Part 22

Reetu came back in with a piece of paper in her hand. "Chalo catering
service ka number."
Saraswati took the piece of paper from Reetu and stared at it. "Teak hai
main phone karti hoon, nahin aap phone karogi, nahin main, nahin
aap...mujhe nahin pata...kya karoon?"
"Oho Choti Sahiba....problem kya hai...number kyun chaaye tha?"
"Dekho Reetu zyaada sawaal na poocho...mujhe acha nahin lagta...chup
chaap beto...jab mujhe kuch samaj aayega ....main aapko bata doongi."
"Teak hain."
"Reetu yeh number phone karke kaho ke aap Garodia ghar se phone kari
ho or aap Shitij se baat karna chaati ho..or phir jab Shitij line par
aayega..usse kaho key aap Mrs. Garodia baat kari hain ...or aapke paas
woh khat hai or aap bhot ghusse main hai."
"Nahin yeh mujhse nahin hoga!"
"Reetu aap mere liye itna bhi nahin karsak thi. Teak hai dafa ho jao."
"Teak hai....karti hoon...phone doh."
"Yeah!!! Reetu tum sach mein bhot achi ho!!!!"
Saraswati dialed the number and put the phone on speaker. She handed it
to Reetu and covered her mouth.
"Hello, Kumar catering service...how can I help you?"
"Jee main Garodia ghar sey baat kari hoon....Shitij Sahib sey baat karni
thi."
"Please hold." Saraswati smiled, she hoped her plan would work.

"Hello? Main Shitij bolra hoon...aap kaun?"
"Jee main Mrs. Garodia baat kari hoon."
"Mrs Garodia.. bolye main aap ke liye kya karsak tha hoon?" Saraswati
started to giggle..Shitij was so gullible.
"SHHH!!" Reetu gave Saraswati a mean look. On the other end of the
phone Shitij had recognized the laugh Saraswati's laugh and smiled.'Is
Saraswati ka main ilaaj karoonga.'
"Mrs. Garodia?"
"Haan Shitij woh main kehna waali thi..."
"Mrs. Garodia baat yeh hain key main thori dher main aap ke ghar aara
hoon check uthane ke liye..toh main aapko tab milta hoon. Bye."
Shitij hung up the phone and smiled.
Reetu hung up and looked at Saraswati, " Oh no woh toh yahan aara hai."
"Nahin Reetu usse pata chal gaya tha..key aap Maa nahin bolri...koi ore
bolri ho. Woh bluff kara tha."
"REETU KAHAN MAR GAYE HO?" Menka called from downstairs.
"Oho main chalti hoon." Reetu ran out of the room.

Yuvraj was coming back from Shazeb's house when he saw Shazeb
coming with bags in his hand. "Yuvraj aap yahan kya kare ho?"
"Shazeb main aap se milne aaya tha or Fatima ne bataya tha key aap ghar
par nahin ho. Kahan gaye the?"
"Bazaar gaya tha...EId ki shooping karne."
"EId? Woh kya hota hai."
"Eid ka nahin suna? Kal aana hamre ghar ..main aapko dekhaoonga."
"Haan zaroor aaonga...kuch khas kapre pehne parega?"
"Betar yeh hi hoga."
Chalo teak hai...kal milte hain."

Durga sat in her room and looked out her window. Her mom walked into
her room and put her hand on her shoulder. Durga turned around
startled.
"Beta subah se kuch nahi kaya. Neeche aake kuch kaa lo."
"Nahin Maa mujhe bhook nahin hai."
"Main Reetu ke boloon ke kaana yahan lekar aaye."
"Nahin...mujhe bhook nahin hain."
"Teak hai beta." Savitri stood there and watched Durga. She wondered
what went on in Durga's mind.
"Savitri!"
"Teak hai Durga main jaati hoon...aapke Papa bula re hai."
Savitri walked towards her Suryakant's study.
"Aapne bulaya?"
"Haan woh aaj raat business dinner hai...aap mere saath jaogi." Savitri was
always asked to attend these business dinners because she was was used
to it. Coming from an influential family...she knew how to behave at the
dinners. Menka on the other hand was never asked. She always wanted to
go but she was never asked. And this was another reason Menka could
not stand Savitri.
"Teak hai."Menka who was walking by had overheard their conversation
and barged into the room.
"Yahan kya hora hai?"
"O Menka main abhi Savitri ko kehra tha key aaj raat ek dinner hai or woh
mere saath jayegi."
"O chalo achi baat hai..main toh vaise busy hoon." Menka turned and left
the room angrily.

