CHAPTER 16

"Maan Darling!!! Where are you lost???!!! We are here since one hour already and all you're doing is throwing pebbles in the sea. Such a boring soul you are!!! Kuch aur na sahi, at least mere hi kuch selfies kheech lete," Sam said shruggingly.

Ever since she became Maan's girlfriend, her modelling career shot to heights. Through his contacts, Maan did start his singing career and it helped him further that he was talented too. But at the same time, he ensured himself that he tagged Sam along on his road to success. They were one, weren't they? Well, almost, he would tell himself. Of course, he had to help her. Though, Dadima didn't appreciate this a single bit, she said nothing. After all, her grandson's happiness meant the world to her. And if this girl is the one he is happy with, then so is she.

One of Maan's acquaintance, who had given him his first break and for whom he had to record his next song, Mr Aryan Malhotra, who also happened to be one of the top producers and directors in India, was sponsoring a fashion show. And on Sam's insistence, he talked to him to get her as the show stopper. Well, he rather, agreed to sing his next song for him on the condition that Sam becomes the show stopper of his upcoming show - all on her behest. The fashion show was taking place in Italy and since they were hardly getting any time together lately, Maan suggested they go two days earlier. However, ever since he came, he was a bit aloof. And Sam, who was excited to explore the country she was visiting for the first time, started being a bit irritated with him.

"Aise hi baithna tha, toh mujhe do din pehle kyun le aaye? You're such a bore. Isse acha toh main Mr Aryan Malhotra ke saath chali jaati. He offered me to come for dinner with him."

That caught Maan's attention.

"Really?"

"Ummm yea erhhmm I mean, he was taking all the models who already reached here for dinner so that he can get to know us all. That's why!!! But you know how much I love you baby. I politely declined. Aur tum ho ke?" she quickly diverted him.

Maan pulled her to him.

"I'm sorry Sam. It's just that..." He paused a while.

"What???"

"I mean, plane mein tum ne mujhse joh kuch bhi kaha..."

"Kya kaha???"

"Wohi...Chaashni ke bare mein. I mean her not being your real sister and all..."

"So???"

"So??? Really??? I mean how can you be so indifferent to this? C'mon yaar, you share the same mother and what's her fault in all of this?" Maan was feeling sorry for the teenage girl.

Such a moron. Sam thought to herself. By now, she knew, Maan carried a soft spot for Geet. Better play safe with your words Sam, she reminded herself.

"I know. I mean, I understand, but there's nothing I can do here. No matter what, Dad will never accept her," she slowly encircled her arms around his neck as she sat in his lap. "You know baby, I have talked to Dad a lot of time about this, but he never listens to me. I really feel bad for my kiddo. I wish I could help her out but even I am helpless here. If only Mom didn't do that one mistake," she said in a soft tone as her eyes started brimming.

"Oh Sam!!! Please, I didn't mean to hurt you," Maan said as he realised she was on the verge of crying. "I know sweatheart, you really love her. I mean she's so sweet and cute. How can anyone not love her. I wish Uncle could see this side of hers. But please don't cry. You know I hate seeing your tears," he said as he hugged her, gently patting her back.

As if I would waste my tears for that girl, Sam thought hypocritely to herself.

"Where were you? You know since how long I have been waiting for you? You said you will come after exercising for a while, right?" Maan asked as Sam entered their room.

"Yea, Aryan ke saath breakfast karne gayi thi," she blurted.

"What do you mean?"

"Errr!!!! Who...uhmmm yesterday I couldn't go for the group dinner na, so when he saw me at the gym, he offered me... I mean us... as in there were errr 3 of us who didn't go yesterday, so he asked us to have breakfast together so that he could... he could...uhmmm get to know us better," she quickly came up with something.

Although he found her stammering a bit weird, her explanation seemed justified to him. After all, what other reason could there be?

"May I have the pleasure to dance with the pretty lady?" Aryan asked during the pre-show cocktail party.

"Errr..."

"Why not!!!" Sam replied at the same time that Maan was trying to find an answer to avoid him. Somehow, he didn't find him to be a good person lately. He had seen him openly flirting with many of the models during the day. Quite surprising for him though, as he always thought of him as a gentleman.

Never judge a book by its covers, he reminded himself.

He looked at Sam, who was averting his gaze. He wondered why she agreed when just 5 minutes back she refused him saying she didn't want to tire herself out for the much awaited show was to take place the following day.

But there was nothing he could say now for she already agreed and before he had time to get a grasp, off she went, with him holding her by her waist. But she looked back at Maan though. Apologetically maybe, he thought to himself, as she gestured 5 minutes to him.

Maybe she didn't want to refuse the sponsor, he thought to himself. Well, she was right though, he told himself. After all, her career would take a huge leap with this one big show, so anything for that, like she used to say.

Once the show was over, a success party was scheduled the same night in a cruise.

"How am I looking Maan baby?" Sam asked once she was done with applying her lipstick.

Maan scanned her from top to bottom.

She was wearing a strapless dress with a slit starting from the pelvic bone and posing a la Angelina Jolie for him.

Giving a not-so-approving look, Maan replied:

"Kuch zyaada hi revealing nahi hai kya?"

Sam rolled her eyes at him.

"Oh c'mon!!! This is in at the moment. Waise bhi, Aryan was very happy with my work, so he got this tailor-made for me at the very last moment to wear for the party."

"What???"

"What what??? It's a designer dress baby. There's no way I'm taking it off. Anyways, he will feel bad if I don't wear it. So for him, I have to wear it. You do understand right!!!" she played with her words.

