Chapter 22-B

Gulaal had been looking after the guests along with her mother when Rewa comes near and says "aunty kya aap batha sakte hain ki upar washroom kahan hai?mere dress par juice gir gaya hai aur main ise saaf karna chahthi hoon,isse pehle ki is par daag pad jaaye".

Poonam looks at her and says "arre beta,dhyan rakhna chahiye na.itni sundar dress hai.chal Gulaal le jaayegi tujhe.woh madadh kar degi.Gulaal,beta ise apne kamre mein le jaa.yahan main sambhaal loongi".

Gulaal: "theek hai ba.chalo Rewa."

They reach upstairs and as they are about to enter Rewa holds her hand and says "maine tumse jhoot bola Gulaal.main tumhe yahaan isliye le aayi taaki Kesar tumse mil sake".

Gulaal tries to protest "lekin Rewa neeche ithne saare mehmaan hain.mujhe unka khayaal rakhna hai aur agar kisine dekh liya tho theek nahi hoga".

Rewa: "kisisko patha nahi chalega.main hoon na.tum daro nahi.tum usse mil lo Gulaal.kal se uska mood kharab hai.sab par chilla raha hai.agar aaj tumse baat nahi kar paaya na tho ghar jaakar hamaara jeena mushkil kar dega woh". Rewa gives her a small smile and pushes her inside the room and after speaking to Kesar closes the door.

Gulaal looks at Kesar hesitantly and says "tumhe mujhse baat karni thi.ithni bhi kaun si zaroori baat hai?"

Kesar doesn't say a word. He quietly comes close to her and looks at her. Gulaal looks up at him and a small shiver passes through her. The way he was looking at her-it was possessive, proud and happy. A warm feeling spread through her.She tries to say something but is unable to speak as Kesar stops her from doing so by placing his finger on her lips. He says in a low tone "kuch math bolo Gulaal.mujhe is pal ko mehsoos kar lene do."

Gulaal blushes and stares back at him wide-eyed lost in the moment. The intensity in his eyes leaves her spell bound. Kesar comes closer to her as his finger continues to trace her face, moving back some of her hair behind her ears. His warm breath tickles her ears as he whispers "ek hi din hua tumhe na dekhe hue,lekin aisa lag raha hai jaise barson beet gaye". Kesar laughs gently as he continues "aur dekho tho, tumhare pyaar mein main ithna paagal ho gaya hoon ki filmy dialogue jhaadne laga hoon". Gulaal doesn't smile,instead she touches Kesar's cheek lightly with her hand "maine bhi bahut miss kiya tumhe Kesar.kal jab tumse baat nahi hui tho mujhe ek khalipan,ek adhurepan ka ehsaas hua." Kesar is overwhelmed by her confession and he brings her hand which had been placed on his cheek near his lips and lightly kisses her palm. He holds her face in both his hands gently and places a soft kiss on her forehead. He places small,tiny kisses all over her face and finally gets close to her lips. Gulaal had closed her eyes holding onto his arms tightly. Kesar moves back a little and smiles. He whispers in her ear "mujhe sach mein tumse baat karni hai Gulaal.lekin agar tum mere itne kareeb rahogi tho shaayad main sab kuch bhool jaaunga". Gulaal opens her eyes and looks at him puzzled. Kesar makes her sit on the bed and he kneels down in front of her holding her hands in his.

Kesar: "main jo bolne waala hoon shaayad use sunkar tumhe thoda dukh ho". Gulaal gets agitated and asks "kya hua Kesar?sab theek tho hai na".

Kesar places hand on her cheek to reassure her: "nahi ghabraanewaali koi baat nahi hai.woh mujhe kuch dinon ke liye tumse door jaana pad raha hai."

Gulaal is stunned "kya?" Kesar looks at her shocked face "haan woh ek naye project ki dekh rekh ke silsile mein mujhe sheher se baahar jaana hoga".

Gulaal asks in a low tone "kitne din ke liye?"

Kesar is unable to look at her sad face and replies with his head bent down "ek hafte ke liye"

Gulaal: "ek hafta"then she realizes something and says "matlab jab main office join karungi tab tum wahan nahi rahoge". Kesar helplessly nods his head "mujhe maaf kardo, Gulaal.maine bahut koshish ki taal sakun lekin tum tho jaanthi ho na Dushyant bha abhi abhi theek hue hain.unka safar karna unki sehat ke liye theek nahi tho mujhe hi jaana pad raha hai".

Gulaal wanted to stop him,tell him not to go leaving her but it would not be right. She could not be so selfish. She understood that Kesar would be equally affected by the separation and did not want to make him feel guilty and sad. She touches his cheek gently which makes him look at her. She could see the anxiety,the restlessness and the fear of the upcoming separation in his eyes. She smiles and says in a gentle voice "Kesar,ek hafta hi tho hai.woh tho yunhi nikal jaayega aur phir tum tho mujhse roz phone pe baat karoge na.please ab hans do.tumhara yeh udaas chehra bilkul acha nahi lag raha.smile karo please". Kesar understood that Gulaal was trying to make him feel better and he says "Gulaal,jaise hi waapis aaunga main Motaba se baat kar loonga.bas ab bahut ho gaya.main tumse aur door nahi rehna chahtha.main tumhari baat bhi nahi sunoonga. Tho tum kuch math kehna".

