When I first discussed about Gulaal Kesar relationship, i.e. motherly like and the way she slaps Kesar under the shed in the rain scene, when he tells Gulaal that he loves her. There was a lot of do-not-label-this- relationship cries. Well the show is over now, Kesar-Gulaal agreed to be together and most of us believe that Gulaal CVs did not change its storyline and ended in time.
Now if you have visited Manasi Parekh facebook page there is an interview of Manasi in the TV Magazine GR8! March 2011 issue which is scanned and put there and in that she states (now this is from the horses mouth) The second question on this page 82:

Under the question, The best phase in Gulaal's life that you have enjoyed the most.
Around 5th line she states:
I also enjoy the current relationship with Kesar played by Ali. Gulaal is like his mom who cares for him and guides him and they are also bonded by the relationship of a husband and wife...
If the actor had this understanding of the characterization then that was clearly shown in her body language, no matter what anyone says. She treated him accordingly, bathed him and kissed and hugged him and played with him, scolded him, ghar walon aur mohallay walon ki shakayatein bhi sunti rahi etc. When he returns from the boarding, she has tears in her eyes and runs her hand from his face and around his shoulders. as if kitna bada ho gaya re... you can see a similar expression in KKKG, when Farida Jalal discovers that Hritik Roshan is her 'baba'. Gulaal keeps it less vocal but her expressions are the almost same .. motherly.
Regarding the ending, in my opinion the show was suppose to end when Gulaal tells Kesar is that 'Ab ye mera parivaar nahi raha' apna haath churati hai and MB also promises her on behalf of the family that they will always live together the way Gulaal wanted them to and she bids farewell and Kesar leaves goes to the city. That would be the original ending.
The storyline after that was totally filmy and much below Gulaals own standard.
Those of us who still think that MP was wrong in her understanding of her (pre-leap) character she played and our analysis of the earlier relationship is correct then look up.. pigs must be flying..
