[5] Wafers and Waters

"Are you sure it's going to work?" Geet inquired peeking in the car.

*

It had been a week since the psychopath had last struck and Geet hadn't fallen prey to any new menaces since the mishap with Maan. That eerie silence bothered her to the brim, since, she was a torrid believer of the adage quoting that a silence always prevailed before the breakout of a storm.

Her mind kept playing weird games with her that didn't help in hauling her out of the dreadful state that had gripped her since then. Every day, her eyes would be opened at midnight and she would find herself retreating to the telephone, in the anticipation of another midnight call, which unfortunately never came.

The letters. The famously poetic letters were on a strike since somewhat a century and the ghastly feeling encumbering her was not much approved. Something was being prepared, something was lying in ambush, and, Geet was sure of it. But, unless the psychopath decided to turn his heels back to his supposed work, she would never know what that grisly feeling engulfing her was.

And, that day, that Sunday, it came. It came in its most unruffled demeanor, in a gilded envelope, with a pearl hanging from the bottom loop. Geet gasped at the sight of it. "Anvesha's necklace?" she uttered disbelievingly. What was he up to now? Warily plucking the letter out of its coffin, she sighed.

The creator, the only destroyer
Lapsed in a fourteen year terror
Opportune time it is
Shack of blood retrieved
Solace is vindictive
Revenge is instinctive
Donor dwells in wafers
Happiness lies in waters

"Maan!" she shrieked, the letter still in her palms and her eyes misty, before she gave way to numbness and terror and passed out.

*

Her eyes strived to pave way for the light and opened, registering her surroundings. She was in her room, her hand wrapped in Maan's and had a white strip on her vein. "I've called Mathew," Maan said, dismantling the silence. That was when she realized that he hadn't been sleeping along with her.

He motioned towards the letter on the adjacent night-table and hugged her rubbing her back, comforting her.

She shivered as the content of the letter drew in. That was it. Everything was getting unambiguous and she could make out who that person was. "He's back." She stuttered.

*

"So, you mean to say that he, that man who committed all these crimes, he is your father. Right?"

"Yes," Geet replied back, the cool breeze of that winter morning laundering her face.

"And, what makes you say so?" Mathew stood there, in company of the couple, sipping a piping hot mug of tea, while drawing in Geet's words.

She rested her head on Maan's chest, who kept fondling with her hair, assuring her that he was with her always and that fears and admonitions could be overcome, but the truth could never be delayed.

Geet inhaled a large puff of air and said, "My mother was brutally abused by him, my father, since I was born, because of the fact that I was a girl. Gender issues at that time- everyone wanted their wives to conceive a boy. India, at that time, you know? I assume you must be having a gist of life then... He used to seek happiness in alcohol and impulsively used to beat the pulp out of my mom. She was a strong woman. She never gave in to any of his abuses- she used to stand back and confront him, always. And, that hurt his ego, to a huge extent. My mother always thought that striking back and tackling with his drunken facet, made him see reason, but she was wrong. It all kept accumulating in him, and the male ego, as she named it was never tamed. My mother, unknowingly, kept filling the tank and when it reached its brim, she was broken; she was badly broken in the most sordid way possible." She paused, reached for a glass of water and gulped the liquid down. "My father raped her, everyday, every night, shattered every single piece of well-being in her until she gave in, finally one day and fled away from that hell, taking a piece of me alongside her... She departed this life into another, where I'm sure that she is happier and, more content."

Strangely, Geet wiped away her tears and stared at the grass, "That was fourteen years back, when he was enslaved by law and locked up, due to my unrelenting conviction and testimonial in the court that he had gladly ripped my mother apart and sent her to the other world with the same glee. Since then, I've been with my grandmother until acting came knocking. I've never seen him since that day until today."

"The creator, the only destroyer...lapsed in a fourteen year terror..." Mathew read out loud, musing over the words. "Hence, the fourteen year bit. I completely understand you, Geet. You had to go through a lot and, I'm sorry... but are you sure it's him? How can you say so with such an assurance? This letter has no connection with any of the other letters! It's not even providing a clairvoyance of the next murder... And, why will your father kill Anvesha? Jew? I completely understand why he's against you, but why taking these innocent lives in this process? Most surprisingly, what grudge does he have against your unborn child? What's the need of camouflaging himself in the Rules Of Resistance' charade, in the calls, in evoking the characters of your show behind each murder? What's he after?"

Geet sighed and held on to Maan who angrily looked up at Mathew, "Please, curb that down. She is pregnant. Stop thumping unnecessary stress on her." Looking over to Geet, he swayed her in his arms and brought her to a chair, settling her in it.

"He used to call me Wafer' when I was a kid," she admitted, tears brimming in her eyes, which were instantly wiped by Maan. "We'll keep this to another day. Geet, rest," he added. "No, Maan, I want to clear it all today. Now."

"Donor dwells in wafers... happiness lies in waters..." Geet sighed as she heard Mathew reciting what was written on the paper. "But why is the donor supposed to dwell in you? And who is Waters'? A nick-name for Adi, maybe?"

