CHAPTER 1
8 YEARS LATER
"Who was it, Geet?" Nikki asked in her usual chirpy self as Geet finished her phone conversation.
"Sam... As usual," she replied, letting out a heavy sigh as she said the last words. Although she hated how her sister and father used to treat her as a child, targeting her self-esteem and making her feel low about her physical appearance, all the time, she was, nevertheless, thankful to Samaira for the fact that she financed her studies and even provided her with money for her daily expenses.
She was, however, aware that Sam didn't do that out of *love*. With their father passing away few years back, Sam, whose modelling career had already kicked start and was going on in full swing, took full responsibility of her sister, Geet. Well, that was mainly to enhance her social image in the eyes of others, Geet realised over time, when her behaviour towards her never changed.
Sam had even taken Geet out of the boarding school her father had sent her 1 month after her 15th birthday, giving as reason the fact that she cannot live without her baby sister any longer.
But Geet knew better. Not that she minded, because truth be told she hated it in boarding school. And then she joined the local college. Once finished, she did her degree in Applied Accounting unlike Sam who was never interested in studies, always dedicating all her time in maintaining her figure with the aim of becoming a well sought after model. And now Geet was already in the last semester of her last year of MBA, fully concentrating on her thesis, with all expenses being borne by her Oh-So-Caring-And-Loving- Elder sister.
Once she joined university, they stopped living together since Geet would have had to travel a lot daily for her classes. And even Sam started having frequent trips abroad. So, for the ease of both of them, she got Geet a luxurious apartment near her University which she sublet to Jiya and Nikki without Sam's ignorance.
Initially, they would spend the weekends together in their hometown, and then it reduced to monthly visits and gradually, they totally stopped meeting. It was only phone calls between them with Sam. informing Geet everytime she would transfer money in her bank account. Not that it mattered to her because they never had a normal sisterly relationship between them. Rather, it used to hurt her everytime Sam would pretend to be all loving and nice to her in front of her friends and acquaintances just to project a good image of her. Geet had found good friends in the form of Nikki and Jiya who made up for the sisterly love she always craved for despite having an elder sister.
"Oh, it means you received your monthly *pocket money*, which, as usual, you'll put aside," Jiya said. "Yaar Geet, just imagine, how much fun we could have with all the money that your sister sends you. But no!!! You have to show your attitude," she added grumpily.
"Not again Jiya!!! And it's not about attitude. I don't like using her money for everything, you know that," Geet told her.
"Yea yea yea... Again that self respect rant," Jiya said.
"Ooofff!!! Now stop it both of you. We don't want to get started on this topic again, right?" Nikki said getting into her referee-mode.
Well, although, Sam had paid for her courses and even provided her with an apartment, Geet never felt the need to use the money she kept sending her monthly. Geet was never fond of a luxurious lifestyle, something she inherited from her mother, so having a big apartment itself for her seemed too much. That's why she had been keen on subletting two rooms. Another benefit was that she would get company and would not need to live alone. And the money she received from Jiya and Sasha from the rooms she sublet was enough to cover her living expenses. That's why she always transferred the money Sam sent her to another account she had opened for a monthly contribution to a local orphanage. Those kids were much more needy, she used to tell her roommates.
"Now let's go, we have a class in few minutes with the new Oxford-Return Professor. We don't want to make a bad impression by being late in the first class itself, do we?" Nikki reminded them.
"Oh Yea!!!" Jiya exclaimed. "Wait and see how he'll flaunt his Oh-So-Hot-Or-Cool British Accent," she added. "I can bet my neck on that," she shrugged.
"Well, then we'll need to flaunt our Indian Accent. And trust me, he won't be able to do that. I also bet my neck," Geet joked causing the other two to giggle as the three of them walked towards their Class.
****************
"So who did that?" Geet shot the question to Dhruv and Sid as she set her eyes on the whiteboard.
Like every single time a new Professor would come, this time also, the class' whiteboard was adorned with the cartoon of the stereotypical image of an Old Man wearing huge glasses who was nearly stumbling with the huge books he carried in his hand. And as usual, it had to be either of those 2- make that 3, except the 3rd one hadn't still arrived.
I wonder how I befriended them, Geet would often think whenever they would be up to their mischiefs, realising how apart she was from them. She was more of the calm and composed type of girl despite being talkative, while those 3, well, the less said the better. But they loved her, they cared for her and protected her... Just like that... Without any selfish motives, she would conclude... Unlike her deceased father and Sam. And this is what mattered the most to her.
"Oh let me guess!!!" Jiya exclaimed. "Yeh mahaan kaam toh iss kameene ke ilaawa aur karega bhi kaun," she added as she glared Dhruv.
They had a fight the previous day, and she was clearly still upset about that.
"Haan haan I'm sure it's Dhruv only," Nikki added. "Mera Sid to bahut sweet hai," she said with a slight blush as he winked at her, still smitten by him following their date by the sea the previous night.
