Now coming to the story, I reiterate the comment I made to Cheeku!

I've proven myself useless again! Part 2 has become so long ki ab 3rd part me chali gayi!

I've been writing for over 9 years and I still haven't learnt how to predict the length of what I write! It starts with a scene and takes a life of it's own! And keeps growing!

I'm assuming the readers will enjoy the fact that it has become longer!

Part 2

Settling back comfortably, Sai looked at her husband through the rearview mirror. The rains having started again, he was focussed on the road, until he got out of the service road and onto the main highway leading home.

Sensing her gaze, he looked up, and catching her eyes, smiled, nodding his chin up in a silent question. Shaking her head back to denote that it was nothing, she leaned her head back, not taking her eyes of his face, drinking it in, seeing how they got to meet each other very infrequently these days.

“Bappa karein ye Covid jaldi hi in control ho jaaye”, Sai prayed, thinking of all the loss she saw everyday and grateful that her family and her husband remained safe so far. Her worry for him and his for her, seeing how both were frontline workers, was something they let slide, accepting it as part of their jobs.

Shifting her gaze to the window, Sai let herself relax, watching the familiar route, eager to get home.

Looking up at his wife via the mirror, Virat smiled to see her lost in thought, gazing out of her window, and thought back on the day a couple of months ago, when Sai came and sat next to him as he went through some files.

Covid cases were slowly increasing in Nagpur and with quite a few officers shifted to Covid management, Virat’s responsibilities over Crime Prevention had increased and he came home with a bunch of files everyday.

Reluctant as he was to lose out on the time he got with Sai, he was duty bound to finish them in time, and Bappa had given him a wife so understanding that she took it all in her stride. She was his biggest strength and support when he had to leave everything behind in the line of duty, her sheer confidence in him his biggest source of inspiration.

Now a second-year student, Sai had settled down into her study-routine and was able to manage home and him and studies efficiently, many thanks to how her Virat Sir and Aai helped her out with almost everything, and Mansi Bua having become an unexpected ally, once she returned from her long mandir darshan yatra the first few months of her marriage. She was close to Aai and through Aai, had come to see Sai for who she really was and had become a strong, silent supporter.

Their daily balcony chat sessions had shifted indoors, with him perusing files, and her sitting next to him, updating him about anything and everything, or him sharing interesting stories he had of the cases he was studying. After a couple of hours, she would get back to her books, leaving him to his work, until he came up to her around midnight to make her stop studying and get them both to bed.

It was during one such evening that Sai came and sat next to him and said, “Virat Sir…”

“Hmm…?”

“Aapse kuch poochna tha.”

Looking up at her hesitant tone, a rarity when it came to his firebrand wife, Virat asked in surprise, “Ye introduction kyu? Bol na..”

“Woh kya hai na, college aaj Dean Sir ne ek meeting bulwaye the, second year students ke. Waise bhi Final year aur House-surgeoncy batches active Covid duty me hai, toh abhi situation serious hote jaa rahe hain toh Voluntary basis me Second year students ko bhi bula rahe hai. Voluntary hai, compulsory nahi hai… toh mujhe aapse puchna tha…”, Sai drifted off, hesitating in completing the sentence she had blurted out in a rush.

His eyes widening in shock, Virat grabbed her hand, she was twisting in her lap, as she knelt next to him on the bed. “Sai… kya puch rahi ho tum?!”

Her face, which had been lit up with cautious excitement, dimmed, and she said, “Mai ye puchne wali thi ki aapko koi aitraaz na ho toh kya mai volunteer kar sakti hu. Maana mai doctor nahi hu, par logon ke sewa me kuch toh kar paati… aapko theek nahi laga toh nahi jaaungi, sorry. Waise bhi 3-day rotation me duty karni padti, 3 days in hospital fir 3 days off, waise. Ghar ka bhi kaam ka nuksaan ho jaayega… chodiye… Aap kaam kariye, main chalti hu.”

