CHAPTER 7
"So what did you have to tell me?" A curious Geet asked Maan as they sipped on their respective juices.
"Geet, what I'm going to tell you, I don't know whether you are already aware or not. But knowing it, I can no longer keep it to myself, especially when I'm doubting that you don't have any idea about the whole thing. And it's important for you to know because it concerns you," Maan said as his face tensed.
This got Geet worrying. Aisa kya kehna tha unko joh mujhse jurra huwa hai. (What could he have to say that concerned me?)
"I'm not getting you Maan. What is there to tell me?" She asked in a tensed tone. She could feel her heartbeats racing as she wondered what he had to say.
"Geet... Woh... Sam..." He started.
Ohhh!!! It had to do with her. I should have guessed it. Could it be that they were already married, she suddenly thought. She could swear that her heart nearly dropped at the mere thought of that. And here, what all she had started thinking. She kept her fingers crossed for this not to be.
"I thought you didn't want to talk about her," she said in a low voice as she averted his gaze.
"It's not about her Geet. Everything is NOT about her," he said irritatingly. Holding her hands across the table, he added, " this concerns you and only you."
"Ohhh," she replied meekly.
"Geet... Woh Sam... Actually Sen Uncle... He is not your father Geet," there he said it. But he looked down. He didn't have it in him to maintain eye contact with her in fear of her reaction and how right he was!!! He sensed her hands turning cold as he said that. Damn!!!
He looked up to see tears spilling out of eyes and running down her cheeks like a silent river as she stared at him blankly. However rude he was, for her, she was her father, Maan felt sorry for her.
He immediately left her hands and went to the other side and knelt in front of her.
"Chaashni... Please tum ai..."
"Who are my parents Maan???" She asked him with tears-filled eyes.
"Geet... Sen Aunty was your mother," he told him which shocked her more. How could this be?
"If Mama was my real Mom, then what about Sam?" She asked feeling confused.
"Geet... Woh... Actually you're both half sisters, with the same Mom," he clarified. How many more shocks would she receive in one day, she wondered as she tried grasping the whole thing.
Maan took a seat beside her as he explained, realising her shocked yet confused state.
"Geet, your mom... She... She did one mistake in her life and Sen uncle had no clue about this. It was only after you were born prematurely with some complications and needed blood, that she told him. And then, with all the complications she also experienced during the pregnancy, she passed away leaving you with no one but Sen Uncle and Sam. Uncle raised you like a daughter in front of the world because he didn't want anyone to know what his wife did, out of embarrassment. For the world, he pretended to be the devoted husband who was pained with the loss of his wife but somehow he took all the anger on you, which reflected in his behaviour towards you. That is why even Sam behaved like that," he explained her.
Sam??? How did he know about her behaviour towards her. Then it clicked her. So, Sam only told him everything. Basically everyone but her knew. Even HE knew.
"I'm a mistake Maan??? Is that why they behave like that with me???" She questioned him with dampened eyes.
Ahhh!!! How it hurt him to see her like that.
"No Chaashni," he said, wiping the tears which kept flowing. "No child is a mistake and you, definitely, are not," he explained her. "You know, some things just happen... Just like that. Same with your mother. We don't know what compelled her but I'm sure she must have had her reason. I'm not justifying her acts," he clarified, "but, I do know that whatever she did, you, surely, shouldn't have paid for that. At the same time, you have to put yourself in the shoes of Sam and Sen Uncle as well. I admit they were wrong, but think for yourself, how would you have reacted???" He questioned her back. And this got her thinking.
For sure they were wrong, but were they entirely wrong???
"I have to go Maan," she suddenly said as memories of her childhood came flooding into her mind. She could sense the tears threatening to come out as a volcano which was on the verge of erupting as she thought back of all she had gone through, how she was treated in the Sen household.
She could feel a surge of emotions welling up inside of her. It was as if she lost the rhythm of her breath and her vision blurred as her eyes started filling up... Again. But she controlled herself. No!!! She couldn't cry!!! Not in front of him!!! She couldn't bring to him her vulnerable side. She had to go.
"I have to go," she said again, as she took her belongings and went out of Maan's sight, dashing her way out of the restaurant.
"Ch---chaash..." Maan tried calling out to her but she was already gone.
*******************
Jiya was waiting for Geet to return with impatience. She, somehow, guessed that there were more to what Geet had said when she explained how she knew Maan. And the little interactions that took place between the two in front of her, along with that little note, kind of confirmed her doubts. She was like a sister to her and she, definitely, didn't want anything wrong to happen to her. She knew how vulnerable a person she is and she had to make sure no one hurts her. She thanked her stars that Nikki was staying over at Pari's place that night. She could talk to Geet more openly, she thought with relief. Her trail of thoughts were broken when she heard the doorbell ring.
*****************
"I was just thinking ab..." She started as she opened the door but one look at Geet's face and she stopped midway. "Geet!!! What happened? Did Maan Sir say something???" She asked her in an angry tone, lifting her chin.
But she didn't reply with words. One tear broke free and then the rest followed in an unbroken stream. She leaned forward and hugged Jiya pressing her nails, tightly, onto her back, allowing her pain to be washed away in form of her tears.
Jiya, who was taken a bit aback with the events, pushed the door behind Geet and slowly broke the hug to face her. Seeing her state, she brought her to the living room and seated her on a sofa as she sat beside her.
