It is a two part story now, Part 1, below.

Part 1

A night of pouring rain, the young man sat patiently, knowing how schedules might extend, emergencies might crop up, and his wife might not get a second’s break to make a call and inform.

He just hoped she had seen his message that he will be picking her up today, not hitch the usual ambulance ride. With mobile data non-dependable inside the hospital, the sole mode of communication if she couldn’t take calls was SMS, and he hadn’t no way to know if she had seen it or not.

Patience, thy name is Virat Chavan.

Virat had been waiting outside the hospital for close to an hour now. Peering through the windshield and not able to make out much, he got his umbrella and got out, deciding to stretch his legs and walk up to the porch.

Watching the goings on quietly, occasionally checking his phone to see if there is any reply, Virat was surprised to see his wife’s face smiling up at him as he received her call.

His smile too breaking out as it always did seeing her DP, Virat picked up, “Dr. Sai Joshi Chavan, aapka driver haazir hai neeche!”

Her quick laugh flowing through, Sai replied, “Sorry Virat Sir, aapko itna intezaar karna pada. Itni busy thi ki phone abhi abhi haath me li aur aapka message dekh liya. Arre baba, itna kyu taqleef uthaya? Aapka bhi kitni tight schedule chal rahi hai? Ghar jaake thoda toh aaraam karte! Khadoos IPSwala! Kabhi nahi sochte apne sehad ke baare me! Manmaani karte rehte hai!”

Laughing out loud at the typical Sai Joshi style lighting quick changes in the tone of conversation, where she started happily, moved over to concern for his health and ended at her yelling at him in irritation, Virat replied, “Arre meri Gadchiroli Express, shaant! Ab toh mai aa hi gaya, aur neeche wait bhi kar raha hu, toh chalne ki kripa keejiye mere saath.”

Grinning at the ‘hmmpphh’ that sounded across the lines, he continued, “Tum nikal paaogi abhi? Mai wait karoonga, Sai, koi jaldi nahi hai. Aaj toh tumhe apne saath ghar leke jaane ka bohot mann kar raha hai, Sai, mana mat karo, please?”

The quiet affection radiating from her husband’s voice undoing her as always, Sai replied, “Ji, aa rahi hu. Dus minute deejiye, change karke disinfect hoke aati hu. Aapne gaadi me saare arrangements kiya hai na?”

“Yes, ma’am! Aapke instructions to the T follow kiya hai! Aap bus aa jaayiye”, voice softening, he continued, “Aankhein taras gayi, Sai, jaldi aa jao.”

“Meri bhi… abhi aayi!”

Cutting the call, Virat looked around. It was already around midnight, and only the security staff and orderlies on standby for emergency arrival were the only people present, except for another man, waiting apparently, from his phone conversation.

Eyes glued to the doors, he was delighted to see Sai walk out hardly 10 minutes later, together with another lady, a fellow doctor. Her huge smile breaking out seeing him, evident even above the mask covering three-fourths of her face, from how her eyes lit up, she rushed forward, coming to a stop at the mandatory 10 feet distance, much to his distress.

Pouting under his own mask, Virat sighed, knowing that his reaction wouldn’t have gone unnoticed by his wife.

She suddenly turned back to the doctor with her, and noticing her talking to the other man waiting, gestured for Virat to move forward to meet them. Introductions done, the doctor being Sai’s resident mentor, and all of them eager to get home, they waved the other couple good night and Virat automatically reached for her bag.

Leaping back, Sai exclaimed, “Virat Sir!”

“Oops! Bhool gaya mai, sorry!”

“Aap bhi na! Aapki na, mujhe bohot chinta hoti hai! Aap duty ke waqt bhi aise laaparvahi karte ho kya? Apne safety ko leke?” Sai grumbled, motioning at him to walk forward.

Thankfully, the rain had softened down to a drizzle, seeing how Virat had only one umbrella.

“Nahi baba, mai dhyaan rakhta hoon, distance maintain karne par. Bas tumhe dekhke na, work mode se home mode me aa jaata hu na, iss liye bhool gaya. Ab aao naa, jaldi chalte hai ghar. Poore teen din ho gaye tumhe dekhke, baithke fursat se tumhare saath khana khaake, do baatein karke Mahadev jaane kitne din ho gaye!”

Turning around suddenly, Virat said softly, “I miss you, Sai.”

Eyes welling up involuntarily, a mixture of exhaustion, love and stress all playing havoc on her emotions, Sai replied, without her usual fire, “Mai bhi aapko bohot miss karti hu, Virat Sir. Humare roz ki routine ko miss karti hu.”

Nodding his head at that, he turned back to walk up to their car and proudly opened the door to show how he had fixed the plastic partition in between the front and back seats, and motioning for her to enter, he got into the driver’s seat, rolled down the windows, and took off, as soon as his wife closed her door, eager to get home.
