Chapter 115
“I brought this box of chocolates for our neighbours” Maan informed Geet as she walked out of the bedroom all changed, she’d slipped into a striped t-shirt and dark jeans. “I considered getting some sleeping pills” he grabbed Geet’s jacket and helped her into it.
“They could do with it” she told him offering a small smile tilting her head. She closed her eyes as he lowered his head and pressed a kiss on each eyelid and held her for a moment.
“Did you call dadima?” she asked recalling the text he’d received when they were out.
“I tried Vikrant first, he didn’t answer. I did try dadima’s phone once, there was no answer. I’m guessing they’re asleep now. It’s probably 2am over there now” he replied. “Ready?”
“Maybe call it a rain check?” she suggested lightly.
“And have them bulldoze through the door?” Maan responded lacing their fingers together and stepped out of their penthouse. He walked down the hallway a few feet until he reached Sanjana and Aditya’s door, he glanced at Geet briefly then knocked.
The door swung open, Aditya grinned widely.
“Hey neighbour!” he greeted. “Ooh you brought chocolates” he reached for the box.
“You’re supposed to watch your weight and diet” Sanjana yelled out from the kitchen.
“Welcome” Aditya rolled his eyes stepping back and allowing Maan and Geet to step inside. “Follow me into the kitchen, we’re an open plan floor” he informed gesturing to the kitchen, the dining room and the living area.
“Drink?” Sanjana asked pulling out the glasses from the cupboard and the wine bottles.
As if they’re not crazy enough, they’re drinking Maan murmured softly to which Geet had only heard. “No thanks” he answered catching his wife biting down her smile.
“Dinner will be ready soon” Sanjana informed as she poured a glass of red wine in her glass. “Aditya made the potato salad” she grinned and sipped her drink.
“And my pookie bear watched” Aditya responded teasingly.
“No steak then?” Maan asked.
“Oh steak is definitely coming” Sanjana answered then grinned as the door swung open.
Glancing over their shoulder, in walked Samir and his wife Taz.
Not 2 Amelias, there’s 4 of them Maan thought inwardly and glanced at Geet who seemed amused.
The two neighbours didn’t seem to have noticed as they walked in cursing.
“Hey Topaz!” Sanjana waved.
“F*ck you blue balls” Taz scowled. “You’re here drinking and you couldn’t even help with dessert”
“I hate you as well” Samir joined his wife.
“You’re on the bottom of my hot metre” Sanjana tossed angrily.
“Eyes off my husband” Taz hissed.
“Let’s keep the peace here now” Aditya intervened.
“You’re supposed to be on our side” Samir told Aditya, “She done the inviting but backed out when it came to the cooking”
“You even think of siding with them, I’m going to kick you out of my life” Sanjana pointed her finger at her boyfriend then glanced over at her friend. “And I didn’t do the cooking for you because if I cooked the steak you wouldn’t have been able to eat” she reminded.
“Hey, you could’ve got halal meat from anywhere!” Taz defended. “And cooked it”
“Maybe we should do a rain check on this dinner…” Maan spoke up.
“I did not do all this cooking for you to do a rain check” Taz turned towards the guests. She arched her brows in amusement and smirked as she recognised their dinner guests. “Mr hands not made for cooking…” she cheekily smiled.
“You know him?” Samir turned to his wife.
“Mmhmm…” she nodded perusing Maan, he’d dressed in a crisp black dress shirt and black jeans. “You dress up really nice as well” she approved.
“I’m in the room” Samir stepped in front of Taz arching his brows.
She shrugged and looked over at Geet. “Hey, once you both learn cooking I’m expecting an invite”
Do they all invite themselves over? Geet mumbled looking over at her husband.
Once I get a hold of Aditya, I’m going to wring his neck Maan thought wondering what the hell he was in for.
“Let’s eat, I’m hungry” Aditya interrupted.
“Your steak is here” Samir placed the tray down followed by Taz placing down a bowl of coleslaw, a plate of sweet potato fries. She then walked over placing the last plate in the fridge telling everyone it was their dessert then joined them in the dining area.
“Here’s your red bull” Aditya handed Samir his drink then looked at Maan and Geet. “We’ve got cola, lemonade, orange juice…”
“I’m fine with water, thank you” Maan answered.
“Me too” Geet added.
“So… you guys from around here?” Taz asked curiously.
“We moved from India” Maan replied.
“We’re from India” Sanjana piped in. “Well… my parents are, they moved here when I was little”
“What part of India are you from?” she asked.
“Delhi”
“Okay, I think we got the picture” Samir interrupted. “You’re both neighbours now back at your country as well”
“He’s from Mars bars” Sanjana scowled.
