Her in-laws are her number one priority, it's the traditional, conservative painting which has been illustrated before us. Although the birth parents bring their daughters into the world, they become strangers when they are married off into their "own" families.
Gulaal epitomises such an example, especially in yesterday's episode where she fought against her own mother, telling her not to interfere with "her family matters". Notice Gulaal's mother didn't argue against that as if it really was a moot point, despite it being pointed out directly, "Are you referring to your own mother as a third person, Gulaal?"
Gulaal is also naive; and can be easily mistaken. There are many posts I read which state that Gulaal shouldn't be acting so mindlessly when it comes to Kesar. The fact when he is extra nice to her should make her suspicious, she should acknowledge that he must have a hidden agenda. How can she trust his words so blindly just because he says them with a smile plastered on his face...but it's her relationship with Kesar which has allowed her to act so.
The ambience in the kitchen scene yesterday is one of the particular reasons why she innocently fell prey to Kesar's ulterior motives.
For a woman who is still besotted with her first love/husband to the extent she still confides in him via a photograph, sharing her woes and worries...living by the guidelines she believes he has set for her, you know she lives in her past to a certain extent.
Bearing that in mind, if her love for Vasant hasn't changed, you know that she still, again to a certain extent, perceives Kesar as that little boy whom she has always cared for, treating him the way she has always and in the way she'd think Vasant would treat him...although Gulaal shares a bond with many members of her family, Kesar and Gulaal as we all know have been special together.
For example, even from the deeyarvattu, we gather he doesn't hesitate to listen to Gulaal, as a child he always looked up to her and Vasant; she obviously still has that in her mind, eventhough it has been ten long years.
When Kesar walks into the kitchen, you can see how she sanguinely asks him, "Kuch chahiye kya", on the demand for food and for her to feed him, she willing complies. It isn't even that she gives him a proper meal but something just to fill his desire at that moment, "Mittai kha", she doesn't flinch when he queries "tu nahi khilaeygi?"...she just smiles and walks over...
It really is the way you'd treat a little kid right? Any adult would understand and leave the kitchen, but there is still alot of stubborn, childishness reflected in some of Kesar's mannerisms...and he can get away with it too-cause it's Gulaal with whom he behaves so..to Gulaal, it's just that relationship she has always shared with him coming back to life, little Kesar coming to see her if he ever needs anything...
The viewers however realise that he's particularly stubborn on this event due to some other hidden agenda he has...
The thanks she gives to him is genuine as well as the apology; her problem is that she never means to harm but she ends up doing so inadvertenetly. She loves both Talli and Kesar, and in her perfect little world the two are meant to reside together (especially since she matches them up to herself and Vasant)...only Kesar doesn't want Talli, he loves Gulaal.
For this conservative woman however, if anything means more to her than her in-laws...then it is her word, and she will always try to ensure the two coincide. Again the problem is...they don't where Kesar is concerned. Her love for Vasant, social norms of a boy getting married to a girl of his age, her promise to Talli are on the one side for Gulaal, whilst Kesar stands alone with his heart in his hands on the other. Gulaal's choice is obvious.
As soon as she finds that Kesar has turned to see her reasoning, she doesn't question his motive or his reasons, not once. She's happy they both want the same things, the happiness of the family has resulted in his decision, and nothing matters more to her.
Talli is a lost sole who is sheltered under Gulaal's wing and she cares for her, she knows her feelings for Kesar albeit Gulaal is probably the cause of that too but again she makes it her responsibility to ensure Talli gets her happily ever after...and that's all that matters.
Even when Kesar asks her whether she's happy, she repeats, "Main?"...since it is never about her, everyone's happiness trumps her own.
The part where the ladoo is crushed is pretty metaphoric, in a horribly sinister way with that background music...I actually have goosebumps. They sometimes refer to it as a "Shaadi ka ladoo" but when Kesar grabs Gulaal's hand aggressively, you see it crumbling to pieces...an indication of Kesar and Talli's post marriage life again because of Kesar's treatment? (that is if the marriage happens)...
You can tell from his expression that Kesar isn't trying to be negative, not really. He hasn't got a malicious smirk on his face as he reveals that hidden agenda to Gulaal, "I'm going to prove that you made a huge mistake by promising me to Talli"...his eyes are narrowed, he is in such intense pain as if Gulaal is physically torturing him at that point. He's blaming her for the hurt she is going to cause Talli, for the hurt that burns him as he stands before her right now...This isn't Kesar, he's the good guy...but with desperate times come desperate measures. He couldn't get through to her in any other way, he couldn't confer the feeling that was tearing him up inside to her as she just wasn't interested, acting indifferently and ultimately telling him he had no right over her so that she could evade his questions...the ordeal he has endured regarding Vasant's death has troubled him for ten years, without solving the first dilemma Gulaal then tells him about Talli and her promise...what's a guy to do?
Gulaal's reaction is slightly painful to watch...I feel for her, maybe she deserves the pain that emanates from Kesar who she's scorned...but maybe she doesn't. If a person has every tried to do the right thing and has had it reverse so bad that your actually drowning in the quicksand of the mess you have created yourself-that is Gulaal's situation right now. She would lose no matter what, how was she supposed to know Kesar wouldn't want to marry Talli, although she shouldn't have meddled there was nothing to suggest that her whole plan would backfire. She reasoned with Pann Ba (I think) at one point, praising the attributes of Talli, the fact that she is familar to the household, the fact that she understands Kesar (again she's wrong) but its what she has blindly observed in that perfect (or not so much) world of hers...dearie me.
Kesar is a good boy, Talli is a good girl, they are the perfect match. Talli deserves to be happy and getting married to Kesar will bring her that joy and he will keep her happy forever. It's all good intentioned stuff...only then- Then the glass surrounding the little bubble of hers, shatters and you can just see the disbelief on Gulaal's face as Kesar's words ring in her ears. Kesar, not so good anymore, will make Talli cry so much that you'll regret your promise. It's really not what she expected.
I actually loved Kesar for telling Gulaal she had no right over him...again it's an avengeful hit. That was her defence barrier yesterday and he used her own move against her. Wah!
If I bring int the little kid Kesar theory again, she said no one apart from Vasant has a right over her, but she still expects the same Kesar, the one who used to do as she said, since he obliged when he was little...nope! Wrong! It's been ten years...and he's not that kid anymore...
She realises that she really has no option but to plead, defeated, "Kesar tu aisa nahi kar sakta"...I feel so sad looking at her. It's actually heartbreaking :(
Kesar's tears prove how broken he is...and it's true; one decision and three lives are ruined.