PART 23

The same night:
Savitri stood in her room and got dressed. She looked beautiful in her
turquoise and gold sari. Someone knocked at the door and she turned to
look
" Saraswati? Laxmi? Yuvraj? Durga? Aap log yahan kya kareho?"
"Wow Bari Maa, you look hot."
"Badmaash!" She started to laugh.
"Haan Maa..Yuvraj sey kehra hai...par hot nahin beautiful...aap bhot achi
lagra hi hain." Saraswati put her hand on her mother's shoulder.
"Thanx Beta...chaahe kuch bhi ho..mujhe ye business dinners bilkul ache
nahin lagte."
"Kyun?" Laxmi looked surprised.
"Samjho key....."
"Savitri!!!! Chale?" Suryakant called from downstairs.
"Oh main chalti hoon." Savitri rushed out of the room with the kids
following.
Saraswati sighed." Jab main Bhavishya ke saath shaadi karoongi toh main
bhi issi tarah business dinners pey jaongi."
"Oho Di...Bhavishya ne abhi tak shaadi ka kuch kaha?"
"Nahin...pata nahin kyun...shayed woh mujhse shaadi nahin karna chaata.
Canada jaane se pehle us ne kaha key wapas aake shaadi karenge par ab
woh wapas aaya hai or usne bola key jaise hum hain teak hain or shaadi
key baad log badalte hai. Maine toh usse milne jaari thi aaj..par Papa ney
mujhe baar jaane se mana kiya tha. Chalo choro main uske baare main
baa nahin karna chaati.Terrace pey chale?"
"Haan chalte hain." Yuvraj unlocked the door to the staircase that lead
them to the highest roof. Laxmi grabbed Durga's hand and they all went
upstairs. Saraswati and Yuvraj raced to the swing and sat down. Laxmi
and Durga sat on the chairs across.
"Kal EId hai." Yuvraj looked up slowly, he wanted to talk to his sisters
about going and this was the only way he knew had to bring it up.
"EId? Toh hum kya kare?" Saraswati smiled.
"Nahin main vaise kehra tha. Shazeb mujhe bata ra tha."
"Oh Shazeb? Kaise hai woh?"
"Teak hain...actually woh mujhe kehra tha..key aap EId ke din pey hamare
ghar aana." Yuvraj looked down embarassed.
"Yuvraj is mein sharmaane wali kya baat hai? Tum kal jao."
"Jao..nahin Di...main kaise jao?"
"Kya matlab tumhe jaana chaaye...woh aapka dost hai..or usne aapko
bulaya hai. Vaise bhi Eid hamare Diwali sey kam toh nahin hai."
"Hum bhi chale?" Laxmi sat up excited.
"Laxmi..hum kaise jaa sakte hai....sirf Yuvraj jayega."
"Nahin Di...aap log bhi aana...bhot maza aayega...please."
"Haan DI please."
Saraswati thuught hard. "Well Papa se poochna parega or agar woh haan
kahenge phir jayenge."
"Yay!!! Chalo neeche jaake kapre choose karte hain." They all ran towards
the stairs.
Gauri ran back down as fast as she could into her room. She had
overheard the converstaion between her brother and sisters and was
deciding what to do. " Choti Maa ko bataoon..yaa Papa? Hmm mushkil
kaam hai...sochna parega."

Menka saw Yuvraj and the girls together and came into Laxmi's room.
"Yuvraj?! Yahan par aao."
"Kya hua Mama?"
"Mujhe kuch shelf se chaaye or mera haath nahin lagra...aap mujhe help
karsak te hain."
"Maa main busy hoon." Yuvraj saw Reetu walk by in the hallway. "Reetu?"
"Reetu stopped dead in her tracks and blushed. She turned around slowly.
"Gee?"
"Jaake Mama ko help karo."
Reetu was embarassed about what she had been thinking. "Teak hai."
"Yuvraj Beta agar mera haath nahin laga toh iska haath kaise lage ga?"
"Mama yeh ladder istemaal karsak te hai...jao Reetu." Yuvraj turned
around.
Menka looked on helplessly as Gauri walked up behind her. "Oho CHoti
Maa...main toh aapko bara smart samajthi thi...par lagta hai key main
ghalat hoon. Choti Maa kuch aisa kaam kardo key Yuvraj ko aapki
zaroorat chaaye ho or apke paas aay. Not so you have to go to him.
Samjhe?"
"Haan Gauri..tum se kehri ho...chalo mere saath."

