CHAPTER 28
"What the hell is going on here? Who the hell are you and how dare you shout at Geet?"
Dr. Yash Malhotra put his arm around Geet protectively, while he glared at the man in front of him.
Stunned silence greeted the outburst as three pairs of eyes fixed on the arm around Geet's shoulder.
"Dev? Geet? Who is this man?"
"Oh hi Dr Malhotra. Bhai this is Dr. Yash Malhotra. Dr. Malhotra this is my brother.."
"Thanks Dev, but I think I can speak for myself." Maan interrupted his younger brother.
Maan stuck out his arm and introduced himself.
"Maan Singh Khurana."
Yash looked at the hand thrust before him, palm extended confidently. He stared at it for a moment, but did not move his arm away from Geet's shoulder to shake it. He just nodded his head and glared at the other man.
"And why were you yelling at Geet, Mr. Khurana?"
"None of your damned business, Dr. Malhotra."
"Maan bete." Dadi gasped.
Maan's eyes refused to budge from the arm that was wrapped around Geet's shoulder. God damn it!! He had an insane urge to rip it off. How dare that man...
Whoa Maan back off!!! What the hell are you thinking? It's none of your business who puts their arm around her. Forget it Maan, just forget it.
He nodded to himself turned his back half way, than turned back yet again.
"She is my responsibility. She came with Dev as his physiotherapist and I am going to see her home safely. He stressed on the last word while glaring at Yash."
"No need for that Mr. Khurana. Geet is a family friend and I was infact headed towards the Handas and can see her back safely myself.
"Well excuse me. I think that I can go home by myself quite safely. And I don't think.." Geet began.
"No Geet. I am not allowing you to go by yourself or with this man." Yash interrrupted
"Miss Handa I will see you to your door personally. I cannot leave you stranded here. I insist you come along with me, Dadi and Dev." Maan enunciated simultaneously.
Geet closed her eyes and gritted her teeth, but before she could open her mouth, a feminine hand reached out and neatly extracted her from under Yash's arm.
"Well, well... what kind of a situation do we have here? From my view point, it looks like a pissing competition between two men to see who can pee the farthest. I expected better of you Dr. Yash Malhotra. A soft voice interrupted the intense faceoff and both men flinched visibly as they focused on the person who'd interrupted them.
"Great. Just what we needed, the potty mouthed sub-inspector" Maan groaned under his breath.
"Pari Di." Dev called out excitedly, while Dadi also greeted her warmly.
Pari kept a firm hold on Geet, while she bent down and gave Dev a hug and then turned to Dadi and hugged her.
"Pari bete aap yaha pe kya kar rahe ho?"
"Sarkari mehman ko lekar aayi thi Dadi. Khatirdari kuch zyada ho gayi humari taraf se."
Geet knew immediately what she meant.
She ran her hands all over Pari to check on her.
"Tu thik aahes na Pari?
(Pari are you alright?)
"Ho mazhe aai, me ekdam thik ani than thanit aahe. Pan zyachi khatirdari me keli tyachya baddal kahi vicharu nakos"
(Yes mother hen, I am perfectly fine. But I can't say the same about the man whom I served with a dose of my hospitality)
Geet sighed in relief and almost sagged in Pari's arms.
"Pari mazha pai dukhto aahe, ani mala ajun jast vel ubha rahta yenar nahi. Mala ghari sod."
(Pari my leg is hurting and I don't think I can stand for much longer. Just take me home)
Pari glared at the two men. She did not know what all had taken place here, but she was sure that it all lead back to the two men who had been standing over Geet like tow dogs fighting over a bone.
The moment the thought popped in her head her eyes snapped back to Maan. OMG!!! Did he... was he.. No!!No!! No!! No!! She was completely against it. She was vehemently opposed to it. She had just only recently started believing that he belonged to the human race and her Geet was an angel deserving only the best this world had to offer. Then her eyes moved over Dr. Yash Malhotra. She liked Yash very much, he was a wonderful person, but for whatever reason she just could not see him with Geet. He could not reach that deep place inside her that was so fatally wounded. Considering his profession, he should have been the one who could get to Geet, but he was not. She knew however that he adored Geet and would do anything to make her happy. She turned her gaze back towards Maan and decided to look at him objectively instead of the resentment that always clouded her eyes. There were four people surrounding him, one of whom he had been at loggerheads with moments before. However, his eyes were fixed on one and only one person. Geet. And what she saw in his eyes made her hold her breath.
It was the same look she knew was in her eyes when she looked at Brij, It was the same look that Brij had been looking at her with for ten long years. She knew what that meant.