Pulling her back as she moved to get up, Virat looked at her earnestly, “Nahi Sai, I am sorry! Really, really sorry! Agar humare shaadi ke dedh saal baad bhi tumhe aisa laga ki tumhari career ke koi bhi decision lene se pehle mujhse permission lene ki zaroorat hai, toh I have failed as your husband, Sai.”

“Arre, aap ye kya bol rahe hai!”

“Shh… mujhe bolne dogi?”

Nodding sheepishly, Sai waited quietly, as he went ahead, “Sai, mai humesha tumse tumhari raai maangta hu na, career ke koi bhi decision se pehle, lekin final decision me hi leta hu. Toh tum se mai koi alag expectation kaise rakh sakta hu?”

Holding her dear face in both palms, he said, “Kabhi bhi permission mat maangna, Sai. Maine tumhe apne padhaayi me, career me, zindagi me saath dene ka wada kiya hai, aur hamesha dunga, salah dunga, raai dunga, kabhi bhi interfere nahi karunga, theek hai? Aur ghar ka toh tum socho hi mat! Desh ki, logon ki sewa le liye mai jab jaata hu, mai aur kuch nahi sochta na? Tumhe bhi aise karne ka pura haq hai! Aai sambhaal legi, garv se!”

Eyes tearing up, Sai nodded, before grabbing her Virat Sir in a quick bear hug, and proceeding to explain how her rotation would work. Hiding his worry at how his young wife would be in first contact with seriously ill patients, but accepting it as the necessary risk in her chosen career, just as she did everyday that he went out on his dangerous job, Virat sat listening, figuring out how he would be able to help in any way possible.

As they settled down to sleep, in their customary pose of his one arm behind his head, and the other wrapped around his wife as she lay with her head tucked between his neck and shoulder, he asked, “Kab se hai ye duty?”

Playing with the button on his kurta, Sai replied, “Active duty toh ek mahine ke baad. Volunteers ko kal hi first dose of Vaccine diya jaayega, second dose chaar hafte baad hi denge. Tab tak data entry work hi karna hai. Lekin college hours ke baad.”

Looking up at him, she said, “Toh ghar aane me der ho jaayegi roz.”

Stroking her hair, Virat sighed, “Sai…. kaha na maine, duty me join kiya toh bus kiya, baaki sab secondary hai. Bus apna schedule set hone par bata dena mujhe taaki main tumhe wapis aate waqt pick kar paaun. Humare schedules na match karenge, assan padega tumhe bhi.”

Overwhelmed at the support and understanding she was getting from this Khadoos Jasoos of hers, Sai leaned up on one elbow, and looked down at him, unable to put into words all that she wanted to say.

Smiling up at her softly, Virat tucked a bit of hair that had come loose and said, “Jaanta hu… jab mai apne koi bhi mission par nikalte waqt tum mujhe see-off karti ho na, toh aisa hi kuch expression aata hoga mere chehre par bhi, hai na?” and pulled her back down, tucking her safely next to him.

Wow you have written it so beautifully. All of those worries are so real and true. Getting worried for the loved one, or hesitating talking to loved oneabout the duties, everything was so relatable.

amazing❤️ waiting for the next part

Really loved this second update as well. This is the life of frontline workers in every dangerous situation. And in this kind of situation, what matters most us the love and understanding and also support from their loved ones. You have framed that aspect really well here Aparna.

It's beautifully written and loved it so much 🤩❤

Oh this was SO beautiful! I love how Sai is so keen to volunteer even though its not compulsory and Virat is such a supportive partner. I love the part where he says you dont need my "permission". Spouses share their life with each other so they should obviously keep the other in the loop, inform each other, take suggestions but at the end of the day they are 2 individuals who need to make their own decisions.

I'm glad that its longer than you planned/expected but problem is I hate waiting for the next update. I have no patience 🙈 now i will keep on refreshing to check if you updated the next part.
