Hi fellow members,
Sorry for not posting a regular discussion of the week, due to work commitments, I haven't been able to dedicate much time to the forum. However, these will be weekly from now on, hopefully all members will participate and make these discussions lively.
I pondered for a long time over what to discuss, so much has happened over the past month in Betiyaan, but I think Saraswati's situation is most interesting at this moment.
She has quietly suffered heinous abuse at her husband's hand, been forced to return to the monster, and now he has attempted to burn her alive, which would have been fatal if not for Kshitij.
To add insult to her injury, Saraswati has not seen justice done - instead of Bhavisya being jailed, Kshitij has been incarcerated for a crime he did not commit! Saraswati has been left with horrendous scars, and a promise from Bhavisya that her life will be miserable henceforth.
So my questions are:
- What do you see in the future for Saraswati? Bhavisya has vowed never to divorce her, or accept her as his wife. What can she possibly do? Being a married daughter living in her parent's house is a fate worse than death, as depicted in the serial. Can she gather some strength to fight against her circumstances?
- Bhavisya: will justice be served? For committing two henious deeds, surely he has some retribution coming? Can he possibly continue to live peacefully having ruined the lives of two innocent women? Is this typical of the mindset this serial attempts to portray - a man can commit any crime, but its the woman who suffers the consequences. With his demented state of mind, will Bhavisya not eventually crack? Initially I thought his murdering his ex-gf was a crime of passion, but it now seems that it was pre-mediated.
- Saraswati's family: Menka surely will have something up her sleeve to get rid of Saraswati. What could this possibly be? Did Menka push Saraswati down the stairs? Will Menka perhaps push Saraswati towards the edge mentally? Will Menka be instrumental in Saraswati breaking down, and perhaps attempting to commit suicide?
- Is this not typical of the climate and acceptability of abuse against women that is currently prevalent in the world? As much as we trivialise stories in serials, it is a harsh reality that this type of abuse is a daily occurrence in the lives of women the world over EVEN TODAY. How does a woman in Saraswati's position rebuild her life?
My personal take on the situation:
The perpetration of abuse is not random, if Saraswati was/is able to stand up against Bhavisya, she might not be in this predicament. This is due to her upbringing, and her parents should shoulder the blame.
Savitri has redeemed herself marginally in my eyes, by forcing Surya and co to take action against Bhavisya, however it was too little too late. Saraswati will now however be affected by the terrible mistake in judgement her father made.
It was also good to see Surya supporting Saraswati, but also too little too late. Instead of bowing to pressure from his mother, and placing society values above his daughter's life, he should have listened to his inner voice and kept Saraswati at home.
I am very happy that the creators of this show have brought this contentious issue to the attention of millions of viewers. I am still holding out for a happy ending to this, the sight of Bhavisya behind bars where he belongs, and Kshitij taking his place rightfully beside Saraswati!
Lets have your responses then!