She than looked at Geet. She was looking at everybody except Maan. Not once did she let her eyes touch his. Geet was a very straightforward and pure hearted person. She never avoided people's eyes, cause she never had anything to hide. However, the very fact that she was not meeting Maan's eyes, scared the hell out of Pari. She did not like that man at all. He was the biggest a**hole she had met on planet earth...well that may have been an exaggeration...however, her opinion of him was not favorable at all. Her Geet deserved a prince on a white horse and Maan Singh Khurana was nowhere close to a charming prince more like Raavan. A king he was, but he was not the hero. He could not be the hero...could he? Then she looked back at Yash. There, right there was a price on a white horse or least in a white coat, but not for this princess.
God damn it!! She was mixing her mythologies and her fairy tales.
She walked up to Maan, glared at him and whispered fiercely.
"You stay away from her, do you hear me. She is not for the likes of you. She's been through hell and back and does not deserve any more shit in her life. I am rooting for the doctor. Let the best man win. And you are nowhere near good enough."
With that she grabbed Geet's hand, bid a hasty goodbye to Dadi and Dev and drove off.
************************************************
It was late in the evening as Maan stepped into the house and climbed up the stairs.
He opened the double doors to his bedroom and the sweet smell of Mogra flowers assailed his senses. She had been inside this room today. He flipped the lights on and walked in a trance towards the photograph of his parents.
He stared at the half opened white buds that were entwined on the gajra lying in front of the pic. He picked it and carried it to his face. He inhaled it deeply and placed it back.
"Pyaar ki nishaani huh? Yeh Dev ke pyaar ki nishani hain, aap donoke liye. Hain na? Aaj itne saalo baad aap se milne aaya tha na woh. Bohot intezaar karvaya na aap ko? Aaj bhi meri wajah se nahi pahuncha woh yahe pe. Jiski wajah se pahucha aap dono mile na aaj usse bhi."
"Kya karoon mamma? Tum kyun nahi ho yaha pe? Agar tum hoti toh mere kaal ke bartav ke liye mujhe bohot daanti. Aur usse mujjhe maaf karne ko mana bhi leti."
"And papa you would have punched me for sure, for not being the gentleman that you have always been and shown, by example. She unmans me papa. I never get anything right as far as she is concerned. I can't keep away from her and I keep hurting her over and over again. I don't recognize me when she is around.
The French doors facing the balcony were open and pale blue curtains swayed gently with the cool February evening breeze. He sighed and went and sat on the chaise that was near the balcony and closed his eyes. Dulcet tones of Kishore Kumar wafted to his ears through the French doors. Dadi must have opened the doors to her balcony. The music was coming from the direction of her rooms.

Aap aap ki aankhon me kuch mehke hue se raaz hai
Apase bhi khoobsoorat aapke andaz hai
He slowly drew his cellphone out of his pocket and scrolled to her image that he not been able to bring himself to delete. Her beautiful eyes spoke volumes in that photograph, yet he was privy to none of her secrets.
Lab hile to mogre ke phool khilte hai kahi
Aap ki aankhon me kya saahil bhi milate hai kahi
Aap ki khaamoshiyan bhi aap ki aawaz hai
His forefinger traced the outline of those laughing lips.
"Maan" In his mind, he heard her calling his name again. Her voice filled with gratitude and admiration washed over his ears again and heart melted. He craved to taste it on her mouth. He wanted to kiss her breathless as she shaped the syllables on her lips.
"Geet.. Geet.. Geet" He reciprocated now, softly and with longing, as he had been wanting to since he'd heard his name on her lips yesterday.
"Your silence today, just about killed me Geet.. Mujhe laga tum wapis yaha pe kabhi nahi aaogi. Thank you Geet, thank you for coming back and I am so very sorry. I did not mean a single word of the bullshit I spewed yesterday. My name on your lips is the most beautiful sound I've ever heard and I crave to hear it again."
He drew in a deep breath and the scent of the Mogra filled his lungs. He would never be able to look at those flowers again, without thinking about her.
"Par tumhe aaj tak kisi se kyun nahi mile mogre ke pool Geet? Did Miri's father not give them to you? Did he not love you?"
His mind flashed back to the events of the morning. A wave of irritation washed over him yet again as he remembered Dr. Yash Malhotra. He immediately jumped out of the chair and started pacing. And Pari...what was the deal with her? The knot that was in his stomach since yesterday tightened into a hard lump as he recalled her words. He refused to think of what she had seen on his face that had made her hellbent on warning him to stay away. Not that he was interested in furthering his relationship with Geet, but how dare she pick that idiot doctor over him. But damn it all. He had gone out of his way to help that brat of a sub inspector in her quest for bringing Brij Handa to heel; the least she could do was pretend to like him.