"Exqueeeze me dear Saali, but your Sid isn't as sweet as you think of him to be. Yeh sab ussi ne kiya hai," Dhruv quickly defended himself.
"Sorry baby but... Guilty as charged!!!" Sid finally said as he lifted both hands in the air inviting a gasp from Nikki who twisted her mouth at him and turned away.
Geet, who was a silent spectator, finally said,
"But why did you do this? Don't you remember what I told you the last time??? It's not a good thing Sid. Baron ka mazaaq nahi uraana chahiye," she again explained getting into her big sister more although she was just 2 hours elder than Sid, with their birthday coincidently falling on the same day. Siblings from different mothers, they would often joke.
"What-er-ver!!!" Both Sid and Dhruv said in unison and gave each other a hi-fi for speaking out the same thing while the 3 girls just shook their heads at them. Inka kuch nahi ho sakta!!!
"But Sid, the professor is not at all like this," Pari, one of their batch mates, and close friend said.
"Tujhe bara pata hai uss sadoo ke baare mein," Sid said as he furrowed his eyebrows at her.
"Of course pata hoga, apne sar mein ladkon ka Wikipedia leke ghoomti jo hai," Vicky who entered at that moment said which invited a hi-fi from both Dhruv and Sid.
"Nice one dude," Sid said, winking at him.
"Of course I do!!! Areh I interviewed him yesterday," she explained, totally ignoring Vicky as she gave him a side frown.
"Interview???!!! Kyun koyi VIP hai???" This time Dhruv asked.
"Silly, for our Annual Magazine," she said tapping her forehead at their reasoning.
"Ohhh!!!" Sid and Dhruv said while Vicky just shrugged.
"Toh phir Kaise hai woh?" Nikki asked.
"Old toh bilkul bhi nahi hai," Pari immediately said.
"Matlab he's young," Jiya concluded and continued, "hot hai???" causing Dhruv to glare at her as he cleared his throat to remind her of his presence which she simply ignored, purposely.
"Yaaar... Itna hot hai ke mere toh paseene chuk rahe the sirf unhe dekh ke," Pari said.
"Kuch bhi, Pari," Geet said, as she grasped her words. She can sooo exaggerate, she thought.
"Nahi Geet!!! Sach mein bahut hot hai. He's so dreamy yaar," she said in a trance as she thought back to him.
"Itna hi hot hai, toh model ban jaata, yahan aake, apna intellectual waqt zayaa karke meri jagah lene ki koshish kyun kar raha hai. Girls' Department is all mine dude," Vicky complained in an irritated tone to which the girls chuckled slightly.
"Pfffttt!!! Khood ko itna bhi bhav mat de, lafandar kahi ka," Pari shot at him before continuing, "Aur model ka toh pata nahi, but apparently he had a brief career as a singer. And most importantly, he is the sole heir to his family business. Haan yeh baat alag hai; that he has no particular interest in that. That's why he took up this teaching profession. And with his only guardian not keeping well nowadays, he has returned here and currently he's teaching on a part time basis because he has to handle his family business as well. Handsome hai, hot hai, intelligent hai and at the same time rich bhi hai," Pari ended with a wink while Vicky looked at her intently. Story kuch familiar si hai, he told himself.
"Ummm, sounds like a good catch," Jiya said, intentionally, to irritate Dhruv further.
"Wait, I even have his photo with me on my phone. Abhi dikhaati hoon," Pari said.
Obliviously, Geet forwarded herself, intrigued by this new Professor. Now she also wanted to see him.
"Voila!!! Here he is," Pari said as she opened his phone and then turned her phone to the others, who were quite keen to know how the so-much-talked-about professor looked like.
And then, they stared at the phone. Looked at Pari and back to the phone, again at Pari and back to the phone.
"Kyun???!!! Clean bowled Na, I told you he is different," she said.
"Yea very different," all said at the same time and then Geet turned the phone to Pari to show her what they saw.
"Oh no!!! Lagta hai, phone ka battery, khatam ho Gaya," Pari realised as she stared at the black screen.
"Sorry Guys!!! But hey, you can google him up. His name is M..." She was just about to say his name when they heard someone clearing his throat by the door.
"Shittte!!! Lagta hai he's already here," Pari whispered and they all hurriedly went to their respective seat without looking back.
"Good Morning, I'm Maan, Professor Maan Singh Khurana," and Geet knew she would have hit the ground had she not taken her seat yet as she lifted her gaze to look at him the moment she heard the name.
"Maaan," his name came out as a whisper from her mouth which, although in a low voice, did catch the attention of the other 5, who, immediately, turned their attention to her while Vicky gasped loud. Bro???!!!
They all shared a confused look among themselves, as they wondered about Geet and Vicky's reaction. Who is he, after all?
