other.
âHello sirâ almost all of them said at the same time
âWhy donât you guys introduce yourselves? A one liner may be. That day we were little caught up so we couldn't talk muchâ Anand added.
After 3 of them, it was Imlieâs turn.
â Hello Sir, I am Imlie. I am from Xavierâs collegeâ She couldnât somehow look at Aryan
â Imlie, thatâs a unique nameâ Anand said
â Sir, I am Rhea Sharma. I am so thankful and excited to get an internship opportunity at Bhaskar times and be a part of this amazing teamâ
âI am Arya, Sir. Journalism is my passion. Very excited to be hereâ Arya said looking at Aryan only.
After all the introductions, they started talking about Delhi, their initial days at BT and current trends in the journalism industry. Imlie and Aryan actively participated in the conversations sharing quick glances multiple times.
After around 10 minutes, another team member from senior management joined in and started talking to Anand and Aryan about a project. They excused themselves from the interns group to carry on the conversation.
Imlie quickly turned around and walked towards the exit. Aryan was facing her so could see her walking out. He wanted to talk to her 1:1 but this project discussion was also important.
The employees were allowed to leave early today after lunch. Aryan was also planning to leave early. He quickly wrapped up the conversation with his team and thought to talk to Imlie. He couldnât find her in the hallway. When he exited the parking for his home, he saw Imlie walking towards the main gate. She was alone. He thought to check if he can drop her to hostel on his way home. Imlie saw Aryanâs car coming from the other side. Before Aryan could reach her, other two girl interns joined her. It was like they were so close yet so far that couldnât talk to each other.
Aryan couldnât talk to her today again which made him a little irate which he wasnât realizing yet. He was used to getting things at his disposal however and whenever he wanted. This situation was different.
Anand was at Aryanâs for dinner. Their houses were close by and Anand never missed an opportunity to eat chicken biryani made by Narmada. Even with all the house help available, Narmada still liked to cook frequently for her kids. They loved her cooking and she always made sure to call Anand if she was making his favorite biryani and aate ka halwa.
âSo guys, how was the townhall? Arpita checked. She was a finance major herself and a Director at âThe Rathore group of companiesâ
âWe rocked!â Aryan was happy that his loss making business was finally in the right direction. He aimed at nothing but the top in the industry.
â I always knew you'd be the best. My good wishes are always with my kids hereâ Narmada always cheered her kids.
âMassi, aate ka halwa is out of the world. You are so so goodâ
âYes Maa. Itâs perfect. Right sweetness too, I love it when itâs not very sweet, just the right sweetâ Arpita loved absolutely anything her mom made and left no opportunity to admire her efforts. She knew their mom waits the whole day to see the smiles on her kids faces and how much contentment she gets out of it.
âThat sweetness reminds me we have a new intern in our office- her name is Imlie. So unique name right? People usually keep names like Mithi, Misthi and such but her name is so unusual that it just stayed in my mindâ Anand was very casual with his cousins and Massi. He had one sister Maya who was about to get married soon. Looking at them no one could think they are Director, MD and CEOs of a company. They were together a team of very talented yet grounded people.
Listening Imlie's name, Aryan gave a shocked look to Anand. Where did she come from? What kind of connection is he talking about? And when will I be able to speak to her? And why did she leave? Is she avoiding me? Aryan was lost in his thoughts when Arpita interrupted.
"That reminds me guys, we are sponsors of a trade event in Mumbai on the 25th, that's next week. We need to have you both available for a one day conference. It's a leadership conference and C-suite employees are invited for discussion around the changing economic landscape. We need to participate" Arpita had been instrumental in corporate visibility for The Rathore group.
"I am travelling to France tomorrow afternoon and if things go as per plans, I should be back by 24th, so I guess I will be able to attend it" Aryan looked forward to discussions like this with other leaders in same or different industries.
âSo we will need 2-3 executiveâs thatâs you two and you can add one more as the face of Rathore group. Along with that we will need 4-5 employees preferably junior who can help at our desk. Get Rohan to lead that team as he has been quite good in events like these beforeâ Arpita added.
âWhy donât we ask the interns to volunteer for the event and manage the desk with Rohan. He anyways leads their team so should be easierâ Anand looked at Aryan for his views on it.
âThatâs good idea. We can let Rohan know tomorrow. He can finalize his team and also talk to out travel desk for travel arrangements to Mumbaiâ
â Great, I will let Rohan know tomorrow. What time is your flight to France Aryan? Office chalega ya WFH tomorrow?â
â I have couple of meetings which I will mostly attend from home and then leave around noon for airportâ
â Ok, see you soon buddy! Bon voyage!â Anand said as he got up to leave for his place.
Aryan went to his room. Before sleeping, he was reminded of Imlie. He refrained himself from texting her again and thought to talk to her in person only when they meet next. Possibly after a week, after he is back from France.
