Induction

She dragged herself down the hallway, not sure if she really felt so sober. I am sick. I need to see a psychiatrist. I am sick. I am sick…The voices in her head were uncontrollable, and they were the sole purpose of her boisterous headache. She walked up to the front desk where a young nurse sat chatting away with yet another nurse. As soon as she saw her, she said, "You're here to see Dr. Pathak?" As the woman nodded, the young nurse continued, "Alright, would you please fill out this form and the take a seat, please?" The depressed-looking lady took the papers back to a seat. As she looked over it, she couldn't control her tears. Droplets of water now deluged her papers. She stood up, put the papers on her seat, and wiped her tears. Choking back tears, she went up to the nurse. "I-I'll come back la-later. Thanks" With that, she ran out. The nurses shrugged, giving each other confused glances. What a freak show, they thought.

"Why do you even come to college, if you think it's useless, Vicky?" a pale-skinned girl chirped, while taking a sip, from her tall drink. "Who said I go to college?" Vicky said, smirking back at her, "I go to the college campus." She glared at him. "You haven't been going to any classes? WHY?! You realize you're not graduating, don't you?" He stared at her, and then broke into laughter. "What's your point, Sonia?" With that, he snatched her drink and took a sip. Handing it back to her, he was off. Another day, another dollar…Hah! More like another day, another nothing! He laughed at his situation, at his thoughts…and thought of what this long day should have awaiting him.

Part 1

Vicky looked down the road. What to do, what to do…Man am I hungry. He strolled into a corner deli, whistling. Then he skimmed the bags of chips on the shelves directly behind the man at the counter. Pointing at one of the bags, he said, "Can I get that one please?" Then he shuffled through his pockets looking for some money. There must be some cash somewhere here.

As he continued his search as well as his whistling, a hand reached out from behind him. "Here, I'm paying for him and myself. Two bags of chips," said a woman, bags underlining her eyes giving her a dejected, dismal look. As she was handed the chips, she shoved one in Vicky's hands, and promptly walked out the doors. Vicky situated there for a second, trying to comprehend what just happened. Then, devoid of a second consideration, he rushed out the doors. "Ma'am! Ma'am!" Yet she would not look back, which motivated him to sprint even faster. As he caught up to her, he said "Hold up, let me pay you back." She scowled at him. "Look kid, two things! First and foremost, do I look old enough to be your ma'am? Secondly, if I wanted you to pay me back I would ask for the money right there. Now Vicky looked at her, confused. "But I don't know why you would pay for me in th-" She halted him midway by declaring calmly, "I don't know either."

The young girl put on her glasses, and emerged herself deeply in the papers she was holding. Ah, back to the courtroom! A nervous client, a strong case…the usual. She smiled at her thoughts, and then glanced over at her client. He was anxious, alright…sweat streaming down his temples. He took a section of his collar and pulled at his tie, taking off pressure on his also perspiring neck. When he realized his lawyer was staring at him, he smiled back at her. "Neha ji, we will win this case, right?" She gave him a self-assured grin. "Judging on the fact that I think you are being honest and your side of the story makes a robust argument, I would say that we will. Now calm down, Mr. Oberoi." With that, she handed him a tissue. He took it, smiled at her, and then wiped his forehead. You heard her, we'll win this.

Part 2

Now with his open bag off chips, Vicky followed the woman, while chewing on his chips. For the past few minutes, she went on a mindless rant about her uncompleted marriages and her ruined love life. "Now, I'm not good at giving any sort of counseling or advice. But, you know," Vicky said, talking for the first time in a long time, "If you're having so many problems in your life, you should consult a psychiatrist." The woman now raged again. "Where do you think I just came from? Can't you see, I'm too emotional. That's why I left before meeting the doctor! I would have probably embarrassed myself there anyways." Then she stiffened her face, but her new taut face was barely recognizable. Who would have thought one could look so different by a change of mood! "Actually," she continued, "I don't even need a psychiatrist! I'm fine! I am entirely okay…It's them I tell you! All those guys who failed to understand me!" Oh man, Vicky. What did you get yourself into…This woman is eccentric. Vicky thought. "Um, you're right actually. You seem like a pleasant young lady, and I don't understand why in the world a man would leave you, Ms…um-" With that, she quickly replied, "Devika" And he continued, "Yes Devika ji…as I was saying, why would anyone do that? Must be a bunch of spineless bums!" Before he could prolong his speech, she burst out into tears. She rushed by to a large rock on the side of the street and sat on it, weeping. "Is there no one that's right for me? Is that what God wants?" Now Vicky felt bad, possibly guilty. Unfortunately, his culpability echelon was low was enough to force him to blurt out something he didn't even covet. "I'll find you the right man!"

Neha walked out of the courtroom and into the large scale of stairs. She sighed. Another long case done, and now its back home. When she spiraled down, Mr. Oberoi, from a distance shouted out, "Thank you so much!" She smiled back, as she walked into a taxi. "No need! It's my profession!" As she told the taxi driver where to take her, she took out her cell phone and made a quick call. "Hello…Mom? Yes, I'm coming home now…No I haven't seen him…I was in the courtroom, not on the streets!"