Later that night:
Everyone had decided what clothes they were going to wear and were now
waiting for Suryakant and Savitri to come home so they could ask. As
soon as they entered the door Yuvraj went to them.
"Papa..Bari Maa? Kya kal main Saraswari, Laxmi or Durga ko leke baar jaa
sakta hoon?"
Savitri slowly nodded but kept quiet as she waitied for Suryakants reply.
"Yuvraj tum akele nahin jaa sakte?"
"Papa mujhe bot acha lage ga agar woh mere saath chale. Please Papa."
Everyone knew that no matter how much Suryakant and Menka tried to
keep Yuvraj away from his sisters...they could never say no to him either.
"Teak hai...woh aapke saath jaa sakte hai."
"Thank you Papa..thank you Bari Maa." He ran up the stairs to tell his
sisters.

PART 24
The next morning:
Yuvraj,Laxmi,Saraswati,and Durga came down the stairs in their nice
clothes hoping that they could just go out without being questioned. But
where Menka and Gauri are there's always trouble. Menka and Gauri sat in
the living room watching a serial called Maayka. Menka looked up to see
the girls and Yuvraj heading towards the door. She smiled at Gauri.
"Yuvraj?"
Yuvraj sighed,"Haan Mama?"
"Kahan jaara he ho?"
"Mama..Papa ne hum sabko kehdiya hai ke hum jaa sakte hain...Gauri aap
hamare saath jaana chaati ho?"
Gauri shook her head no and turned back to the t.v.
"Mujhe pata hai Beta...par main Maa hoon mujhe toh fikar aati hai
aapki...bataona Beta kahan jaara he ho?"
"Mama woh..actually....um..."
"Choti Maa..ek cultural show pey jaare hain."Saraswati quickly stepped in
to help her brother.
"Haan Mama..cultural show."
"Oh cultural show? Itne sajh dajh ke? Kuch khaas show hoga?"
"Haan...Mama hum chale?"Yuvraj was surprised that his mom had so far
not tried to keep the girls home.
"Ek minute Beta..main abhi aayi." Menka turned around, winking at Gauri
before she went into the study. She came back with a camera.
"Yuvraj ...aapko show ki photos leni chaaye."
"Nahin Mama...main nahin lena chaata...kya hum ab jaa sakte hain?"
Menka looked towards the door. "Beta abhi toh sirf 7:00 hain..show itni
jaldi shuru hoga?"
"Nahin Mama...par agar hum late gaye...toh ache seats nahin
milenge...isleeyay humain nikalna chaaye."
"Yuvraj woh..." Someone rang the bell and Menka smiled." Haaye itni
subah subah kaun ho sakta hai? Gauri jaake darwaza kolo."
Gauri headed to the door and opened it. "Aap ..aap yahan kya kari ho?"
Yuvraj turned around to see who it was but Gauri was blocking his view.
The person at the door looked confused. "Woh Menka Aunty ne mujhe
khud bulaya hai."
Gauri tried to hide the answer. "Chalo chodo baat.Aap andhar aaye."
Menka looked up. "Tina aap yahan?" Menka tried to act surprised.
"Menka Aunty aap ne khud..."
"Wow kya baat hai...ek minute Tina aap busy toh nahin ho aaj?"
"Nahin Auntyjee."
"Yuvraj..Gauri ke jaga aap Tina ko saath kyun nahin leke jaate?"
Yuvraj looked up angrily. It all made sense now...his mom had just been
stalling them until Tina came. "Nahin Maa..mujhe nahin lagta ke Tina ko
maza aayega...you know she's from London toh isleeyay isse culture ka
kya pata hai?"
"Isleeyay toh jaana chaaye...apne sanskar seekne. Tina aap bhi jaogi."
"Auntyjee main cultural show mein aise nahin jaa sakti." Tina looked
down at her jeans and t-shirt.
"Oho is ghar mein ladkiya kam hai kya?..itne saare kapre hain. Laxmi
jaake koi ache se kapre Tina ko doh."
Laxmi nodded."Aao Tina.
Yuvraj was angry he hated set-ups.
Half an hour later Tina came down with Laxmi. She looked very beautiful
in her ghagra choli. She walked up to Saraswati and Durga and smiled.
"Ab toh main bilkul aapki behen jaise lagti hoon. Am i right?"
Saraswati touched Tina's should. "Aap toh hamaari behen hi ho."
They all headed out the door with Gauri and Menka seeing them off.
Saraswati, Durga and TIna were walking slightly ahead of Yuvraj and
Laxmi. Laxmi pulled Yuvraj back. "Yuvraj...Tina bhot achi ladki hai..aapko
usse ek chance dena chaaye."Laxmi ran up ahead to be with the girls
leaving an angry Yuvraj behind. They all got into the car. Yuvraj was
driving with Saraswati beside him. The other three girls sat in the back.
"Toh cultural show kahan par hai?" Tina looked out the window excitedly.
Laxmi laughed." Oho Tina hum cultural show pe nahin jaare..humne toh
cultural show ka bahana kiya hai..taake hm Eid pe jaa sakein."
Yuvraj looked into the rearview mirror."Haan Tina or agar aap ghar jaana
chaati hain..toh i understand."
"Nahin Yuvraj..EId manane main bhi aaongi."