Gulaal replies shyly: "nahi Kesar main kuch nahi kahoongi kyunki ab main bhi tumse door nahi rehna chahthi".

Kesar with a huge smile on his face: "yeh hui na baat.ab chalo jaldi se meri treat do".

Gulaal is confused: "treat?arre khana tho neeche hai".

Kesar: "khana!khane ki baat kaun kar raha hai?mujhe tho kuch meetha chahiye jo sirf tum mujhe de sakti ho".

Gulaal though confused at first soon realizes what Kesar meant: "Kesar tum bilkul besharam ho aur waise bhi mujhe neeche jaana hai.ba mujhe doondh rahi hogi" and tries to get up and move away. Kesar doesn't let her go and holds onto her "nahi,treat liye bina main tumhe yahaan se jaane nahi doonga.agar jaldi jaana hai tho '.."

Gulaal shyly replies "theek hai" and comes closer to him. He pulls her towards him and holds her in a tight embrace and is about to kiss her when suddenly they hear a knock. They break apart and soon the door opens. Rewa comes in, understands she has interrupted looking at Kesar's annoyed expression and Gulaal's embarrassed smile "sorry ,mujhe andar aana pada.tumhari baa yahin aa rahi thi isliye".

"Gulaal,beta darwaza khol" . They hear Poonam ba's voice and Gulaal quickly gestures Kesar to hide in the wash room and opens the door. Poonam ba enters the room and looks at Rewa's dress which looked clean "chalo acha hai,daag nahi pada.agar saaf ho gaya ho tho neeche chalein. Roopa tere bare mein pooch rahi thi beta."

Gulaal: "haan ba aap chaliye.main bas abhi aathi hoon."

Rewa: "ba,main bhi aapke saath chalthi hoon.Gulaal aa jaayegi.kyun Gulaal".

Poonam ba and Rewa exit the room and Kesar comes out complaining "kya kuch karna padta hai pyaar mein.jhoot bolna,choron ki tarah chupna.yeh sab mujhe bilkul acha nahi lag raha.main tho us din ka intezaar kar raha hoon jab main tumhara haath sab ke saamne haq se pakad sakoon."

Gulaal laughs: "arre yeh kya Kesar tum darr gaye".

Kesar gets offended: bilkul nahi.main kisi se nahi darta.agar main chahoon tho abhi isi waqt hamaare bare mein sabko bathaa sakta hoon. lekin main nahin chahtha ki meri wajah se tumhari badnaami ho isliye chup baitha hoon.main yeh bilkul bardaasht nahi kar paaunga ki meri wajah se tumhari izzat ko thes pahunche."

Gulaal: "mujhe patha hai Kesar.main tho bas mazaak kar rahi thi.chalo ab mujhe jaana hoga".

Kesar suddenly rushes towards her, hugs her from behind and whispers in her ear, "Gulaal,ek baat tho hai chahe baaki sab kuch mujhe acha na lage lekin mujhe is tarah chup chup ke milne main bada mazaa aata hai.ek ajeeb sa thrill hai.aur phir tum aise kaise jaa sakti ho bhool gayi kya, meri treat'.."

Gulaal turns around in his arms with a mishchevious smile and says quietly "theek hai,pehle apni aankhen bandh karo".

Kesar reluctantly closes his eyes and he shivers slightly as he feels her warm breath on his cheek. She feels her soft lips touch his cheek and then all of a sudden she manages to break away from his hold. He opens his eyes to see her standing at the door laughing at his plight "Kesar,ithni aasani se nahi.tumhe thodi aur mehnat karni padegi aur thoda sa intezaar bhi karna padega". She then leaves the room as Kesar looks on with a confused,dazed look.

Gulaal's smile is intact as she walks down the stairs searching for her mother. She spots her mother near Roopa and is about to join them when she hears her name being taken. She thinks that someone is calling her and turns around. Instead she sees two women talking about her oblivious of her presence as their backs were towards her.

1^st woman: "yeh Gulaal kaun hai?"

2^nd woman: "oh,aap ladke ke side se hain na isliye shaayad nahi patha.woh Poonam aur Revji ki badi beti hai".

1^st woman: "shaadi ho chuki uski?"

2^nd woman: "haan shaadi tho ho chuki lekin bechaari ka pathi ab is duniya mein nahi raha.shaadi ke do maheene ke andar hi uski maut ho gayi ek accident mein"

1^st woman: "kya? Woh vidhwa hai? vidhwa hokar aise kapde pehen rahi hai.aur is shubh avsar ek vidhwa ka kya kaam?isse bada abshagun aur kya ho sakta hai".

