I think he 1) felt very, very insulted and heartbroken and 2) realized that anything he said would not be accepted in Sai's mind at the moment.

Let's say that he did say that nothing was there (like he has said before) - Sai would not have believed in that moment because she does not believe it herself. If he had told Sai he loved her, again she would not believe it because she does not sense it.

Sai is just that way. She needs to fully accept something clearly for it to have value to her. Nothing he would've said would have had any impact.