They reached Shazeb's house soon enough and rang the bell. Maryam
threw open the door and smiled."Yuvrah Bhai! Itni dher lagaay
tumne..hum sab aapka intezaar kare the.Aaye aaye." Yuvraj entered the
house with the girls following.He introduced Maryam, Shazeb and thier
parents to his sisters and Tina.
"Sach mein beta humein bhot acha laga key aap hamaare saath EId
manane aaye hain." Shazeb's mom smiled.
Everyone was talking and laughing but Yuvraj could not focus, his eyes
searched for Fatima. Finally she came out from the corner room. Yuvraj
felt surprisingly like a groom feasting his eyes for the first time on his
bride. Fatima looked like a delicate angel in her pink lengha. Yuvraj
started to daydream.

Yuvraj snapped out of it and stood up. "Um yeh Fatima hai....Shazeb ki
behen..or Fatima...yeh meri behene hai, Saraswati, Laxmi or Durga. Or
yeh Tina hai...umm...inki saheli."
"Toh chale?" SHazeb gestured towards the door.

Later on that day:
Yuvraj walked towards Fatima at the meena bazaar wear she was trying
on churiyan."Fatima...aap bhot achi lagri hain."
"Thanks Yuvraj." She turned the other way shyly. Yuvraj smiled and
walked off. Tina had been watching from the other stall and walked over
to Fatima. "Yuvraj kitne ache hai na?"
Fatima nodded.
"Main toh bhot khush hoon me merin unke saath shaadi hone waali hai."
Fatima looked up surprised." Oh mujhe nahin pata tha...Yuvrak ne kabhi
zikar hi nahin kiya."
"Haan aapko toh pata hai ke ladke kaise hote hai. Oh shawls. Main abhi
aaye." Tina turned and walked away.
Fatima stood their in thought."Jo bhi sapne the ...saare toot gaye...main
bhi kitni stupid thi...Yuvraj itna high class ka ladka hai..or main
toh...shayad sey hua hai...Allah nahin chaata tha ke main ek Hindu se
shaadi karoon...chalo jo bhi hai."

Shazeb stood watching Laxmi and Durga at the jewelry stall. Laxmi was
busy trying on earrings with Durga watching quietly. Occasionally Durga
would nod her head no or yes. "Pata nahin kyun yeh itni chup rehti hai?"
Saraswati who had walked up behind Shazeb had heard his question.
"Hamari Durga shock main hai."
Shazeb turned around embarassed. "Saraswati woh main yuheen dekh ra
tha...key yeh aap dono se kaafi alag hai..kya main jaan sakta hoo..ke kis
hadsaa ne isse aisa kardiya hai."
"Rape...kisi ne Durga ko rape kiya tha jab yeh 13 saalon ki thi. Shazeb
main aapko batari hoon..isleeyay mujhe pata hai ke aap imandaar hai...or
kabhi bewafaai nahin karsakte...kaash Durga ki duniya mein koi farishta
aaye khushiyan leke...you know she's a sweet girl...and a beautiful
dancer...par hadse ke baad sab kuch chor diya ..muskuraana bhi."
"Saraswati aake mujhe please help karo. I don't understand anything."
Tina grabbed Saraswati's hand adn dragged her away. Saraswati turned
back and smiled at Shazeb.
"Aap fikar na karo Saraswati woh farishta aa gaya hai...or main hi Durga ki
zindagi mein phir se roshni laonga."