"Hmmm!!! I guess I do," he replied softly.

Maan ended up feeling bored in the party as he stood in one corner, his drink in his hand. He just joined this industry, so he knew very few people in the party. And even Sam!!! Isse bhi abhi washroom jaana tha.

Tired of waiting for her, he eventually, made his mind to go on the deck for some fresh air. As he climbed the stairs, he started playing the last few days' events in his mind. Sam, seemed, a bit different, for some reason, to him. Maybe her work was taking a toll on her, he self-concluded. He knew how demanding Aryan can be. He has worked with him previously, so he knew him that much at least. Well did he know him enough though? Somehow, he was not liking the interest Aryan was taking in Sam. Or maybe you're just overthinking Maan. Aisa kuch...

Then he stopped. He heard voices. Familiar voices. In fact, very familiar voices.

"Oh baby why are you so angry?"

"Then what do you expect from me? I don't understand. Why can't you just leave him? I mean, what has he got to give you?"

She left trail of kisses on his neck to calm him down.

"Oh c'mon baby, you know he means nothing to me. He was just a means for me to enter this world. Otherwise, we have nothing common. I mean did you ever hear him? Eternal love, destiny, unbreakable bond!!! Ewww, that's just cheesy!!! Only I know, how I bore him for so long. If only, I met you before," she said as she playfully bit his ear to change his mood.

"Oh really!!!"

"Uh-haan"

"Then, come to my suite tonight!!!" he challenged her.

"Tonight!!! But... ok fine!!! I'll tell him I have a plan with the girls and th..." Suddenly she felt someone's presence in their surroundings. Immediately she turned around and it was him!!!

He was looking at her with painful and teary eyes. He loved her. He truly loved her. Dadima didn't like her, yet he loved her. She was at times, mean to his Chashni, yet her loved her. She would be nasty at times, still he loved her. He believed in the fact that it's not important to love a good person, rather one should find the good things in a person no matter how the person is and this is what he did. Heck!!! He was even contemplating on proposing her after the party. The ring box suddenly, felt heavy in his pocket.

Aryan let out a smirk as he grabbed Sam by her waist purposely to piss Maan even further while Sam just stood there, smiling wickedly. Well, at least, she didn't have to find excuses to break up with him. Saved her time, she thought to herself.

After everything he heard, Maan knew there was no room for explanation. Without telling them a word, he simply walked away. Away from her, away from him, away from then, away from that world itself, to never look back again.

"Mujhe bura iss baat ka nahi laga Geet ke woh kissi aur ki hai. But she played with my emotions. She used me. Mujhse pyaar ka naatak kiya!!! Aur kyun??? Sirf apna career banane ke liye. Areh main toh uski help tab bhi karta agar who mujhse pyaar nahi karti. Why did she have to fake love to me for this???!!!" Maan complained as he told Geet about what happened between Sam and him.

Geet placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. He held her hand and looked up to her. She swore, she noticed tears forming in his eyes. But they never dropped though.

"Mujhe usse nafrat nahi hai Geet!!! Kyunki nafrat bhi toh unse kiye jaate hai joh aapke zindagi mein kuch mayne rakhe. But she's nothing for me Geet. Lekin woh duniya mere liye nahi bana hai. I hate that world. I hate its people. I hate their double-faces. Main unke jaise nahi hoon aur na kabhi ban sakta hoon. I just don't fit there," he said.

"So did you forsake your dream of becoming an accomplished singer just because of that???" she queried.

He didn't reply. But she got her answer.

She got on her knees in front of him, making him face her directly.

"Ek baat kahoon Maan. Jab raasta kharaab ho jaaye, toh hum raaste badalte hai, manzil nahi,"

He knew what she was implying.

"Kehne ki baat hai Geet!!! Jiss pe guzarta hai, ussi ko pata hai. Waise bhi, I don't have any regrets. Dadima is happy to have me here, by her side. She is content knowing that after her, there is someone to look after the business. And in her happiness, lies mine too. I couldn't have asked for more. I'm happy in my space Geet. Trust me, I really have no regrets. Main woh sab bahut peeche chor ke aaya hoon," he told her.

"Who sab peeche chor ke aaye ho, toh aage kyun nahi barna chahte ho Maan," she asked hopefully.

For few seconds, he stayed mum. He knew what she was trying to say.

"It's quite late Geet. We'll talk in the morning," he avoided her as he tried getting up on his feet but he couldn't. She held him back.

"Mujhe mera jawaab nahi mila Maan," she said softly.

"Geet!!!! I..." he sighed. "I need time Geet. Mujhe waqt chahiye," he finally said.

"Kitna waqt chahiye Maan??? Main zindagi bhar intezaar karne ko tayyar hoon, tum bas ek baar kaho toh."

At that time, he realised the seriousness in her talks. She was serious about him. He could sense that. But he didn't want to be unfair to her. He needed time to process everything.

"Hmmm," was all he could reply. But that was enough to trigger a smile from her.

"Thank you Maan," she said, smiling mistily and without forewarning, she hugged Maan, tighly, knowing this was where she always wanted to be. Maan hesitated to hug her back. But not wanting to disappoint her, he patted her lightly before breaking the hug to move to his room.

The worst thing is to wait...

But the best thing is having someone worthy to wait for...

That night, once she was done with her diary entry, Geet hit her bed with a different feeling. She had a sort of contentment in her, happy to have finally voiced out her feelings.

Now all she had to do was... wait!!!
