Chapter 13

Maan was walking cautiously toward the main entrance of the building, when he thought he heard some movements coming from the bushes. He paused for a minute and looked around him but it was too dark to locate anyone. He was worried for Veer's safety. His mind started processing all the negative thoughts. "What if this was all a trap?" "What if they want something else?" "What if they have harmed Veer?" "What if I'm not able to protect Veer?" "What if..."

His hands clenched on the bags harder and shook the negative thoughts out of his mind and entered the dark shabby building. He looked around the room for the kidnapper, but the room was empty. He called out for Veer once but there was no response.

He took a deep breath and called out again, "Koi hai? Veer?"

Maan heard footsteps approaching from across the room. Then a dim light was turned and there stood a tall man in black attire with his face covered. And behind him stood another man.

"I see you have brought the money, Khurana. I'm impressed."

"Where is my son?" It took every inch in him to not pounce on the man and finish him right there.

The kidnapper signaled the other man to bring Veer out. Maan saw him disappear in one of the rooms and then came back, shoving a blind folded Veer out. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw him. But his blood boiled looking at the man treat his son like that. He was helpless because he didn't want to put Veer's life in any more danger, otherwise he would have showed that man for shoving his son. Nobody treats Maan Singh Khurana's son like that.

"Veer"

"Dad. Dad, please save me!" Veer muttered as soon as the kidnapper opened his mouth. Maan's heart broke looking at his son's condition. His eye were blood red from crying, just like his mother's. His face had turned pale and eyes full of fear. Maan was about to take a step toward him and engulf him in his arms, but the kidnapper stopped him.

"What's the rush? You waited this long, you can wait a few more moment. Now, send those bags over here first." Said the kidnapper, signaling his man again.

Maan pushed the bags a little bit and the man came and picked them up.

The kidnapper was about to open Veer's hands and release him, but stopped as soon as he saw his man come running from the outside, "Boss, Police. Police is coming. Run."

"You son of a bitch. I told you not to inform the police." He pointed the gun at Maan. On the other hand, his 2 men quickly picked up the bags and ran away from the back door.

Maan was as shocked as the kidnappers with the revelation, "I didn't inform them. Believe me."

"Now, someone has to pay for it." He changed the direction of the gun, and pointed it toward Veer.

"Dev no, please no. Don't do this. Veer hasn't done anything to you." Maan got petrified and tried to approach him.

The kidnapper was Dev, Maan's Canadian cousin. He had all the bad habits. He was an alcoholic, a gambler, an unfaithful husband and now he was kidnapper. Maan recognized him as soon as he saw him but couldn't believe his brother could stoop so low.

"Don't move. This is all your fault, Bro." Dev spoke with venom in his voice.

"Please, leave Veer. I will fix all this."

"You destroy it first and then you claim to fix it? It's too late."

Maan knew what Dev was referring to. Five years ago, when Dev came to India with his wife, Naina and son, he insisted on joining Maan in the office. Slowly, Maan came to know of all his habit and warned him on several occasions. But all hell broke loose when he found him drunk with another woman. He loved Naina like a sister and exposed him in front her. After that Naina took her son and left Dev forever.

The noise of the siren got louder, indicating that the police could be here any moment. Dev couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger on an innocent kid, so he pointed the gun at Maan and picked Veer up and tried to run away as well.

"Dad. DAD" Screamed Veer for help.

"Dev, you can't take him with you." Said Maan while looking around the room for a way to stop Dev.

Veer started shaking his legs and writhed hard to come out of Dev's grip. But when Dev still didn't leave him, he bit him hard on his shoulder.

Dev screamed in pain and dropped Veer on the hard floor. "You son of.." Maan pounced on him before he could even finish the sentence. First, he knocked the gun out of his hand. Then Maan threw a punch at him and he doubled over in pain.

Veer dragged himself to the corner of the room and looked at the scene in front of him.

Maan and Dev were throwing punches at each other when the police entered the room. The cops quickly went and parted them away from each other.

Jay hastily walked over to Veer and untied his hands. He took petrified Veer in his arms to calm him down a little bit.

"I'm going to come back. You ruined my life, you did this to me. I won't leave you." Dev screamed when the cops were taking him.

"You did this to yourself, Dev. You ruined your life with your own bad decisions. And now you will pay for them." Maan said before the cops handcuffed Dev and took him away.

Maan saw a petrified Veer running to him. He opened his arm for him and took him into a long tight hug. "It's okay champ." He whispered in his ears. "You are fine now."

Maan got worried when he didn't get any reply from him. "Champ, say something. Are you hurt?" He tried to look for any injures but Veer's grip around his neck got tighter.

"I want Mamma. I want to go home."