His gaze fell on the coffeemaker in the corner of the room and he headed towards it. Might as well tank up and get some work done. He was not going to get any sleep in this room tonight, not with the perfume of those flowers seducing his senses and reminding him of her every moment.
As he picked up the coffee mug after a few minutes and took it to his lips, he refused to dwell on the fact that this was perhaps the tenth or the fifteenth coffee of his day. He had stopped counting after the seventh one. No amount of liquid had been able to wash away the knot gripping his stomach and it had been over 36 hours since he had eaten his last meal.
She had still not forgiven him.
*****************************************************
Geet listened to the music drifting from the living room. Dinner was done and Miri was fast asleep in her bed. Lata Mangeshkar's melodious voice crooned.
Aap ki aankhon me kuch mehke hue se raaz hai
Aap se bhi khoobsoorat aapake andaz hai
Aap ki baton me phir koi shararat to nahi
Bewajah taarif karana aap ki aadat to nahi
Aap ki badamashiyon ke ye naye andaz hai
She had come home with Pari in the afternoon and she felt well rested now. For once Pari had been unusually quiet, lost in her own thoughts and Geet had assumed it was related to her work and she herself had not been in a mood to talk after the whole fiasco in the parking lot.
She had been mad at him in the morning and not paid any attention to what he'd been saying. Now she went back over the whole conversation again and smiled. She never could hold a grudge against anybody and her well laid plans to never ever forgive him had been undermined by his determination to apologize. He had actually forgotten what he had said to her. She softened at that admission. Aai had been just like that. Whenever she and baba had fought over something, her aai invariably overshot her mouth and things spilled out of her mouth of their own violation. She would rant at baba and then come back sheepishly to Geet or Brij and ask them what she had actually said. She'd said that a haze formed around her mind whenever she was extremely stressed and she could never recall clearly what all she had said in that moment. It was in that moment of his admission that she had forgiven Maan. That and his apology had gone long ways to soothe her. She remembered what he'd said about Dev's wheel chair and knew, that too had been a trick to draw her out. She laughed out loud when she thought back to the Gandhism she had given him and her smile softened as she thought back to the way he sounded when he laughed.
She was lost in her thoughts when her cell phone vibrated. She was startled to see Dadi's number flash across it and picked it up immediately.
"Hello Dadi? Kya hua? Sab thik hain na?"
"Pata nahi bete. Usse pucha toh woh keh nahi raha hain. Kehta hain kuch nahi hua hai, sab thik hai."
"Aaj subah toh bilkul thik tha woh Dadi. He was so happy getting in that new wheel chair. He is so looking forward to playing basketball in that."
"Main Dev ki baat nahi kar rahi hoon bete, Maan ki baat kar rahi hoon."
Geet's heart squeezed hard as she heard he worry in Dadi's voice.
"Kya... Kya hua unhe Dadi?"
"Wahi toh main bhi janna chahti hoon. Abhi main Maan ke kamre mein gayi thi and he was having coffee at this time of the hour. Woh kabhi bhi raat ko coffee nahi lete, but that is not the problem Geet."
"Kaal raat ko shayad Maan ne khana nahi khaya, aaj subah breakfast bhi nahi kia. Shyam ko maine unke office mein call kia tha and spoke to his secretary. She said that today whole day she has been making pots and pots of coffee as Maan has been continuously demanding it. I asked her if he'd been out for lunch, or had her bring in anything. She said no she had not. Office seg har aake bhi khana nahi khaya. Main jaanti hoon ki aap dono ke beech mein kaal phir se kuch anban hui hai. Aur Maan ne jo bhi kiya woh use khaye ja raha hain. He was trying to apologize to you in the afternoon for pushing you. Aur aap bhi unse bohot khafa thi. Aakhir aisi kya baat ho gayi bete? Please mujhe bataiye, main usse aise bechain nahi dekh sakti."
Geet's heart was pounding by the time Dadi was done talking.
"Dadi aap ek aadha ghanta rukiye, main waha pe aa rahi hoon. Bye Dadi, see you then." She kept the phone down before Dadi could say anymore and hurried towards the kitchen. On the way she stopped at Brij's door.
"Bhaiyya mujhe Khurana's ke yaha jana hai. Please mujhe le chaliye."
"Kya hua Geet? Sab thik hain na?"
"Haan bhaiyya sab thik hai. Bas mujhe Dev ko kuch dena hai."
"Par abhi itni raat gaye?"
"Haan abhi. Main ready hoti hoon aur aap ko bahar milti hoon."
