CHAPTER 20
ALL THE NAMES & PLACES ARE FICTITIOUS (if any resemblance to persons & places is purely coincidental). Any MEDICAL PROCEDURES, MEDICAL TERMS, RELIGIOUS TERMS, Punjabi terms, architectural terms, IT terms & programs, hospital/office hierachy, wedding rituals, etc. are from my imagination hence THEY ARE NOT TRUE.
ALL THE PHOTOGRAPHS DOWNLOADED DO NOT BELONG TO ME BUT BELONG TO THE ORIGINAL UPLOADER. I HAVE JUST USED THEM AS THEY GO WITH MY STORY!
SIX DAYS LATER, KARVACHAUTH DAY at 07:00a.m.
Due to ill health and weakness for past five days, Anjali could not get up before sun rise therefore could not make or eat her Sargai ****, resulting in her being on fast without food and water since she woke up as it was Karvachauth. Six days back Anjali had fainted in Dhanvantri Hospital due to excessive bleeding during her periods. Since past eleven years every time Anjali is stressed or over worked her periods tend to be painful with excessive bleeding. When Dr. Vijayalakshmi examined Anjali and found what her condition was she ordered her complete bedrest for four days and granting a week of leave. Due to Anjali’s poor health Ram also could not talk to Ranjit.
Besides Ranjit and Savitri Devi were too busy looking after a cranky, irritable and disagreeable Maan at home. They say that “Doctors’ are the worst patients!” Maan was a living full proof of it. Finally one day Ranjit lost his patience and yelled at Maan, “Anjali ki bhi tabiyat kharab hai aur woh bhi doctors’ ke instructions par bedrest par hai magar woh aisa tamasha nahi kar rahi hai jaisa tum kar rahe ho. Agar tumhei apni boodhi Dadi aur boodhe pitah par thoda bhi taras ho toh yeh dekho ki iss umar mein woh dono tumhare jaaiz aur naajaaiz maangein poori karne ke liye pichle chaar dino se bass idhar-udhar bhag hi rahe hain. Hum dono heart patient hain, magar relax hone ke bajaaiye continously tense hain.” (Even Anjali is unwell and on bedrest on her doctor’s orders but she is not behaving like a spoilt brat that you are behaving. If you have any mercy on your old grandmother and middle aged father then see their age and health and see how much they are running to and fro to fulfill your whims and fancies. Have you ever realised that we both are heart patients and that too much of stress and tension is not good for us!) Then Ranjit left the room banging Maan’s room door in anger.

But first time it hit Maan home that his father and grandmother are not very strong as they are heart patients.
Vicky was busy with Shashank and Meera as Meera was to undergo her surgery for abnormal cancerous growth in her uterus. Since Meera had snapped at Anjali as well as agewise Meera and Anjali were similar age, Anjali backed off from Meera’s case and asked Dr. Vijayalakshmi to do Meera’s surgery using her resignation as an excuse much to Dr. Vijayalakshmi’s irritation. Dr. Vijayalakshmi was shocked and irritated when she had heard of Dr. Kavyanjali Mishra’s resignation first time. Unable to stop herself, after she was “off duty”, Dr. Vijayalakshmi went to Khurana Mansion to talk to the Chairman of Khurana Hospitals, Mrs. Savitri Devi Khurana. After pleasantries were over and Dr. Vijayalakshmi was served refreshments, Doctor broached the topic, “Ma’am excuse me for interfering in Hospital’s administrative work. But Ma’am currently Dhanvantri Hospitals’ Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department is understaffed. Experienced consulting doctors are only two in the hospital -- Anjali and me. There are only two ‘midwives’ whose experience is limited to handling simple and normal delivery cases. We have only one “Oncologist” which is Anjali. If Anjali leaves we are short of a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician as well as a Gynaecological Oncologist. I was planning to ask management to promote Anjali as “Deputy Head of Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department” but now with her resigning..........”