"Kya huwa Geet??? Tum aise kyun ro rahe ho??? Kissi ne kuch kaha kya??? Kahin Maan Sir ne tumhein..." (What happened Geet??? Why are you crying like this??? Did someone tell you something??? I hope Maan Sir didn't...) She tried inquiring.
"Woh Jjj...Jiya," she tried in between sobs. "Maan... Maan ne kaha Ke...ke..." (Maan... Maan said that...that...)
"What did he tell you?" Jiya asked in an angry tone.
"W--wo---woh..." And then she proceeded to tell her all that Maan had revealed to her.
*******************
"Vicky!!!" Maan literally barked on the phone.
"Woaaah bro, what happened???" He asked him.
"Ahhh I'm sorry. I know you're out with your friends but... Actually I wanted to ask you something," he quickly apologised realising he was being angry in him for no reason and also for disturbing him.
"Yea. Go on."
"Can you please give me Geet's address???" He asked him.
Vicky nearly spilled out his drink on hearing that. He was out with Dhruv and Sid for a *boys night out* and they were kind of enjoying a little drink together. Excusing himself, he moved away from them for a while for he didn't want them to hear him. He knew how dear and close Geet were to them.
"Kyun bro??? I mean Geet ki address. Iss waqt??? I mean kkk-kyun chahiye aapko???" (Why bro??? I mean the address of Geet??? At this time??? I mean www-why do you need it?)
"Vicky!!! Joh kahan hai uss ka reply do!!! Jawab Ke badle mujhse sawaal mat karo!!!" (Vicky!!! Reply to only what you've been asked... Don't question me instead of answering) He said in a loud tone. "Please Vicky," he pleaded realising he sounded a bit harsh. "I promise to tell you everything once I'm back. For now, just give me her address, please!!!" And Vicky knew he was not playing around.
"I'll text you the address Bhai. No worries," he said quickly.
"Thanks Vicky," he told him and then immediately after, added, "and please d..." But he was cut off.
"Don't worry bro. Main un donon ko kuch nahi bataaoonga," (Don't worry bro. I'll not tell any of the two anything.) Vicky said in his place.
"Thanks!!!" And then he hung the call.
***************
"Maan Sir???!!! At this time???" A perplexed Jiya asked as she opened the door. Ah!!! She should have guessed.
"Miss Malhotra... I..." Maan looked for the correct words. It seemed awkward to come to a *student* at that time.
"It's ok... You can call me Jiya," she made it easy for him.
"Thanks!!!" He said. "Jiya... Woh... Geet???" He asked about her. "I mean is she ok???" He inquired. Jiya's tired and tensed face somehow conveyed to him that she also knew everything by home. So it seemed right to ask her directly.
"Errr... Actually she's sleeping. I managed to make her sleep with great difficulty," she explained.
"Ohhh!!!" He somehow felt relieved. Good!!! Some sleep might do good to her, he thought. "Ummm...can... Can I just see her???" He asked hesitatingly.
"Errr..." She didn't know what to say.
"Please!!! Unless I see her, I won't be at peace," he nearly pleaded.
"Y--y-yea sure!!!" Jiya replied uneasily. "Over there," she pointed towards her room.
"Thanks!!!" And with that he literally dashed towards her room.
Slowly turning the knob, to avoid making any noise, he entered the room, taking light steps as he approached her bed. He could see the stains of dried tears on her cheeks. She must have cried a lot, he thought sadly. Slowly, he sat on the bed and watched her. Did he do right in telling her??? He now wondered. Yes Maan!!! She had to know, he convinced himself he was right. But at the same time, he felt bad for telling her. He wondered how she was taking everything. From the looks of it, it was very bad. If only, he could lessen her pain, he told himself as he pushed away the tendrils that settled on her cheek. Patting her head, he tried standing up. But something was preventing him. Looking down he saw that one of his shirt's button was, kind of, entangled with a thread coming out of her bed sheet. Slowly, he disentangled it and walked away. And then he again turned around. He saw her curling into a ball as a light breeze entered her room. Pulling the covers over her, he tucked her properly and walked out of her room after closing the windows and putting the heater on.
***************
"Thanks for being with her Jiya," Maan told her.
"She's a friend cum sister to me Sir. I can do that much for her," she said to him.
And with these words, Maan knew she was someone he could count on to look after his Chaashni. "Drop the Sir. You're making me look old. Call me Maan. We're not at the university," he tried easing the atmosphere to which Jiya smiled. Suddenly a thought come to her mind. What if Pari would have been in her place right now. Definitely, she would have already fainted, landing directly into Maan's arms. She chuckled lightly, as she picturised the scene.
"I hope you're not laughing at me," Maan teased.
"Oh no!!! It's just that I remembered something," she clarified.
"Ok!!! I'll make a move now. Thanks for letting me in," he again thanked her and then reaching his pockets he pulled out a card and handed her. "This is my card. Do let me know how she is in the morning. I doubt she will want to talk to me any time soon," he said sadly.
"Don't worry Maan. I will," Jiya reassured him, understanding his concern. He was feeling guilty for telling everything to Geet, to some extent.
"Thanks. Good night," and with that he went away leaving Jiya in deep thoughts.
