May be the whole thing about the promise is actually an ideological challenge. The way Zeenat says that he cannot do business, and him promising that he will be one of the richest men in India. At that point he looks like he is completly in love with her.
But coming back to the present, he actually says "Mera vaada pore hone ko hai Zeenat,lekhin ise dekhne ke liye tumhe vaapas aana hoga" , there is an intensity in that dialogue, amounting to hatred (or so I think). All she wanted was money and now he has it. Its like his victory over her.