“Vijaya, I understand your problem but unfortunately I’ve tried.........” Savitri Devi narrated all that happened and her request to hold Anjali back with recompensation but nothing worked.
Dr. Vijayalakshmi thought for sometime and then said, “Ma’am, there is one way to prevent Anjali from leaving Khurana Hospitals.”
“What is that?”
“Why don’t you post her as Senior Gynaecologist in Suprabhat Hospital. That hospital is primarily a charity hospital for the underpriviledged. The hospital is only associated with prenatal care as well as Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department. Its also associated to Khuranas’ Nari Shakti Charity. Majority of young doctors don’t want to go there as there is limited money as well as less scope for their professional development. But Anjali is different, she joined field of medicine in order to help poor and needy not for earning money and social status.”
“I agree with you Vijaya but will it be safe for a young, beautiful and unmarried girl there alone?”
“I agree thats a problem. Maybe we can concise (limit) her working hours i.e. 10:00a.m. - 03:00p.m., three times a week or so!”
“Let me talk to Ranjit as well as Anjali’s father. You also do realise that there are only male doctors and paramedical staff are also primarily males in Suprabhat Hospital due to security reasons.”
“Yes I understand Ma’am. However, I would personally prefer her to be in Dhanvantri Hospitals or even in Khurana Hospitals in Gurugram branch rather than Suprabhat Hospital.” After sometime Dr. Vijayalakshmi left.
Maan was crossing the corridor near the inormal living room when he heard his grandmother and Dr. Vijayalakshmi’s conversation and was horrified at the thought of His Mishty going to Suprabhat Hospital. As it is he is having tough time keeping Geet (Anjali) away from lustful eyes of any male doctors, male nurses, ward boys and other paramedical male staff whom she encounters everyday. He still can’t forget when 54yr. old Dr. Subroto Banerjee, Gastroenterologist in Male ward had casually mentioned that how once Anjali had entered the male ward on his request to examine a suspicious growth on an 18yr. old boy’s abdomen. Initially there was pin drop silence followed by gasp by ward patients and then their hushed whispering seeing Anjali’s beauty. And how after her visit to the male ward, for quite few weeks she was sent flowers, chocolates, proposals and invites for dates through the matrons on duty in the male ward! Maan was now even more determined to see that His Mishty does not go anywhere near Suprabhat Hospital and decided to seriously talk to his grandmother and father about this.
Pitamber, Vaidehi and Yash decided to have their annual holiday in India at this time of the year. Besides on hearing about Savitri Deviji’s heart attack as well as Maan’s back injury they wanted to meet them. Therefore, they were now staying at Khurana Mansion and spending Karvachauth with Khuranas. Vaidehi being only woman who could do Karvachauth vrat, Savitri Devi made sargai for her while remembering her own bahu (daughter-in-law), Garima. It was decided that Khurana and Khanna family will go to one of the old Khurana Temples in Dhaula Kuan area of Delhi as it is in a secluded area with minimum devotees. Also its safe as well as its not far from main city.
Later in the day, Ram called Ranjit to ask him if he knew any temple which was safe and secluded as Anjali needs to do puja today there undisturbed. Ranjit gave the address of Khurana temple and said that they are also going there as his sister-in-law (Maan’s Mami) also has to do her puja and break her fast so Ram and Anjali can join them. Ram and Ranjit decided the time of meeting at the temple.
Whereas in evening before leaving for the temple, Ram made sure that Anjali wore a red bridal saree and did “solah shringaar” as instructed by Priya while going to the temple . When Anjali objected to it being over dressed like a bride, as she is still unmarried, Ram just said that she has to do it for her future husband. Ram also gave a surprised Anjali heavy broad gold bangles (kangans) to wear.
***** SARGAI
The sargi is essentially the pre-dawn meal that a married woman consumes before starting her Karva Chauth vrat (fast). A thali full of energising, auspicious dishes are presented to the daughter-in-law, in the hope that it will bless her and sustain her through the ordeal of the vrat. Sometimes, items like sindoor, sarees, etc are also sent along with the foods as another symbol of love and care. The sargi thali is, therefore, a celebration of the relationship between the saas (mother-in-law) and the bahu (daughter-in-law). Sargi thali includes — peni (a sweet made of milk and semolina), 10 methi mattis (sweet dry poori like delicacy)

and 10 puas (sweet pancake like delicacy). Fresh food includes paranthe, siwaiyain (vermicilli keer) or "sargai", dry-fruits, potato vegetable, poori, sweets etc. with it make up items i.e. mehendi, glass bangles, Mangalsutra, Tikka, Nose ring, bindi, sindoor, lipstick, rouge, kajal, eye-liner, mascara etc. According to in-laws status, mother-in-law also gives saree and piece of jewellery to her daughter-in-law.
