2. Blood, Ties and Tears
Vancouver, BC, Canada
He stared at the woman in his arms. Her naked dusky skin glowed in the moonlight that peeked through the curtains.
With her aquiline nose, eyes a rare mix of blue and green, and blonde curly bangs that framed her oval face, she was truly an exquisite woman.
Samantha. Sam. His girlfriend. Although in his opinion, they were too old for such nomenclature.
Theirs was an open relationship where expectations never come into play. Expectations and emotions were a joy killer, they both understood this very well.
Disengaging her arms from himself, he went to stand by the window. There was a storm brewing inside his heart. Something, somewhere was amiss. He could feel it in his bones.
The huge glass towers and the majestic mountains powdered with dusts of snow peeking in between the towers, it failed to soothe his nerves.
He was twenty when he had first visited this place and the nature lover that he was, he had instantly fallen for the mountains, seas and the beaches.
It had been a decade since he had moved to this metropolis. One would think that the place had lost its charm but it wasn't the case. He still was in very much love with this green jewel of North America but there were days he felt homesick. Today was one such day.
His cell blinked a few times.
"Hello"

Delhi, India
The plane landed at Delhi airport and all the memories that he had thought had been buried to death, they were suddenly alive. He fought and pushed his demons away.
His brother had died last night. Or maybe he had breathed his last, the last afternoon. He didn't know. He had been too shocked to process the news any further than the first line.
Dead. His brother was dead. His younger brother was no more.
The car entered the huge mansion and Nakul Kaka came running to receive him at the door.
"Maan baba... you came. What tragedy has struck us! Dev Baba...he's no more. How can God be so cruel. He was so young. What will happen of his wife, or his child. Hey Rama! Why did you do this to us !"
Nakul's words fell on deaf ears as Maan had traveled back in time.
"Why are you crying?" He had asked his brother.
"I don't want to travel in a plane. What if it crashes? In films, the aeroplane always crashes and people die. If I die, I'll be left alone. I hate being alone."
"Films show all sort of bullshit. Nothing will happen to you. Why you scared when I'm there. We'll die together so you'll have to bear my company always."
"They were making fun of me because I didn't know how to swim."
"Bhai...I got the first prize in the Science fest. Mine was awarded as the best model."
"Bhai I think I love Nidhi, Nayantara and also Shamreen."
" I got into IIT. AIR- 4th. I can't believe this Bhai. Thank you Bhai, it's all because of your guidance."
"I saw her at Chandni Chowk. Geet, her name is. I think I am finally in love bhai. You think she'll like me?"
"I am marrying her. You have to come. Please. You have to."
He felt the bile rise in his throat.
Every brick, every corner, each breath reminded him of his brother. It was wrong for him to be alive when his brother was not. He had promised to not let him be alone. He had given his word. And he was the elder one. He should have died first. Falling on his knees, for the first time in twelve years since the grandmother died, he let his emotions overpower him. He let the walls down and broke into tears. His harsh and rough sobs, were absorbed by the old and experienced walls of the mansions.

He swirled the amber liquid before gulping it down. It had been a few hours since the funeral rites had been performed and his head was throbbing painfully. The numerous guests and their condolences didn't help his case.
"What would become of the company now that Dev is no more?" Arjun, his brother in law asked pouring him a drink.
The baby was crying again. He was always crying. Just wouldn't stop. Where was the baby's mother?
"Since you are taking care of the Canada business, it will be impossible for you to shift here."
"This is not the time to talk about business!" He reprimanded and left for his room.
His brother's widow sat lifeless next to the cot as the baby cried for attention, he saw while passing his brother's room.
His headache had worsened. It felt like his head will explode. He didn't want to be here. He just didn't. He wanted Sam and the solace of her arms. He wanted to forget the melancholy that has enveloped him.The baby's wailing grew louder and stronger.
He stormed into his brother's room and shouted at the woman.
"For goodness sake, make him stop crying. Would you?"
It seemed to have surprised both the baby and the mother for both of them were jolted out of their respective worlds.
He watched as she lifted the baby in her arms and rubbed his back and soothed him.
Her misted, swollen eyes met his dark unfathomable ones, and she apologized.
"I'm sorry. He won't disturb you again."
