CHAPTER 9

On reaching his office, KB called Mohinder on his mobile. When phone was answered, KB said "Can I please speak to Mohinderlal Handa?"
"Speaking!"
"Mr. Handa, this is Kulbhushan Shekhawat speaking!"
"KB yaar, tum kabse itne formal ho gaye ho?" (KB since when have started behaving so formally?)
"Jab se tumne dusari shaadi ki hai. Khair yeh sab baatein chodho. Kya tum akele ho yaa tumhari nayi patni paas mei khadi hai? Agar tumhar paas hai toh dusre kamre mei chale jaao kyunki mai tumse akele mei baat karna chahta hoon!" (Since you got re-married. Anyway forget all this! Are you alone or your new young wife is with you? If she is with you, please go to another room as I want to talk to you in privacy!)
"Mai ek dum akela hoon, kyunki mai Delhi mei hoon. Pammi Chandigarh mei hai."(I'm all alone in Delhi! Pammi is in Chandigarh)
"Theek hai! Tumne jo mujh par bees saal pehle ehsaan kiya tha woh mai aaj lauta rahaa hoon. Geet ki aaj shaam ke che baje Khurana mandir mei shaadi hai. Geet ne mujhse uska "Kanyadaan" karne ko kahaa hai. Geet ko agar pataa chala ki maine tumhei uski shaadi ki baat batai toh woh mujhse kabhi baat nahi karegi! Iss liye agar tum usse aashirwaad dene aao toh please akele aana apni nayi patni ko matt laana. Koshish karna ki Geet aur tumhara aamna saam naa ho! Abb mai phone rakhta hoon!"
(Alright! Today I'm returning your obligation of 20yrs. back when you saved my life. Today evening Geet is getting married at Khurana temple. Geet has asked me to do her "Kanyadaan". If Geet comes to know that I have told you about her wedding, she will never talk to me. Hence, I suggest you come alone and not your new wife! Also try not to come face to face with Geet! Now I'm calling off!)
Once KB disconnected the phone, Mohinder went into deep thought and remembering his beautiful past which he had destroyed himself. 'It was twenty two years back when he had first time seen Rajeshwari or 'Rano' as he lovingly liked to call her. Mohinder(28) had gone for giving an interview for a senior accountant's post at Talwaar Constructions. After he finished his interview, he saw Rano(18) sitting and chatting with Talwaar's daughter, Meenakshi on sofa outside MDs room.
It was love at first sight for Mohinder but seeing Rano's dress and way of talking ignored his feelings as he knew Rano belonged to an extremely rich family and he was an orphan who was brought up in an orphanage. Time passed and his feelings grew stronger no matter how much Mohinder tried suppressing them. Mohinder had now started working for Talwaar Constructions as a senior accountant. Due to his intelligence and perseverance within a year Mohinder was promoted as Head of Accounts Department. Intelligent and hardworking person only needs an opportunity to shine and so was given to Mohinder by Mr. Balveer Talwar. Mr. Talwaar treated Mohinder as a son as he had only two daughters and no son. Soon Meenakshi started dating a rich businessman and rumours of a merger between Talwaar Constructions and Meenakshi's fiance's company were roaring a gamut ! Seeing no future for himself in Talwaar Constructions, Mohinder on KB's advice decided to open his own company and requested Mr. Balveer Talwar's guidance which he gladly gave. Initially stages of growth of his company was tough but by his hardwork and connections he built during working for Talwaars slowly his company started doing well. When Mohinder finally completed his first illustrious project he hosted a party and called Mr. Balveer Talwar with his full family where he saw his love, Rajeshwari again after 3 years, as she was staying with Talwaars for her studies. The moment Rajeshwari saw Mohinder their was extreme attraction Rajeshwari felt for Mohinder and rest as they say was history. They started meeting as friends, then as date and finally fell in love (Mohinder was already in love!) and decided to get married. When Rajeshwari disclosed her wish to marry Mohinder to her family there were fireworks. Her brothers were still willing to consider Mohinder though he did not have a family to boast about but he was self made man and doing very well for himself! But her mother Swarnanjali Singh refused to agree and said that if Rajeshwari doesn't change her mind, she will disown Rajeshwari and thats what happened. The two love birds didn't want to be separated from one another despite of Rajeshwari being disowned and got married in presence of close friends. Rajeshwari's elder brother did her "Kanyadaan" without telling their mother. As Mohinder always felt himself not equal to Rajeshwari, she did not tell him about her royal lineage so that his insecurity doesn't increase! (Please see the charactersketch!)