“How’s the steak?” Taz questioned.
“It’s really nice” Geet smiled.
“My husband cooked it” she informed proudly, “once you have those weekend classes under your belt, I’m sure Mr hands not for cooking will make a decent meal” she winked.
“It’s Khurana” Maan corrected.
“Once you start cooking Mr HNFC” she grinned. Geet coughed covering up her laugh and grabbed her glass of water sipping.
“What’s this HNFC?” Sanjana asked curiously.
“Nothing” Maan cleared his throat narrowing his eyes on Taz.
Taz murmured something in a completely different language that Geet nor Maan didn’t understand and from the looks on Aditya and Samir, it seemed they both had no clue as they rolled their eyes at their respective partners.
“They made up this secret language” Aditya informed glancing up at the confused couple.
“We’re the brains as you can tell” Sanjana glowered at her boyfriend. “Moving on… who’d like dessert?” she asked. “I wouldn’t recommend it, Topaz cooked it. You might find a hair or two” she winked.
“Don’t make me punch that fugly face of yours, blue balls” Taz warned.
“Says the Topaz” Sanjana laughed.
“So what do you do Maan?” Aditya asked.
Maan and Geet shared a look glancing between Taz and Sanjana who continued to bicker.
“Just ignore them, they’ll sort it out between themselves” Samir waved.
“I run my own company, Khurana Constructions” he replied.
“The new business just opposite Boulton House on Chorlton Street?” Samir arched his brows.
“Yeah, that’s the one. Do you work around there?” Maan responded wondering how Samir knew.
“I work for the firm across the street” Samir responded. “Commercial Solicitor or business lawyer as some others might call it” he informed.
Before Maan could say anything further Sanjana spoke up. “Topaz made blueberry cobbler and a peach cobbler, which one would you like?”
“Blueberry” Aditya answered.
“Peach with whipped cream” Samir replied.
Sanjana glanced between Geet and Maan.
“I’m full” Maan informed.
“Peach please” Geet replied.
“Whipped cream?” she asked.
Geet nodded.
“You sure you want none?” Sanjana asked Maan again. “You’re going to regret not having her cobbler”
“Dear God Sanjana, you make it sound dirty” Samir sighed.
“Now, now hot stuff it isn’t my fault you got a dirty mind” she leaned forward inching closer to his face. “But if you want to go there…”
“I swear down blue balls!” Taz screamed noticing Sanjana almost leaning into her husband.
“Keep your knickers on Topaz. I’m only screwing” Sanjana called out laughing loudly winking at Samir who’d gestured his finger around his throat cheekily.
“Sam, don’t make me walk out and go to Adeel’s house” she threatened.
“I didn’t do anything” Samir called out defending himself. “And dammit why do you always have to bring him up for?” he asked.
“Because no one else seems to affect you but him”
“That’s because you nearly married him” he narrowed his eyes.
“We’re in a mad house” Maan whispered to Geet as they watched their ‘hosts’ going at it again.
“You know, I could still marry him” she warned.
“Don’t even go there cuckoo cracker” he answered.
“You two aren’t being very good hosts” Sanjana brought the small bowls of dessert over handing it to Aditya and Maan.
“Oh here comes the Saint” Taz called out in a singing voice. “Start playing the hymns”
“Jealous much Topaz?” Sanjana glowered.
“Spin on this” Taz flipped her middle finger and grabbed the bowls returning to the table and handed Geet and Samir their bowls.
“Looney tunes” Sanjana poked Taz on the side.
“Bubble head” Taz countered. “You seriously need to buy her a brain” she looked at Aditya disapprovingly.
“And you need to pay for a therapist” Sanjana informed Samir.
“Guys I think…” Aditya started.
“I hate you so much sometimes” Sanjana grouched.
“Back at you love!” Taz rolled her eyes. “I’m never cooking for you again”
“I don’t want your hair filled cooking”
“You…”
“Seriously shut the hell up” Aditya intervened loud enough for the both of them to stop and turned to him. “Between your arguing, did you both even realise that the two people we’d invited to dinner have sneaked out the door?”
“What?” Sanjana and Taz looked around then at the seat that was occupied by them. They then shared a look and burst out laughing.
Samir and Aditya shared a pity look between themselves, all the while wondering how did they fall in love with these two lunatics?
Maan closed the door behind them chuckling with his wife, “Next time we’re going to say no”
“They’re funny” she kicked off her heels shrugging out of her jacket. “Do you think they’ve realised we’re gone?” she asked.
“They’re probably still arguing” Maan shook his head as they walked towards their bedroom. He shucked out of his shirt whilst Geet grabbed her night dress from the drawer.