"No, Mathew. I am clueless about the waters' thing. I only know, I am very sure, that it's him- my father. He's behind this. He wants to extract revenge from me for making him pay for what he had done to my mother. Just nab him and... kill him!" she bellowed, seething with wrath. "Geet, calm down, please. I swear if you don't..." Maan patted her arm and she nodded, hugging him.

"What about Adi? He is elder than you, right? How is it that he isn't in the picture?" Mathew went on with the investigations, ignoring Maan's pleas.

"No. Adi is my younger brother. I'm three years elder than him, but he's always been as supportive and caring as an elder brother. Actually, he's my half-brother, but closer than a real one. When dad was imprisoned, granny came to know that he had another child with an outsider and the mother didn't want to keep the child anymore. I really don't know who the mother was, before you ask! Granny took him with us, since to her belief, the child was not at fault to anything happening to him and, we stayed together since then."

"I'll have something done for your protection, but, the proofs are not heavy enough to arrest him. The other letters and the phone calls seem to have no connection with him and this letter. I won't be able to do much about him, but, if you hand me over a picture of his, I might do the necessary to track him down and spy over each of his doings. This is the most I can do on the basis of suspicion. Remember Geet, he is only a suspect. The murderer might be somebody else. The reel of events since the past few days do not counterpart with this letter. I'm really sorry about this..."

Geet looked away, pensively and replied, "I have none of his belongings with me. A picture of him is something farfetched. I can have ADI to mail his details to you. He has a few pictures of him."

"That's fine. I'll have a word with him," he smiled assuring her, and left Maan and Geet in each other's embrace, with the wind lingering about.

*

"Can you go over your words please?" Geet asked, a disbelieving look planted on her face which was waterlogged with tears. She hushed away a snivel and sobbed in Maan's chest.

"Mahinder Handa is no more." Mathew replied, directing Geet to the suicide lieu.

It was tagged as a suicidal case, and it did seem so, but, for the figures who were aware of the letter, it was something else.

"Reports from the hospital state Asphyxia' as a death reason. The conclusion lugged out is that he has committed suicide by diving into deep waters, the fact that he was not a good swimmer honing it all. It's clearly inscribed here, Danger: No Swimming.' But people are adamant."

"It's not a suicide. It's a murder, a well-planned murder. Do you remember about the letter this morning?" she hollered, dragging the piece of paper and carelessly, shoving it in front of the two men, outlining the words, "Donor dwells in wafers... happiness lies in waters." Victoriously, she added, jigging, "The murderer is a psychopath, in bold and block letters, mark my words. He is fishing out sadistic pleasure by killing people. Happiness lies in waters. He had already left a clue... We were so dumb."

Geet looked up at the confused faces ogling at her, "Oh my Lord, Maan and Mathew! Happiness lies in waters. In waters. Waters. Clicks something? He had planned to find his euphoria by killing my dad, by drowning him. Happiness lies in waters. He found solace by watching someone struggling, striving for life, wanting to live, being mercilessly dragged into the other world. That's the same for Jew and Anvesha. Stabbing a knife in them, would kill them, on the spot. But hanging them would make them suffer, wriggle and seethe till the end. This is exactly what he wants..."

*

So? Now, who do you think it was? There were a few hints in the chapter- I hope they have seeped in!

Thank you for reading! If you like the story, please share it with your friends!

*Asphyxia is a noun, commonly describing a condition arising when the body is deprived of oxygen, causing unconsciousness or death; suffocation.

Author's Note:

This is principally tacked up for those who will revert back here without seeing any update after a huge span of time.

Call it the irony of life? When I've got holidays, instead of enjoying I'm supposed to buck up and cram. It's utterly freaky when your examinations begin on the 7th of October and you aren't prepared for any of the subjects except for Language. It's even dreadful for me to make up to the calender and count to number of days leading to October.

O Level Examinations. These are supposed to be the turning point of any teenager's life whose results bring back a lot... I just want to be in the batch of students shrieking with joy on the day of the results. And, just to catch up and gen up, I'm going to be away from India Forums till the end of my examinations which might date to the start of November.
This implies no chapters being drafted and no updates until exams are over. I want to seek a mammoth amount of apology from you all who have garnered over here for this story, for keeping you hanging till so much time.

Before I leave, I would like to convey my sincere apologies to all those who have opened this thread once and have come through this note and would request you to please leave back a word if you would still be willing to resume reading ROR, after let's say a span of two months?
I would like to have an insight of how this would be like in November. (I will totally understand if you would not want to continue reading after such a long time, so no worries😉)
Thank you for your love, comments and, support bestowed on this story!

I would have never taken such a huge break, but studies remain my priority. I hope you understand, and, I'm sorry, once again!

I will indubitably return- I have promised someone of an umbrella-fied story after ROR and, I will definitely live up to my promise!

Take care everyone! God Bless you all!
