LOCATION: KHURANA HOTELS, NEW YORK
Today was inaugration of new branch of Khurana Hotels in New York. Thakur Amardeep, Thakurain Savitri Devi and Vicky had come for the inaugration of the new Khurana Hotels in New York. Ram and Janaki had stayed back in India to see to their Head Office in New Delhi. It was by lot of cajoling on Maan's part, but when that didn't work, then Maan gave an ultimatum by putting his Dadaji and Dadimaa's hands on his head saying, "Dadaji aur Dadimaa aapko meri kasam ki agar aap dono humare Khurana Hotels, New York ke inaugration par nahi aaye toh aap mera maraa muh dekhenge!" (Dadaji and Dadimaa, swear on me that you will attend the inaugration of Khurana Hotels, New York, otherwise you will see my corpse!) Thakur Amardeep and Thakurain Savitri Devi were shocked by Maan's this statement. Thakur Amardeep gave him a tight slap and thundered, "Khabardaar jo tumne humare saamne apni mauth ka zikaar bhi kiya toh! Tum toh humari jaan ho. Kitni minnaton ke baad hummei tum mile ho. Theek hai sirf yeh aakhiri baar hum kissi bhi Khurana Industries ke event mein shaamil honge!" (Dare you talk about your death in front of us, Maan. You are our life! We have got you after lot of prayer to God. Alright for your sake, for the last time we are attending any Khurana Industries' event.)
Thakur Amardeep, Thakurain Savitri Devi, Maan and Vicky had flown in from India today morning.Thakur Amardeep was feeling uneasy during last leg of the journey. Although they were flying first class but could not do much medically mid air. By the time they landed in JFK International Airport, Thakur Amardeep was feeling much better so everyone thought that he was queasy due to high altitude. Khuranas reached hotel, freshened up had breakfast and rested. Maan went to the Khurana Hotels to see to last minute details but Vicky was with his grandparents.
Maan came just before lunch time to take his grandparents to the venue. On reaching the venue, Maan had made arrangements for "havan" and made his Dadaji and Dadimaa sit side by side to start Lakshmi - Kuber puja.
Thakur Amardeep and Thakurain Savitri Devi were hesistating when the main panditji said, "Yeh puja kewal ek"grahast" yaa "ek dampati" kar sakte hain!" (This prayer can only be done by a "householder" or a "married couple".) As neither Maan nor Vicky were married, Thakur Amardeep and Thakurain Savitri Devi did all the rites and rituals much to Maan's delight. After the "maha-aarti" was over and everyone present were going for lunch, Thakur Amardeep stood up but staggered and would have fallen if Maan and Vicky had not caught him on time. But he fell unconscious and slumped on their shoulders scaring Savitri Devi. "Suniye, Suniye, utthiye!"Savitri Devi shook her husband to wake him up but it was of no use. After making his grandfather lie on the sofa, Maan thundered,"CALL THE AMBULANCE AT ONCE !"Within 15mins., the ambulance was at the doorstep. Maan wanted to accompany them but Savitri Devi stopped, "Maan beta, aap jaldi se yahaan ka kaam sameith kar hummei hasptaal mei miliye! Hum abb iss umar mei bhaag-daud nahi kar sakte." (Maan you quickly wrap up your work here and meet us at the hospital. As I cannot do any running about at this age!) Finally unable to act strong any longer, Savitri Devi broke down. Maan gathered her in embrace,"Dadimaa, aap shaant ho jaaiye. Agar aap toot jaayengi toh Dadaji ko kaun dekhegaa? Aap chinta matt kariye Dadimaa, Vicky hai aapke saath bhaag-daud karne ke liye. Mai baas kuch der mein aata hoon!" (Dadimaa calm down. If you get disheartened who will support Dadaji. Anyway Vicky is there to do running about. I will join you shortly!) Vicky supported Savitri Devi and sat with her in the ambulance.
AN HOUR LATER
This one hour was unbearable for Savitri Devi and Vicky. Since they had brought Thakur Amardeep by ambulance to the hospital, doctors were with him but they had given no news to the family. By now Maan had reached the hospital and he asked, "Dadimaa, Dadaji kaise hain? Doctor kya kehte hain?" (Dadimaa, how is Dadaji? What does the doctor say?)
"Patta nahin beta, jab se hum yahaan aaye hain tabse doctoron ki team unke saath hai magar koi kuch batta hi nahi raha" (I don't know Maan. Since we have arrived in the hospital, a team of doctors are in the ICU with your grandfather, but no one tells us anything.) Savitri Devi again broke down.
Maan got into his MSK mode and started getting annoyed,"What the hell is going on? Why have we not been told about Mr. Amardeep Singh Khurana's health? Afterall we are his family and have a right to know."
"Sir please lower your voice, this is ICU and many patients are critical here!" Matron came and explained in a cool, calm and soft voice.
"I know so is my grandfather. He is also critical and we have not been told anything about his health." Maan's voice raised a pitch higher making Savitri Devi and Vicky run in Maan's direction to calm him down.
"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE MATRON! I HAVE SAID THAT THERE HAS TO BE COMPLETE SILENCE HERE!" It was a young woman wearing the old style white coat.
"I know doctor, but this gentleman..."
The young lady doctor turned in anger and said, "Yes may I help you? Why are you creating a disturbance here?" Seeing the young lady doctor's face all the three Khuranas were frozen.
Vicky was first to recover and say, "G...I mean b...".
"It seems you have "speech" problem." The doctor said emphasizing the word "speech".
Vicky regained his composure and said,"Doctor we would like to know about our grandfather, Thakur Amardeep Singh Khurana."
"Well..."
"Beta, please hummei apne pati se milna hai." (My child, can I please meet my husband?) Savitri Devi said with folded hands and whimpering voice.
(instead of phone please imagine folded hands!)
"Auntyji, aap yeh kya kar rahi hain? Humne aap sabko Uncleji ke baare mei iss liye kuch nahi battaya kyunki uncleji ko 12ghante ke andar dusara heart-attack aaya thaa aur hum sab doctor unhei bacchane mei lage the." (Auntyji, what are you doing? We have not told you anything because within 12hours, Uncleji has had a second heart attack. So we all doctors were trying to save his life!) Bringing a gasp from Savitri Devi and Vicky. "Uss samay hum sab doctors ko Uncleji ko bacchana zyaada zaruri laga bajaaye aapko aa kar unke baare mei battane ke!" (Hence, at that time Doctors' felt its more important to save Uncleji rather than come and give you all minute by minute report!) Making Savitri Devi understand the seriousness behind the doctor's words.
Just then a middle aged doctor came out and signalled the lady doctor to follow him. When they were some distance away from Khurana family, Dr. Subramanium said, "Dr. Anna Singh (please see the CS), what is your next line of treatment for Mr. Khurana."
"I regret to say Sir that I will have to excuse myself from this case."
"Anna, how is it possible? You are his attending doctor. If it was not for you, Mr. Khurana won't have been alive today!"
"But Sir, I'm on leave from tomorrow. My son, Ayush's exams start tomorrow." Dr. Subramanium nodded and left.