“How do they even find so much stuff to argue about?” she asked though wasn’t expecting an answer. She walked into the bathroom to quickly change then returned, Maan had already changed and slipped into their bed. She climbed in shifting into his arms, entwining their legs together and buried her face in his chest.
“Do you like our new neighbours?” Maan asked softly rubbing her back.
“They’re a good entertainment package” she giggled quietly.
“Hmm… looking forward to the courses?”
“Yeah, I’d like to learn how to cook that steak. It was really nice” she responded.
“In the crazy’s words – give it a few weeks and you’ll cook a decent meal” he chuckled.
“They’re like 4 versions of Amelia” Geet snickered.
“I’d prefer one Amelia” Maan answered. “No Amelia would be my preference, but if I had to choose, I’d choose Amelia over those four”
Geet hummed in response, her eyes drew to the night sky of Deansgate. It wasn’t like their India where stars were high and shone brightly, instead here the stars seemed so much more further away. The night sky was almost navy with a few stars dotted around, they couldn’t enjoy the cool breeze as here it wasn’t cool, it was cold wind in the negative temperatures.
Both Maan and Geet listened to one another’s soft breathing as sleep invaded their minds…
Geet jolted up awake, sweat misted her skin, her throat felt dry and she seemed almost pale. Maan glanced over his shoulder hearing her heavy breathing and hurried to her side. Whilst his wife had been sleeping, he’d failed to sleep for long. The emptiness of their penthouse reminded him, he didn’t have his dadima with him. Not only his daughter but his dadima was missing from his new life. He wanted to hear her voice, listen to his dadima’s calm voice knowing she’d be able to guide him with even her littlest sentence…
“Geet… you okay?” he held her arms, his brows furrowed in worry.
Despite the light-hearted day they’d had, her dreams were filled with the memories of their daughter. “Talk to me please..” Maan whispered.
“She’s always there” Geet whispered, tears blurred her vision. “Her face… those tiny hands… I feel like I could hear her”
Maan closed his eyes pulling her into his arms and held onto her, “She’s with us Geet”
“She’s not here though…” she cried tightening her arms around his middle. “We’re not holding her…”
“Shh…” Maan rocked her slowly in his arms, once she’d calmed down a little he climbed out of bed grabbing her a glass of water then helped her sip. After he put the glass away, he climbed back in bed holding his wife in his arms silently, neither spoke another word and soon sleep came once again, this time without any dreams.
“Bhai has buried himself in work, Amelia’s busy… they both seem to have like lost contact” Araina mumbled as she walked through the local park with Ranbir. She’d made plans with Ranbir to jog around their local park, they’d run for a while but now walked slowly as they caught up.
“With Maan bhai and Geet bhabhi now gone… it’s like they don’t have excuses to meet up at mansion…” she shrugged. Almost everyday, every one of them had turned up at the mansion as there were always something happening at the mansion. Be it wedding, karwa chaut, girls night in or just dinner, everyone dropped in whenever and whatever time.
But now, there were excuses. Araina had made excuses herself, she’d excused herself from the dinner Meera invited her to, knowing that her niece was buried in the garden sent a chill down her spine. She didn’t think she could walk into the mansion and be able to just enjoy a quiet dinner.
Avoidance seemed easier, though she knew deep down she couldn’t continue like this.
“Maybe invite them all over to your place for dinner, I heard Amelia had gone over to the mansion” Ranbir suggested. “That way, Karan wouldn’t refuse”
“Mmhmm” she nodded thoughtfully deciding to do just that. “Lunch is probably going to be better, not today though. I do have a court session at 11am” she informed.
“C’mon I’ve got my car, I’ll drop you off” Ranbir wrapped his arm around her waist leading away.
“Bhai called me last night but I’d dozed off” Vikrant told dadima as he joined her for breakfast.
“He’d called me and responded by text, I’ll call him around the afternoon as they’re probably both sleeping right now” dadima replied.
“This time difference is annoying” he shook his head.
“When do you leave for work?” Dadima asked.
“Just after breakfast, Meera will be down soon. She doesn’t leave until 10am” he told her.
Dadima smiled realising why he said that, “I was only asking bete. Even when Maan and Geet were here, I was alone during the day as they both had work”
“I know dadima” he responded taking her hand, “I don’t like that you’re alone for those few hours though” he murmured. “It’s never been just us, bhai was always there”
Dadima sniffed covering her mouth, “Kaash woh dono yahan hote”
Vikrant stood from his chair and embraced dadima, he wished desperately that he could take away her sorrow and loneliness.