Soon a year was over, and Rajeshwari (Rano) gave birth to a cute and hazel eyed baby girl and named her Geet. Mohinder knew no bounds of happiness having a loving wife and a daughter a replica of his love, his wife, Rajeshwari. Time starts flying when one is happy and so was with Handas. It was four years since Mohinder and Rajeshwari's marriage, Rano was expecting their second child. Six months passed, Rano took Geet (4 1/2years old) to the Mall to get some school supplies. On the way back from Mall, Rano was walking with Geet and was going to cross the road when she saw a uncontrollable swirling truck coming in Geet's direction, Rano pushed Geet thus saving Geet but unfortunately could not save herself and got hit by truck. Mohinder who had come to pick up his wife and daughter saw the whole scenario and was standing like a statue in state of shock! Geet's continous cry of "Maa, Maa, MAAA..,!"broke his trance and he rushed Rano to hospital but it was too late and Rano passed away saying to Mohinder, "Suniye...Gud...iya...ka...dhy...aa...n...ra...khi...yega!" (Please look after Geet!) After Rano passed away, Mohinder had only two things in life, one was his business and second welfare of Geet.
Mr. Balveer Talwar and Meenakshi tried to convince Mohinder to remarry if not for himself but for Geet's welfare, but he continously refused till one day when Geet fell from staircase and hurt herself when Mohinder was in office. Finally Mohinder agreed but wanted to wait till KB came as he was out of town. On Mr. Balveer Talwar and Meenakshi's insistence, Mohinder called KB and told him about the developments and asked KB his advice. Although KB asked him to wait but Mohinder said he can't leave Geet alone at home in servants care. Hence, Mohinder (38) married Pammi nearly half his age (24).
Pammi who was only interested in Mohinder's wealth started poisoning Mohinder's mind against Geet. The finally trump card Pammi played was holding Geet responsible for Rano's death! After six months of Mohinder and Pammi's marriage, the heart of Rano's lover trampled upon the heart of a father! Pammi's wish of getting everything related to Handa properties was coming true, when Mohinder threw Rano's most precious gift to him, Geet out of the house. Just then Charu came and gathered Geet in her arms in presence of KB who had just arrived after his official trip. Before leaving Charu said,"Jeeja - sa, aaj aap ne naa kewal Geet ko magar Rajeshwari didi ko bhi apne dil aur ghar se nikaal diya hai! Aaj pehli baar mujhe bhagwaan ko dhaniyevaad dene ka mann kar raha hai ki Didi apni Geet ka yeh haal dekhne se pehle chali gayeen!" (Brother-in-law, today you have not only thrown out Geet but also Rajeshwari Didi from your heart and home. Today, I'm thankful to God for the first time to have called Didi to him so that she could not see her darling daughter's condition.)
"Mrs. Pammi Handa, jo aurat ek Maa bankar ek bacchi ko paal nahi sakti usse aurat khelaane ka haq hahi hai! Aaj tum ek pitah ko uski beti se alag kar rahi ho, kahin essa naa ho ki tum kabhi ek maa naa bann paao, jab tum chaho! Mohinder aaj se tum mere dost nahi kewal ek businessman Mr. Mohinderlal Handa. Jaane se pehle mai sirf tumhe ek chaitawani de raha hoon ki jiss aurat ke kehne par tum apni bacchi se naata todh rahe ho, woh tumse nahi tumhari daulat se pyaar karti hai!" (Mrs. Pammi Handa, a woman who cannot become a mother and look after a child, has no right to call herself a woman. Today you are seperating a father from his child, I wish there doesn't come time when you want to become a mother and you can't! From today Mohinder, you are no longer my friend but a businessman Mr. Mohinderlal Handa. I just want to warn you before I leave, the woman on whose advice you are throwing out your only daughter, she doesn't love you but your wealth!)
"Kulbhushan, tameez se baat karo, yeh tumhari bhabhi hai!" Mohinder hollered(Kulbhushan, talk to her with respect she is your sister-in-law!)
"Chilla mai bhi sakta hoon Mr. Mohinderlal Handa. Meri bhabhi che mahine pehle guzar gayeen hain! Yeh kewal ek lalchi aur khudgarz aurat hai, jiska naam hai Mrs. Pammi Handa. Chalu Charu!" Saying that KB left with Charu and Geet. (I can also raise my voice Mr. Mohinderlal Handa. I lost my sister-in-law 6 months back. She is only a greedy and selfish woman, whose name is Mrs. Pammi Handa. Lets leave Charu!)
That was last day KB and Geet had spoken to Mohinder. KB's warning had come true about Pammi. Mohinder had returned from his tour earlier than expected otherwise Pammi was all ready to auction Handa Properties! Mohinder refused to divorce Pammi otherwise he would have to give her half his property which he would never let it happen! KB's other words also came true that was Pammi could never concieve!'