2^nd woman: "maine bahut samjhaaya sab ko lekin kisine meri nahi maani.Revji tho ulta mujh par chillane lage yeh kehkar ki Gulaal ki isme koi galti nahi hai.ladke ke matha pitha ko bhi isme kuch galat nahi laga.ab main kya kahoon".

1^st woman sighs deeply: "hamaare zamaane mein tho ek vidhwa ko aise shubh maukon se door rakhte the.lekin yahaan tho bahut bada anarth ho raha hai.aur woh ladka kaun hai jiske ke saath woh hans khel rahi thi".

2^nd woman: "woh uske pati ka chota bhai hai".

1^st woman in a harsh tone: "pati ka chota bhai.hmm'. lagta hai dono ke beech kuch khaas rishta hai.mujhe tho us ladke ke gharwaalon par taras aa raha hai.ek bte tho kho hi chuke hain ab shaayad doosre bte par bhi is manhoos ki nazar padne waali hai".

2^nd woman: "yehi tho.mujhe bhi yehi laga.lekin hum kaun hothe hain bolne waale.jinhe sochna,samajhna chahiye wohi apni aankhen bandh karke baithe tho hum kya kar sakte hain. Acha aap ne suna woh Mrs.Mehta ki beti unke ghar ke naukar ke saath bhaag gayi'''"

Gulaal is literally sivering. Her hands and feet are totally numb and she suddenly feels dizzy and is about to fall when someone supports her.It is Sudha. Gulaal looks at her in a daze. Sudha takes her to a nearby chair and makes her sit.

Sudha: "baith Gulaal.main tere liye paani leke aati hoon". As soon as Sudha turns around a small smirk appears on her face "arre kithna acha mauka mila hai.mujhe iska poora faayda uthana chahiye.un dono ki baatein sunkar pehle se hi Gulaal hil gayi hai ab main apni taraf se thodi baatein bol doon tho Kesar aur Gulaal ki choti si lovestory shuru hone se pehle hi khatam ho jaayegi aur phir Kesar-Talli ki shaadi mein koi rukaawat nahi hogi."

Sudha comes back with the water and sits near Gulaal,who is still looking shocked and confused. "Gulaal,tum un logon ki baat par dhyaan math do.unhe tho bas ek mauka chahiye baat karne ke liye.tum bura math maano.aur waise unhe kuch nahi patha na.woh thode hi jaanthe hain ki tum aur Kesar sirf ache dost ho.aur yeh ki Kesar ki shaadi ki baat bhi chal rahi hai". Gulaal looks at Sudha in a confused manner. Sudha keeps a hand on Gulaal's shoulder and continues "haan Gulaal,Kesar aur Talli ki shaadi ki baat ho rahi hai ghar mein".

Gulaal mutters "Talli! lekin woh tho Dush'..".

Sudha: "Dushyantji,huh nahi Gulaal ,woh tho sirf uska bachpana tha.nahi tho kya sach meinTalli aur Dushyantji ka koi mel ho sakta hai?Panba ne khud mujhse Kesar aur Talli ke baare mein kaha hai.isliye Gulaal,tum aisi baatein sunkar dukhi math ho.unhe yeh nahi patha na ki tum aisa kuch bhi nahi karogi jisse us parivaar ko yaa apne dost Kesar ko koi dukh pahunche.Gulaal,meri raay mein tum agar Kesar se thodi doori maintain karogi tho hi acha hai tab aisi baatein kabhi nahi sun ni padengi.

Nahi tho log bas aise hi baatein karte rahenge tum dono ke baare mein.zara socho is parivaar ki kitni badnaami hogi.sab se zyaada asar tho Kesar ki zindagi par hi hoga.Kesar ke bhavishya par iska effect bahut kharaab hoga. Business relations spoil ho jaayenge aur log hazaar baatein banaayenge.isse sirf hamara parivaar hi nahi tumhare baa,baapji ko bhi takleef hogi.isliye yehi acha hoga ki tum apni taraf se koshish karo ki aisa kuch kabhi na ho.main tumhara bhala chahthi hoon Gulaal,isliye is tarah khul kar baat kar rahi hoon.bura math maanana".

Suddenly Talli comes over to call sudha "di,aapse koi milna chahtha hai.keh rahe hain ki woh aap ko achi tarah jaanthe hain.chaliye".

Sudha looks at Gulaal and says "meri baat dhyaan se sochna Gulaal", and she walks away with Talli.

Gulaal looks on with a tired,defeated expression on her face.

Soon the guests start to leave and Kesar keeps searching for Gulaal to say a final good bye as he had to travel tomorrow early morning. But he doesn't find her anywhere. Finally Kesar,Sudha,Talli and Rewa take leave. Kesar is very disappointed that he could not see Gulaal before going. He had no idea that Gulaal was standing right there hiding behind the curtain. She had seen him leave with tears in her eyes. She did not think she would be able to face him right now. Gulaal knew that one look at her and Kesar would know that something was wrong with her. She needed time to go over the facts and make some tough decisions and for that she needed to be strong which would be near to impossible if she looked into Kesar's eyes.
