I think that the "shared something intense" had alot to do with the fact that thney were both hunting Voldermort together alone for a period of time. That type of experience would obviously cause them to bond on some level that even Ron would not hae been able to understand. Remember that it was Hermoine and Harry alone who encountered the Voldermort in Godric's Hollow.
In any event, I don't think that that intense emotion had anything really to do with romantic love, but that is not to say as so many mentioned already, that they did infact love each other, but more on a brother-sister level than anything else.

But you guys are forgetting this part --
During a recent sitdown, Rowling confessed that Hermione "shared something very intense with Harry." That thing, indeed, "could've gone that way."

I may be mistaken but I think the "could've gone that way" comment had something more to do with her as a writer had the opportunity to take the story in a different direction, with it (the storyt) being just as believable. It didn't (in my view) have anything to do with the fact that romantic feelings did exisit on the part of the characters and that they decided to ignore these feelings and marry other ppl.We keep thinking about Hermoine and Ron, but we're forgetting that Harry clearly was in love with Ginny (especially in the last two novels), so I don't even think that he would have considered a romantic attachment to Hermoine for that reason as well as he knew how much Ron cared for Hermoine.😳
"[Kloves] felt a certain pulll between them at that point. And I think he's right. There are moments when [Harry and Hermione] touch, which are charged moments. One when she touches his hair as he sits on the hiltop reading about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and [two] the moment when they walk out of the graveyard with their arms around each other."

I think JKR pretty much confessed that had Hermione not been strongly attracted to Ron (Note that I say 'attraction'), Her and Harry probably had a strong chance, and I don't see why not - Harry and Hermione more or less share the same background, except that Hermione is not the 'Girl who lived', they understand each other extemenly well - I find the fact that Hermione supported Harry (twice) when Ron didn't to be unavoidable. It gives way to a direct implication that Hermione understands Harry better than Ron does, and can even defy Ron if need be to support Harry. Definitely Hermione understood Harry in a lot of ways Ron did not, but in other parts of the books, Ron understood Harry in ways Hermione couldn't. Why can't we take Hermione's understanding of Harry as a very strong bond of friendship instead of romance? Remember, JKR even said in one interview that she gave friendship more important over romance in her story because not many books highlight true friendship as an essential part of life, because most books write about romance being more important.
And Shelley's right. Aren't we forgetting all the parts where Harry felt romantically attracted to Ginny, like thinking how nice her hair smelled, or how she looked pretty that day, or feeling twinges of jealousy when she went out with her boyfriend or talked about liking another guy? This was the exact way Hermione felt when Lavender went all gushy over Ron, and she became angry or irriated with Ron more than usual in the 6th book, for reasons she could not explain. Even in the 4th book, Hermione became a little peeved when Ron had forgotten that she was a girl and therefore he could ask her to the Yule Ball.😆 I think sometimes, we feel ourselves thinking Harry and Hermione had romantic interest in each other because of the strong friendship scenes JKR wrote that are so touching and which usually, authors who write romances books write about.I remember that she also admitted that there were 'charged' moments between Harry/Hermione in the book. I'll quote what she said:When Harry admitted that he sees Hermione as his 'sister' in DH, was probably to pacify Ron and persuade him to stab the locket. He knew that Ron loves Hermione, so he probably used the 'sister' card to shield his inner feelings [which I'm sure he wouldn't have realized existed in that moment] to make Ron do something which was far more important then.
While this is a possibility, I don't think this was the case because if Harry had any romantic feelings toward Hermione, how could he have romantic interest in Ginny? While there are multiple examples in the books where Harry feels protective of Ginny or sees her in more than "just a friend" way, there aren't any examples where Harry feels romantic interest in Hermione. Also, if Hermione had any romantic interest in Harry, what about the passionate kiss she and Ron shared in the Room of Requirement in Hogwarts during the final battle?😉 Lol, I don't think anyone but someone who's in love with the other person could kiss them that way.Thourought enjoyed reading your viewpoints though, so thanks!👏😃
Good to know your opinion too ⭐️Thanks!😛 I'm thinking you're a Harry/Hermione shipper, right?😉 Have you ever read that fanfiction where James comes back to life in Harry's 5th year and he and Harry go to the Granger's house for the summer? In the duration before they all leave for Hogwarts, Harry and Hermione fall in love. The story was well written and though I'm a Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione shipper, I loved reading it. I'll try finding it for you if you want.
