I read an article an year back or so I think where researchers, geologists and others are saying that it is bound to happen since earth is going through 6th mass extinction.

Probably human activities has expedited the process

Yes... human activities have expedited the process and we have reached this stage in only 250-300 years... since the industrial revolution in 1750.

Quite simply, earths surface temperature is rising. As in the entire earth has to be warmed by a few degrees. If it goes beyond 2 degree Celsius it would be irreversible. We are nearing 1.5 C which still has a chance of turn back.

Geological time which defines a particular time period through which scientists trace earth's history and analyse is currently called the Holocene... but some scientists Want it to be called Anthropocene... influenced by humans.

Our human race will be single handedly responsible for wiping out the entire planet if the govts don't act now. And it needs a global effort... one country or one city is too miniscule to effect... although it can lead by example.

Bhutan is a carbon neutral country. Meaning it collects and sequesters more carbon than it produces.

Carbon is usually the calculation unit for CC effect.

Holocene and Anthropocene I did read about.

Global effort is extremely important.

Infact bursting crackers was banned in Diwali in Delhi

But people still burst crackers and it was so polluted by 10:00 at night that I had to close all the doors and windows.

These days few scientists are saying that regions which have more trees, their biomass is increasing because of increase in Carbon dioxide in air, since it is helping them more in photosynthesis.

So maybe planting more plants and trees is one of the most feasible solution at this time maybe.

Because neither is the population reducing nor will the development stop.
